Sheath is a unique veteran-owned business known for innovating comfort in men’s underwear. Originally a men’s underwear company, it expanded to include a women’s line in 2017. The brand reflects discipline, durability, and self-mastery – qualities rooted in Robert's military background and aligned with the broader mission of encouraging military entrepreneurs to build purpose-driven businesses. Transitioning from Military to Business Robert’s entrepreneurial journey began during his military service in Iraq, where he identified a need for performance-based comfort in extreme conditions. Encouraged by those around him, he turned an idea into a prototype and eventually into a thriving business. His experience illustrates the challenges and opportunities that come with transitioning from active duty to entrepreneurship, a path many veterans and military spouses are exploring today. The Military Influence on Business Leadership The discussion highlights how military experience directly shapes effective business leadership, communication, and problem-solving. Robert shared how his Army training built resilience, perseverance, and confidence – essential skills for anyone navigating military small business ownership or exploring funding for veteran owned business. His story underscores why veterans often make exceptional leaders in both startups and established companies. Challenges and Growth at Sheath Robert’s initial product run didn’t succeed due to design issues, but the setback only strengthened his determination. After refining the design and relaunching, Sheath gained momentum. His story is a reminder that growth requires patience, adaptability, and a willingness to learn – traits often developed during military service and essential for entrepreneurial leadership. Sheath’s team is largely built around trusted family and friends. While unconventional, this lean and resourceful approach helped the company grow organically. It offers an interesting perspective for listeners considering team-building strategies for their own veteran-owned small business. Testing Different Marketing Strategies Sheath’s marketing strategy evolved from podcast outreach to influencer endorsements and YouTube sponsorships. Robert emphasizes the importance of organic growth, audience feedback, and meeting customers where they are. His experience offers valuable insight for military entrepreneurs navigating business marketing, digital platforms, and customer engagement. Looking ahead, Sheath plans to expand into pajamas and everyday apparel, aiming for significant growth over the next decade. Robert’s approach demonstrates long-term strategic planning – a key theme in both leadership development and military-inspired business strategy. Advice for Aspiring Veteran Entrepreneurs Robert encourages aspiring entrepreneurs, especially veterans, to leverage resources such as the GI Bill, the Small Business Administration, and modern funding avenues like crowdfunding. These tools can help military members and spouses access veteran business funding, reduce financial risk, and build sustainable companies. Robert Patton’s story is a powerful example of resilience, innovation, and applying military skills to the business world. Welcome to Season 2 Episode 5 of the "Militarily Speaking" podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery In this episode of Militarily Speaking, we sit down with Heather Walrath of Navy Mutual Aid Association to discuss military financial readiness, budgeting for PCS moves, and long-term planning for veterans and service members. Discover expert tips on saving money, improving credit, managing military loans, and preparing for life after service. Whether you’re new to the military or nearing retirement, this episode is your guide to smarter military banking and financial success. “Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are. The Financial Moves Every Military Family Needs to Make - Advice from Navy Mutual’s Heather Walrath The Navy Mutual Aid Association is the oldest federally recognized veteran service organization in the U.S., founded to support naval officers and their families after the Battle of Little Bighorn. Today, it provides life insurance, financial counseling, and educational resources across all branches of the military. Heather’s role gives her a front-row seat to the financial challenges military families face, from navigating military benefits to planning for retirement. Her passion lies in empowering families through financial literacy – ensuring every military service member understands the full scope of benefits and options available to them. Building Military Financial Readiness from Day One Heather emphasizes that financial education for service members should begin as early as possible. Her mantra – “Save from day one” – encourages young service members to take advantage of military savings accounts, the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), and high-yield savings options offered by military-friendly banks like Armed Forces Bank. She also highlights how financial planning for military families can prevent issues that affect security clearances and leadership opportunities. By setting shared goals and having regular “money dates,” military couples can improve communication and maintain financial wellness during deployments or PCS moves. Overcoming Common Financial Challenges in Military Life From frequent relocations to managing unexpected expenses, Heather outlines how military families can improve financial readiness through emergency savings, smart budgeting, and ongoing financial education. Her stories underscore the real-world impact of military financial resources – including