Midway Christian Church sermon for August 10, 2025Rev. Dr. Heather W. McColl, Midway Christian Church, Midway KY Worship Series: “Five Smooth Stones: Building a Relationship with God”Saul clothed David with his armor; he put a bronze helmet on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail. David strapped Saul’s sword over the armor, and he tried in vain to walk, for he was not used to them. Then David said to Saul, “I cannot walk with these, for I am not used to them.” So David removed them. Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the wadi and put them in his shepherd’s bag, in the pouch; his sling was in his hand, and he drew near to the Philistine. 1 Samuel 17: 38-40This passage is just a small bit of David’s story. It tells of David’s interactions and conversations immediately before he is to meet Goliath. Although David tried to put on armor to fight Goliath, it didn’t work. The need for unbendable hard metal to protect him was not who David was just as the hard and harsh ways of the world are not God’s ways. Instead, David chose five smooth stones to defeat the giant. He “was able to bring down Goliath not with sword and shield but with faith grounded in lived experience of God’s care and love”. And in doing so, he changed the world.Part 2 - Trust: One Day at a TimeJeremiah 17: 5-8Trust in God is an active choice, something we choose to do and live out every single day. “Trust in God does not ensure outward success. Nor does it promise that we will not face difficulties in our lives. What trust in God will do is enable us to rise above despair and cynicism. It will keep us connected to God even in the most difficult circumstances. It will produce fruit even in what looks like unproductive soil.”www.midwaychristian.orgTheology TuesdayPodcasts Sermon LibraryPortions of this recording are covered by one of the following licenses:CCLI: 948745Streaming: 20256756One License: 737814-ACVLI: 505440248
Midway Christian Church sermon for October 12, 2025Rev. Dr. Heather W. McColl, Midway Christian, Church, Midway KYWorship Series: The Welcome TableThe Table is a place of acceptance and belonging, a place where we center ourselves in the presence of God, a place where authentic, meaningful conversations and dialog can happen as we offer up our shared experiences. As Disciples of Christ, our theology and practice surrounding the Table is rooted in the examples Jesus shared during his ministry. He welcomed friends and strangers alike. He engaged in conversation with those who disagreed with him. He broke bread with the one who would betray him, the one who would deny him and the ones who would abandon him. Every time Jesus gathered around the Table, he shared a vision of God’s Beloved Community with one and all.In this worship series, we reclaim this connection to God’s expansive Welcome Table. We will explore the invitation to come to the Table, the challenge to stay at the Table and the call to build a bigger table for all of God’s people. And in doing so, we will begin to cultivate a way of community and connection that embraces God’s love, peace, grace and joy for all of God’s people.Part 4: “Stay at the Table: Turning the Other Cheek”Scripture: Matthew 5: 38-48“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who harass you…” This verse is from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, which should be a clue for us as readers to sit up and pay attention to what is happening, to what is being said, to what is being shared because it is essential to our becoming Jesus’ disciples. In his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus lays it out for his disciples then, and now, what it means to be a disciple – and that more often than not, it means to love our enemies, to turn the other cheek, to stay at the table when others walk away.https://www.midwaychristian.orgTheology Tuesday - https://www.midwaychristian.org/theology-tuesday/Podcast - https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/midway-christian Sermon Library - https://www.midwaychristian.org/sermons/

God’s grace heals our wounds. God’s grace opens our eyes to see the light of Christ which resides in everyone. God’s grace transforms us and yes humbles us. God’s grace uplifts us and strengthens us. All are together as one. All are seen, heard, appreciated and embraced. Hospitality turns our definition of welcome upside down and draws the circle wider still. The Table of Hospitality invites us to rethink our concept of welcome and expand it. It expands the boundaries with which we are comfortable. Just when we think we have expanded the invitation wide enough, the Table of Hospitality challenges us to draw it wider still. https://www.midwaychristian.orgTheology Tuesday - https://www.midwaychristian.org/theology-tuesday/Podcast - https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/midway-christian Sermon Library - https://www.midwaychristian.org/sermons/

Let everything inside me bless God’s holy name!” God has done amazing things for us. God has provided us with life. God has claimed us and named us as Beloved Children of God. God has kept God’s promises. God has made a way out of no way. We come to church, we lift our voices in praise not because of what we have done but because of what God has done, because of who God is, because we know God is at work in this world. At the heart of our faith is this: we praise God from whom all blessings flow!www.midwaychristian.orgTheology TuesdayPodcasts Sermon LibraryPortions of this recording are covered by one of the following licenses:CCLI: 948745Streaming: 20256756One License: 737814-ACVLI: 505440248

He is defining obedience through our experience of and with God’s love. He knows that “when we love one another as God’s commandments and Jesus’ teachings call us to do, we realize that it is no longer about us as individuals. Rather it is about us as community.” John is reminding us that obedience to God’s commandments, obedience to Jesus’ teaching always comes down to one question: In any situation, what is the loving thing to do?”www.midwaychristian.orgTheology TuesdayPodcasts Sermon LibraryPortions of this recording are covered by one of the following licenses:CCLI: 948745Streaming: 20256756One License: 737814-ACVLI: 505440248

