Pre-Order Your Copy of Minimalist Moms: Living & Parenting with Simplicity ( https://www.amazon.com/Minimalist-Moms-Living-Parenting-Simplicity/dp/1642505099 ) ----------------------------- Have you heard of the line, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes” ? In a more straightforward manner it means: go outside. I love and agree with this notion as I try to get myself outside even when temperatures dip under freezing or quickly make me break a sweat due to humidity (which I prefer less than cold). Anyways, a couple of years ago, I stumbled upon the book, There’s No Such Thing as Bad Weather: A Scandinavian Mom’s Secrets for Raising Healthy, Resilient, and Confident Kids ( https://www.simonandschuster.com/authors/Linda-Akeson-McGurk/2086574039 ). It changed my perspective when it came to getting my kids outside. I felt freer, and more accepting of dirt and mud. All of that to say, it’s quite cold in Ohio right now and I was thinking about how important it still is for children to get outside (even for just 15 minutes here and there) so I reached out to author, Linda McGurk to see if she’d join me to share about how we can encourage our children outside each day, the differences in American and Scandinavian parenting, how to manage weather extremes and much more... Today I bring you my conversation with author and journalist, Marta Zaraska. We spoke about longevity and how we can actually apply our minimalist mindset when it comes to pursuing a long, healthy life. It’s Marta’s belief that the very same efforts that rejuvenate our bodies and help us live long also help us grow as people: nurturing relationships, developing better mental habits, becoming kinder, more empathic, more involved in the community. We become so fixated on miracle diets, miracle foods, miracle supplements etc. We skip gluten and invest in exercise gadgets. We swallow vitamins. We obsess about BMI. While healthy nutrition and physical activity are indeed important for health, there are things we all too often sacrifice that have an outsize impact on our centenarian potential. Friendships. Purpose in life. Empathy. Kindness. Volunteering. Science shows that these 'soft' health drivers are often more powerful than diet and exercise. Throughout the episode, we'll dive into more of what Marta has researched in her book. Join me today for a bonus interview with author, Kristy Cambron. Kristy is a historical fiction author who has also recently released a line of verse mapping study bibles. If you can’t tell from the title, this episode is geared towards Christians; I myself proclaim to be a follower of Jesus; however, it’s my desire that this podcast isn’t geared towards one isolated perspective. I hope if you don’t consider yourself religious you’ll listen along or join me back here next week to pick up with our regular Tuesday episodes. I do have an audience of Christian followers and this input was too important to me to pass up. With the new year approaching, I know a lot of us desire to dive into Scripture but feel as though we 1) don’t know where to start or 2) don’t have the time. Kristy will share what it means to ‘verse map’ and how it can help you approach the Word in an unmuddied, efficient, meaningful way. Today I bring you my conversation with simplicity coach, Jennifer Burnham. This is Jennifer's second time on the podcast (her first appearance was back on episode eighty-two). Jennifer is a believer in that organizing isn't complicated, time is sacred, and money is a renewable resource. Her work is dedicated to listening to the story your stuff is telling and then helps you rewrite it one room at a time. In this conversation, we'll discuss whether our possessions are the chain or the anchor in life, how to plan our way out of 'busy-ness' and how to create more white space in our schedules. I called today’s episode ‘post-holiday should to good’. The week between Christmas and the New Year can leave me in a bit of a funk/fog. There are things we feel like we should do but, my guest today, Robyn Conley Downs ( https://realfoodwholelife.com/ ) , believes we should turn the should into good. It’s pretty easy to go through your to-do list and start seeing which items you are doing because you feel like you should. So quickly, this season that is supposed to be full of light, joy, and hope, adds up in tasks from various categories. Whether you feel that you should because you used to in the past or because you see someone else doing it, flipping the script to how you want to feel, from should to good, will allow you to reclaim your experience, attention, and energy. I have a fun episode for you today. We’ll be talking about thrifted Christmas gift bundles. My friend, Whitney Varnau will be joining me to discuss what exactly a thrifted gift bundle is and how exactly she organizes these bundles for her virtual thrift shop. I’ll also end the podcast with some of my ideas for creating bundles of your own. Today I’m talking Christmas minimalism with author, Meg Nordman. Her recent release, Have Yourself a Minimalist Christmas, is a great resource as you navigate the holiday season. We live in a society where we’re bombarded with advertisements and, let’s be honest, our children’s irrational input; it’s hard to be decisive and intentional when it comes to the holiday season. I hope this episode assists you as you simplify your homes, schedules and gift giving this year. Disclaimer: Maybe don't listen to this one with the kiddos - we discuss Santa around the halfway point! A new series focused on ‘real’ minimalist moms: It’s odd to refer to this series that way but I wanted to encourage the everyday mom that you don’t have to go to extremes (or have a giant platform) to influence minimalism to those around you. *About Jeanette:* Jeannette Cleveland is a Christian, a wife and a stay-at-home mama of 3 small children ages 4, 2, and 10 months. Before having kids, she taught math at a public high school in Durham, North Carolina. She enjoys reading about simple living, counseling others on personal finance through her church, and hosting people in her home. Jeannette began pursuing a minimalist lifestyle about 4 years ago after the birth of her first child. A few months into the journey her life was dramatically altered when her little brother passed away of an opioid overdose at the age of 24. Minimalism has been a helpful tool for her as she has navigated grief and processed physical & emotional baggage in the wake of his death. Pursuing a minimalist lifestyle has helped keep her home, budget, and life from being filled to the max with trivial stuff so she can focus on what matters most to her: loving others. She views the greatest gift of minimalism to be how it frees up space and resources so one can be more generous and more hospitable with less stress. *Discussed in this episode:* * Online Minimalist Party Shop: Simply Lifted ( https://simplyliftedshop.com/ ) * Book: The Lazy Genius Way by Kendra Adachi ( https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/let-them-eat-dirt-saving-your-child-from-an-oversanitized-world_marie-claire-arrieta_b-brett-finlay/11619398/#isbn=1771642548&idiq=34025189 ) * Book: The Art of Happy Moving by Ali Wenzke ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/0062869736/?ascsubtag=amzn1.ideas.DL4M6AD2Z4ZN&linkCode=ic6&ref=idea_lv_dp_ov_d&tag=aiponsite-20 ) Let’s keep the conversation going on Facebook ( https://www.facebook.com/minimalistmomspodcast/ ) or Instagram ( https://www.instagram.com/minimalistmomspodcast/ ) ! And, don’t forget to leave a rating or review on iTunes. Each review is so appreciated as it helps other mamas find me! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Love this podcast! These two take a realistic approach to simplifying their lives and bring us along on the journey. Easy to listen to and they inspire me to keep working at simplifying my own life. Plus it's super cool that they also live in Ohio!