one about helping a widow recover unclaimed benefits, illustrating how financial literacy directly supports the military community’s well-being. Collaboration Between Banks and the Military Community Heather stresses the importance of partnerships between financial institutions and veteran organizations. By hosting workshops, sharing resources about VA home loans, military checking and savings accounts, and access loans, banks can play a key role in improving financial literacy among service members and veterans. These collaborations ensure veterans and military families have access to trusted tools that promote financial independence and support their transition to civilian life. Defining Financial Success for Military Families Heather defines financial success not as wealth, but as peace of mind – the confidence that comes from being prepared for emergencies, living within your means, and making informed financial choices. Her approach aligns with Armed Forces Bank: to provide financial tools and guidance that help service members, veterans, and their families thrive, no matter where military life takes them. Building Financial Independence in the Military Community Heather Walrath’s insights highlight the critical role of financial readiness in the military community. From understanding military benefits to creating long-term stability through financial education, her message is clear: financial empowerment starts with knowledge and proactive planning. Welcome to Season 2 Episode 4 of the "Militarily Speaking" podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery In this episode of Militarily Speaking, we talk with Bruce McClary, Senior Vice President of Media Relations and Membership for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC). Financial readiness is an essential part of life for military families, who often face unique financial challenges due to deployments, relocations, and transitions between duty stations. Together with hosts Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery, they explore the latest trends, tools, and financial resources for service members designed to promote military financial wellness and education. “Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are. 27% of Military Families Are Doing This With Their Money and Why It’s Risky – with Bruce McClary of NFCC Returning as the first-ever repeat guest on Militarily Speaking, Bruce McClary shares his extensive experience helping service members and veterans achieve financial stability. Through his work with the NFCC, Bruce champions veteran financial education and financial counseling programs that help military families reduce debt, improve credit, and build stronger money management habits. His work directly supports financial readiness for the military community, empowering service members to make informed decisions about their financial futures. Cryptocurrency and Military Financial Decisions One of the most eye-opening discussions centers around cryptocurrency and its growing role in military financial behavior. Surveys reveal that over a quarter of active-duty service members and military spouses have invested in cryptocurrency – double the national average. Bruce warns of the volatility and limited consumer protections in this market, emphasizing that financial education for service members must now include guidance on emerging investment trends. Programs like the NFCC’s financial counseling services play a crucial role in helping military members understand these risks and build responsible investment strategies. Bridging the Financial Communication Gap in Military Households Military families often face emotional and logistical challenges when it comes to managing money. Despite frequent financial discussions, more than half of military couples report that money management is a source of conflict. Bruce explains that improving financial literacy in military households requires practical tools—like budgeting checklists and step-by-step resources—to support better communication. Strengthening military financial readiness starts with helping families have productive, informed conversations about money. Addressing Payday Loans and Hidden Financial Traps Another major concern discussed is the continued use of payday loans and “buy now, pay later” services among service members. These short-term solutions can easily spiral into debt traps that undermine financial wellness for military families. Bruce urges the community to take advantage of trusted military banking partners and veteran financial assistance programs instead of predatory lenders. Resources like those provided by the NFCC and Armed Forces Bank can help service members avoid costly mistakes and build long-term financial security. Strengthening Financial Education for Service Members Bruce emphasizes the importance of collaboration between military banks, nonprofit organizations, and educators to expand access to financial education for veterans and service members. This partnership-driven approach ensures that every military family has the tools and knowledge to handle challenges such as debt management, savings strategies, and home or business financing. Improving military financial readiness not only strengthens individual families but also enhances overall community resilience. Get Support from the NFCC If you’re a service member, veteran, or military spouse seeking financial guidance, the NFCC offers certified financial counselors who specialize in veteran financial education and support. Visit www.nfcc.org or call 1-800-388-2227 to access free or low-cost counseling that helps with budgeting, debt reduction, and credit improvement. This episode of Militarily Speaking