You move forward anyway, even though you’re scared. In fact, it’s an act of spiritual bravery to explore your fear instead of attempting to suppress it. “You are Lacking One Thing” Mark 10: 17-31, July 6, 2025 Inheriting eternal life has nothing to do with wealth and money. Rather instead it has everything to do with being in relationship with God and with one another. It has everything to do with realizing that we cannot and we do not earn God’s love. Rather it is about responding to that life giving, world changing love by sharing it with others because we cannot do anything else. This love is not ours to hoard or to keep. It is to be shared, to be given, used to empower, to make justice, to care for the least of these. This love, God’s love is the vehicle which brings transformation, helping us to become the people God created us to be, calls us to be for a time such as this."You are Lacking One Thing"Mark 10: 17-31Rev. “Treasures in Heaven” Matthew 6: 169-34, June 29, 2025 Stop worrying about things you cannot control. Focus on what you can do. Focus on how you feel and process those emotions. Focus on your actions and words. Focus on how you respond, It is that last part which draws me back to this text again and again…as Jesus disciples, we are called to focus on how we respond. It is not that Jesus is ignoring the injustices of hunger and poverty in the world. Rather, he is asking us as his disciples to think about how we will respond to those injustices. Will we buy into the larger narrative of power and greed and hoard resources? Or will we live into the values of the Beloved Community and know that there is more than enough to not only support life but to thrive?"Treasures in Heaven"Matthew 6: 19-34Rev. Dr. Heather W. “We Have This Hope” Romans 5: 1-5, June 15, 2025 We can rejoice in the midst of the suffering, in the midst of our suffering. Not because we are in denial. Rather it is because we know suffering cannot quash our hope. It cannot quash our joy. It cannot dim the promises of God that are given to us by our God who loves us more than we will ever know."Whe Have This Hope"Romans 5: 1-5Rev. Dr. Heather W. Today is Pentecost Sunday. In keeping with tradition, Historic Second Christian and Midway Christian churches gather together for worship. This year, we worshipped at Historic Second and the sermon was provided by Pastor Heather McColl of Midway Christian.“Fruits of the Spirit” Acts 2:1-4; Galatians 5: 16-26, June 8, 2025Often, we limit our celebration of Pentecost to one day. Yet Pentecost is a reminder, a celebration that the Holy Spirit is with us now and always. Each and every day our lives, our worlds, our actions are shaped by the possibilities of the Holy Spirit, possibilities which show us that love and light will always have the last word. Part 6: Fifty Days of Easter, June 1, 2025 At its core, our text for this morning is about identity and how that identity shapes our practices of faith. We need to remember that the early Church was not Christian; Jesus didn’t come to start a new religion. So many people within the early Church were Jewish. They were simply known as Christ followers but it wasn’t a new religion. They still practiced the Jewish religious traditions and saw themselves as Jewish. They simply accepted Jesus as the Messiah which was promised."Council at Jerusalem"Acts 15: 1-18Rev. Dr. Heather W. Part 5: Fifty Days of Easter, May 25, 2025 This strange story of the Ethiopian eunuch could haveeasily laid out a rigid dogma of belief which the early church was supposed to follow. This story could have easily set the course for practice which would have shaped the Church for generations to come. Instead, it offers a glimpse into an encounter where the Holy Spirit is present. It offers us an invitation to share the faith through conversation and dialogue. In other words, instead of rigid dogma, this strange story reminds us that what is needed to share the Gospel message is compassion, openness, and a willingness to follow the Spirit where it leads."Do You Really Understand What You Are Reading"Acts 8: 26-39Rev. Part 4: Fifty Days of Easter, May 18, 2025 Stephen’s story reminds us of the challenges of discipleship, things we often tend to forget or ignore. It shows us that we are called to testify in all things and through all things to God’s love. It also reminds us to not forget that Christ was crucified for speaking truth to love and grace, and as his disciples, we cannot expect different treatment."Stephen's Witness"Acts 6:1 - 7:2a, 44-60Rev. Part 3: Fifty Days of Easter, May 11, 2025 Through the story of the walk to Emmaus, the author of Luke is reminding us, as ones who follow a Risen Savior, the very core of our faith is the knowledge, the understanding, the promise given to us by a God who loves us more than we could ever imagine. At the very core of our faith is the promise that death does not have the last word. Where the world sees an ending, as people of faith, we know God is there, bringing about healing and wholeness."Walk to Emmaus"Luke 24: 13-35Rev. Dr. Heather W. Part 2: Fifty Days of Easter, May 4, 2025 In our text for this morning, having denied Christ three times, Peter is given a chance for reconciliation. But I would argue that the author of our text extends that chance to us as well. We are given an opportunity to embrace our call to listen and follow Jesus in this new reality and to show we love Jesus by feeding Jesus’ sheep, by tending his lambs. Like Peter, like the disciples, we are now the Shepherd’s heart and hands in this world."Feed My Sheep"John 21: 1-19Rev. Dr. Heather W.
