Anthony Bastone is 25 years old and is from Baltimore, MD. When he was 17 years old he was diagnosed with Scoliosis. He had a 27 degree curve in his spine. After being diagnosed he decided that he wanted to got though with a surgery that would straighten his spine. The surgery was a success and 1 month later he was back in the gym working out. A couple years later while Bastone was in college he a had a slight discomfort in his back that went away after a couple days. Even though he couldn't really feel anything he knew that something was wrong. X-rays showed that he had broken the titanium rods in his back. After getting the news he went ahead and had his second surgery. Shontez Davis is 18 years old and is from North Carolina. When he was 13 he was diagnosed with a tumor in his leg. After multiple visits to the doctor they decided to do a surgery to remove the tumor. After starting the surgery the doctors realized that his veins and arteries wrapped around the tumor which made the surgery significantly more dangerous. The surgery ended up lasting 20 hours and by the end the doctors were able to remove the tumor. Unfortunately a couple months later scans showed that the tumor had grown back. This time his doctor decided to treated the tumor with chemotherapy. After chemo failed to decrease the size of the tumor Shontez had a difficult decision to make. To undergo more chemo, go through another risky surgery or amputate his leg. Robin Israel is 22 years old and is from Chicago, Illinois. When Robin was 16 she was diagnosed with POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome.) POTS is an autoimmune disease that affects blood flow. After her diagnosis she quickly found out that she couldn't compete athletically anymore, she played varsity soccer and cross country. Robin was eager to find a way to start to feel better. She ended up seeing a nutritionist who told her that if she changed her diet that she could see some improvement from her symptoms. Robin ended up making some major changes to the food that she ate and in turn started to see her symptoms subside. Dior Scott is 21 years old and is from Antioch, California. Dior was the star wide receiver for the Laney College Eagles in Season 5 of Last Chance U on Netflix. The season takes you through Dior's story but we wanted to bring him on the podcast to dive deeper into his life. Growing up Dior and his Dads relationship slowly deteriorated, it got to the point where Dior couldn't look at his Dad as a father figure anymore. His turbulent relationship with his Dad caused a lot of set backs in his life, especially when it came to football.  After he ran away his Dad pulled him off his high school football team which caused him to lose his scholarship offers. Dior decided to take matters into his own hands, he attended Laney Community College in hopes that he could earn a scholarship by impressing college scouts. He ended up attending Laney and playing for Coach Beam. In order to survive he worked at Wing Stop and lived in his car. He did it all so he could one day live his dream of making it to the NFL.After playing 11 games at Laney he was left with 0 offers. Despite having zero offers Dior was still confident that he had what it takes to get a scholarship, he just needed an opportunity to prove himself. With the help of Coach Beam he got the chance to walk on to the University of Hawaii football team. After working his ass off, Dior finally earned what he worked so hard to get. Baby Rue was born on 12/11/20, after a high risk pregnancy, where her mom had hyperemesis, circumvallate placenta, and preterm labor symptoms that started in October. After her parents noticed that she was having breathing problems at home they brought Rue back to the hospital. Doctors refused tests and just said that she had complex acid reflux and a milk protein allergy. After getting an MRI her parents were driving home went they got a phone call to rush Rue back to the hospital. When they returned to the hospital they were met with news that Rue had a large tumor under her brain near her optical nerves. Since her diagnosis, her parents have been living in the hospital to be with her during her surgeries and treatments. Both parents are unable to work and are being told that insurance wont cover some surgeries and medications. Spencer is a double amputee and lost both his legs from the pelvis down at the age of five.  He was born with Sacral Agenesis which is a rare birth condition characterized by partial or complete absence of sacrum and lower lumbar spine.  