highlights the ongoing need for financial readiness in the military community. By increasing awareness, improving access to reliable resources, and prioritizing financial education for service members, families can take proactive steps toward a more secure and confident financial future. Welcome to the "Militarily Speaking" podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery. In this episode of “Militarily Speaking,” Tom and Jodi sit down with Rob Bergquist, co-founder and Executive Director of Cell Phones for Soldiers. Rob shares the inspiring journey of how he and his sister Brittany started the nonprofit organization at the ages of 12 and 13 to help military members stay connected with their families. Find out how they’re continuing to innovate and serve the military community through programs like Minutes that Matter, Helping Heroes Home, and future plans, including the launch of their Soldiers Mobile Program.“Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are. Ep. 80 – How a Teen's Piggy Bank Changed Soldier Communication ForeverIn today's interconnected world, access to communication is a fundamental necessity. Yet, for many of our service members and veterans, this basic need can sometimes be out of reach. This episode brings us an inspiring story of how two young siblings turned a moment of empathy into a transformative movement with their nonprofit organization, Cell Phones for Soldiers. The Mission to Help Soldiers Call Home In 2004, Rob Bergquist and his sister Brittany were just 12 and 13 years old when they felt moved by the plight of a soldier burdened with an $8,000 phone bill upon returning from Iraq. Motivated by a personal connection—two cousins actively serving overseas—the siblings decided to act. What began as a small fundraiser with a modest $21 collected from their classmates blossomed into a nationwide initiative. Encouraged by supportive parents and a local bank that believed in their mission, Rob and Brittany quickly garnered $8,000 to pay off the soldier's debt. Their swift success catapulted them into the national spotlight, forming the foundation of Cell Phones for Soldiers. Expanding to Help More Service Members Initially focused on providing calling cards to service members, Cell Phones for Soldiers has since grown exponentially. Through innovative methods like recycling used cell phones and electronics, the organization has funded over 450 million minutes of free talk time for deployed troops. As technology evolved, so did the nonprofit. With increased connectivity becoming available globally, the demand for calling cards diminished, prompting the Bergquists to adapt their services. In 2012, they expanded their mission by establishing the Helping Heroes Home program, offering emergency assistance grants to veterans in need. More recently, the launch of Cell Phones for Soldiers Mobile furthers their reach, providing free smartphones and a year of service to veterans. This initiative aims to connect 30,000 veterans over the next three years, helping them access vital resources and maintain ties with loved ones during their transition to civilian life. Partnerships and Future Goals of Cell Phones for Soldiers Rob emphasizes the importance of partnerships in the organization’s success. Collaborations with third parties like logistics specialists that help manage the influx of donated phones, help ensure maximum resource efficiency. Additionally, partnering with local organizations and service officer networks allows Cell Phones for Soldiers to target veterans effectively and connect them with the right resources. Looking to the future, Rob is excited about the potential of a Cell Phones for Soldiers mobile app. This app will enhance the service by providing veterans with access to essential local resources at the touch of a button. Rob envisions a robust community of veterans supporting each other, with phone bills potentially contributing to the sustainability of this growing network. Family-Driven Dedication A testament to its widespread success is the unwavering family involvement from day one. Both Brittany and Rob have been pivotal in navigating the nonprofit’s course, celebrating their achievements and learning from challenges. As Rob reflects on his father's recent passing, he finds deep motivation in honoring his dad through ongoing service, emphasizing that every connected veteran is a tribute to his father's legacy. Get Involved with Cell Phones for Soldiers Cell Phones for Soldiers relies on support from individuals and corporations alike. Whether it’s donating an old phone, becoming a drop-off location, or fostering corporate partnerships for device turnover, every contribution makes a significant impact. As Rob often advises aspiring non-profiters, the key to their enduring success lies in staying focused on the mission while being willing to innovate and adapt. Rob and his family continue to inspire with their commitment to bridging gaps in communication for those who serve. With over two decades of service, Cell Phones for Soldiers stands as a beacon of support for veterans seeking to stay connected with those who matter most. As technology advances, so too will the creative solutions and profound impact of this family-run organization, ensuring that no veteran is ever left without a lifeline. Welcome to the "Militarily Speaking" podcast with Tom McLean and Jodi Vickery. In this episode of “Militarily Speaking,” Tom and Jodi talk with Katy Saunders, Program Director at HeroBox. Together they delve into HeroBox's mission to provide personalized care packages to deployed service members, their Hero Day events, and how individuals and organizations can support deployed military members.