In the first part of the episode Spencer shares how growing up without legs affected his life and his parents lives. Halfway through the episode Spencer talks about his college experience and what it was like for him to come out while living in Salt Lake City. He also opens up about what is was like to come out to  his parents. The later half of the episode is focused on Spencers accomplishments. Dick Bork is 27 years old and is from Midland, Michigan. After he graduated high school he decided that he wanted to serve his country and joined the Marine Corps. Dick talks to us about the time he spent in the Marines. From his first day outside of the wire in Afghanistan to detailed accounts of firefights with insurgent groups. While he encountered life or death situations on a daily basis there was a part of his deployment that stuck out to him the most, the people in Afghanistan. While the news covers the tragic events that happen overseas they fail to cover the other side of the story. Dick talks about how kind the people were and the amazing relationships that he built with the locals. Dick and his other marines felt a duty to protect the people at all costs during their time in Afghanistan. After coming back from his deployment Dick had a tough time finding his identity as a civilian and struggled to connect with people. In the later half of this episode he talks about what this transition was like and who he adapted back to life outside of the Marine Corps.Dick opened up a gym called Valhalla Warriors Club which gives people a place to heal and grow. He wants to help people heal from their traumas and have peoples thoughts motivate them instead of consume them. Vicky Agoe is 21 years old and is from Greece. Vicky was born with a visual impairment at birth called retina detachment. This caused her to have extremely poor vision at birth and to eventually lose her sight altogether.  Vicky walks us through the struggles that she has faced in her everyday life. When she first started school she was placed in a school for the blind which allowed her to connect with her classmates but as she grew up and went to college things slowly changed. College became a lot more difficult as she was surrounded by people who didn't understand her and her disability. On top of that none of her classes were geared or adapted in a way to help a visually impaired person. This made college really frustrating for Vicky.  Despite her struggles she is an amazing student who just recently switched her major to special education. Vicky is also on the Greek National Goalball team. Goalball is a team sport designed specifically for athletes with a vision impairment. Participants compete in teams of three, and try to throw a ball that has bells embedded in it into the opponents' goal. Josh Nickerson is 19 years old and is from Texas. Josh's mom was raped by his dad which led him to being born into a broken family. With his Dad out of the picture his Mom would be the one to take care of him and his brothers. While Josh was growing up his mom was abused by her boyfriends and became addicted to drugs. It eventually got to a point where he ended up sleeping in a shopping cart on Christmas. He was then turned over to his Aunt while his mom got treated for her drug addiction. His aunt became a second mom to him. Until one day his Aunt found out that she had breast cancer and Josh was sent to live with his cousins in Las Vegas. He eventually would find himself moving to Texas and that is where he living today. Carlos Rodriguez is 37 years old and is from Modesto, California. Carlos is a photo journalist, a film editor and an Emmy Award winner. He has accomplished a lot in his career but also has gone through some tough situations. In September of 2011 his wife and his 2 month year old son were kidnapped by a fugitive who was on the run from the police. In the first part of this episode Carlos breaks down exactly what happened on the day his wife and his son were kidnapped. In the second part of the episode he shares a different story. It was the middle of the night in 2017 when his car broke down on the side of the highway. He called his Dad and he agreed to come help him fix it. When his Dad opened the door to exit his vehicle he was struck and killed by a drunk driver. Stephen Ludwig aka Stevo is 22 years old and is from North Carolina. Stephen was born with a extremely rare bone disease called Maffucci's syndrome. There are only 250 people in the world that have been diagnosed with Maffucci's. His condition causes his bones to grow in all different shapes and sizes around his body. The most noticeable difference is that one of his legs is 9 inches shorter than the other. To make up for the difference he wears a big platform on the bottom of his shoe. The remarkable thing is that despite his limitations he still excels at sports and has an extremely competitive nature. In this episode Mike tells his story of being incarcerated and overcoming a decade long heroin addiction.  Mike gives us vivid accounts of overdosing and breaks down moments when he tried to take his own life. After being charged with multiple felonies he spent a total of 5 years in prison between 2006 and 2011. After leaving prison he went right back to using heroin. After surviving an attempted suicide by overdose in a hotel room he decided that he needed to make a change. He joined a 12 step program that would get him on the road to recovery. I've never listened to your podcasts, until today. Listening to the story I tuned into, I really enjoyed how smoothly the conversation went. You consistently kept things moving.