“Militarily Speaking” is a podcast produced by Armed Forces Bank that is dedicated to the military lifestyle and all the things that makes the military community who they are. Ep. 78 – Supporting Deployed Service Members with HeroBoxIn a world where everyday challenges often obscure the sacrifices made by our service members, HeroBox emerges as a beacon of support and gratitude for those deployed overseas. HeroBox was founded with a mission to provide personalized care packages to deployed service members, bridging the gap between home and the frontlines. The initiative began when its founder noticed that a loved one, while deployed, needed a more tailored care package. Today, HeroBox has grown to support nearly a million deployed service members with the help of over 20,000 registered sponsors and countless Hero Day events. The Power of Personalization for Service Members A key element that sets HeroBox apart from other care package organizations is its emphasis on personalization. As described by Katy Saunders, donors can directly communicate with service members, ensuring that they receive items that cater to their specific needs and desires. Whether it's a request for gloves in cold regions or a servicemember’s favorite snacks, the personal touch can transform a care package from being merely a box of goods to a heartfelt reminder of home and support. Hero Day Events: Building Community Ties to Support the Troops Hero Day events are one of Katy's favorite aspects of her role, as they foster both community involvement and support for the troops. Corporations, businesses, and even classrooms can organize Hero Days to pack and send personalized care packages. The events act as team-building exercises while serving as meaningful contributors to HeroBox's mission. Spreading the Word and Growing the Impact Although HeroBox is relatively small, its impact is significant, thanks in part to word-of-mouth and community engagement. The team is dedicated to ensuring that every service member feels the appreciation and support of those at home. With plans to expand into supporting homeless veterans, HeroBox is poised to continue its mission of service and care. How You Can Help Deployed Military Members Katy shared that individuals and companies interested in supporting HeroBox can visit their user-friendly website (herobox.org) to get involved. Whether through financial donations or by organizing Hero Day events, every contribution helps extend their reach. The website provides various donation options, including sponsoring individual care packages or supplying essential items for multiple troops. HeroBox stands as a testament to the impact a small, dedicated organization can have on the lives of our military personnel. By offering personalized, thoughtful support and fostering community involvement, HeroBox not only empowers service members but also strengthens the very fabric of the communities that support them. As listeners and readers rally around this cause, HeroBox continues to fulfill its promise to those who serve selflessly and bravely. Ep. 77 – The Astonishing Legacy of a 9/11 Firefighter and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation The episode kicks off with a discussion about the Tunnel to Towers Foundation's beginnings, closely tied to the events of September 11, 2001. Jack Oehm shares the harrowing yet inspiring story of firefighter Stephen Siller, who on that fateful day ran nearly two miles through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers with 60 pounds of gear on his back. Though Stephen lost his life in his heroic efforts, his legacy lives on through Tunnel to Towers. The Foundation was established by his family to honor not only him but all the victims of 9/11 and the brave souls who came to their aid. Honoring Their Sacrifice Jack paints a vivid picture of the Foundation's evolution from its grassroots beginnings, reflecting on its commitment to supporting communities affected by 9/11 and subsequent tragedies. One significant turning point was the decision to build the first "smart home" for quadruple amputee and fellow Staten Islander, Brendan Marrocco. This initiative was the start of a larger program that has since provided more than 200 smart homes to severely injured veterans. Building Smart Homes and More The creation of smart homes is just one facet of the Foundation's impactful work. These homes are designed to adapt to the needs of their occupants, offering a level of independence that many lost in service to their country. In 2023 alone, the Foundation plans to build 60 more smart homes, demonstrating a commitment to expanding their support. Paying Off Mortgages for Fallen Heroes Jack also discusses other pivotal programs such as their efforts to pay off mortgages for families of fallen first responders and Gold Star families. This support extends a lifeline to those who have lost loved ones in the line of duty, ensuring they have one less burden to bear during their time of grief. Helping Tunnel to Towers Foundation Throughout the podcast, the hosts and Jack emphasize how listeners can contribute, whether through participating in various fundraising events like golf outings and 5K runs or by donating directly to the Foundation. One of the most accessible ways to support is their $11 a month donation initiative, which significantly aids in continuing the Foundation's vital work. Looking Forward: A Commitment to Never Forget As the conversation winds down, Jack highlights the Foundation's latest ambitious endeavor: a program aimed at eradicating homelessness among veterans. It's a testament to their evolving mission, ensuring no veteran is left without a roof over their head.
