There are many iterations of the immigrant story of coming to America with a limited amount of money– or if any at all. Growing up with parents that had to go through this can leave deep impressions on younger generations– where money is scarce and it must be saved. While saving and budgeting is a great way to future-proof, it might not be the best way to make that money work for itself; which is why financial education is so important. For this episode, I’ve invited over Anjali Jariwala, a career changer that started in tech but quickly grew tired of the 80-hour workweek. After transitioning to financial planning, working up the ranks, then ultimately leaving to start her own firm, Anjali found her passion in helping minorities, immigrants, children of immigrants, and young couples with families trying to build wealth. If you think you’re bad with money, there might be more to it than just bad planning! With behavioral finance only formally discovered as early as 50 years ago, there’s been almost a lack of conversation around it. At the end of the day, after people invest, the question that’s asked runs more along the lines of “Is this enough?” and, “Am I going to be okay?” In this episode, I’m joined by Brian Portnoy, the founder of Shaping Wealth, and the author of books that discuss and talk about behavioral finance. With over 15 years of experience, Brian coined the term funding contentment as a way to really hook people into understanding the relevance of how our earning abilities affect both our happiness and our peace of mind. Growing up, we often looked up to those that have achieved what we aspire to be– but for minorities, it can be hard to progress in a world where we don’t see people of color succeed, or we find that they have much bigger hurdles to overcome. It can be intimidating, but that is exactly why we need to face these issues and create the space for change to take place. For this week, I'm joined by Valerie Rivera, a certified financial planner who risked everything to start her own firm. As first-generation money, the risk she took is something I’m sure a lot of us are familiar with at different scales. While a lot of companies talk the talk, only a handful ever walk the walk and stand by their promises to be inclusive towards minorities. While indeed the world is changing, the fight is far from over to have financial education and opportunities available to our people. For this episode, I’ve invited Lazetta Braxton, co-CEO of 2050 Wealth Partners, and a social entrepreneur that aims to amplify diversity, inclusion, and equality in the financial planning profession. It is through her own consulting firm, Lazetta & Associates, that she is able to create her own change by employing a “no fear, no shame” zone so her employees and associates feel like they are in a safe space. For a lot of minority business owners, building wealth is much more than just the glitters and gold of the entrepreneur title. Business profit can mean the difference between going hungry and keeping your family fed. As an advocate for financial education, I really wanted to bring someone onto the show that can showcase how a different system of cash management can improve the family business profit over time. In this episode, I’m joined by Susanne Mariga, a CPA with a passion to put an end to entrepreneurial poverty and improve minority family legacies. With over two decades of experience, Susanne has practiced and perfected the Profit First cash management system which has lifted thousands of entrepreneurs from struggle to success. So if you’ve been struggling and can’t seem to strike a balance with your cash management, Susanne definitely has something for you to try out! We’ve talked so much about financial planning on this podcast, but there’s a much bigger picture we also need to consider when we lay down our finances. And that’s life planning– where we aim our financial goals based on what we want to achieve in our lifetime and how we can support our dreams. In this episode, I’m joined by George Kinder, founder of the Kinder Institute of Life Planning. Harvard-educated, George spent his life revolutionizing financial planning advice for 35 years by training over 3,000 professionals across 30 countries. Financial literacy is not something that comes easy for a lot of people– oftentimes people are ashamed and shy away from complicated terms. This is especially true for those that speak another language as their mother tongue. In this episode, I’m joined by Diana G. Yanez, founder of All The Colors. For a long time, gender and racial equality stood far from ever being recognized and addressed. It’s only in recent years that we as a society have progressed to be much more inclusive and representative of minorities in the financial planning field. In this episode to celebrate women’s month, I’m joined by Dr. Miranda Reiter, Ph.D., an accomplished individual that has well over 20 years of experience in the field of financial planning. With her credible studies into the racial differences in life insurance, Miranda aims to bring to light the systemic and historical issues that present themselves in the financial literacy of households of color. Welcome to the second episode of the Minority Money Podcast for Women’s History Month! This episode will be guest-hosted by Mari Miles-Mattingly, featuring Rosa Chalekian– previously a guest for Episode 102 alongside her husband, Alex. In this episode, Mari and Rosa dive into their experience as women still actively fighting for basic respect in different parts of society. From the home to the workplace, it’s only recently that people have grown comfortable having a woman in power or allowing the glass ceiling to break. As entrepreneurial women, the struggle is only amplified– where doubt is placed on their capabilities to deliver despite accomplished and well-proven backgrounds. If you’ve ever felt like people have put you down for your gender, then we hope that this episode empowers you to prove everyone wrong and achieve your dreams! Welcome to the conclusion of the Black History Month celebration but that doesn't mean you should stop studying or celebrating this important part of American history that is often forgotten.  With all that being said, I wanted to talk a little bit more about Black History, but have also decided to invite a very special guest, my wife, Maricela Miles-Mattingly. As a non-black person, I believe it is also of utmost importance to get her view on what Black History means for her and how this month changed her perspective.  She will also be talking about the upcoming Women's Month, so for any of the ladies following this podcast, this is something to stay excited for too.     Highlights >> Mari’s thoughts on black history month  >> Mari’s experience when she visited Nearest Green >> How important it is for Mari to have her kids appreciate both their black and mexican culture >> What women’s history means to Mari >> What Mari is looking towards for Women's History Month.  >> Mari’s final words for you   Connect with Mari  >> https://twitter.com/mrs_three_m (Twitter )         If you loved this episode, you have to listen to these episodes as well:  >> https://minority-money.captivate.fm/episode/an-nfl-champions-guide-to-financially-literacy-money-management-and-wealth-building (Ryan Harris: An NFL Champion’s guide to Financial Literacy, Money Management, and Wealth Building) >> https://minority-money.captivate.fm/episode/how-to-be-a-champion-in-finance-with-lauryn-willaims (How to Be a Champion in Finance with Lauryn Williams [Black History Month Special])  >> https://minority-money.captivate.fm/episode/financial-planning-is-personal-and-you-should-start-now-not-later (Financial Planning is Personal and You should Start Now!)  I’m sure you’re getting tons of value from the podcast! In all our episodes I’ve been able to talk to highly esteemed professionals and they have all given us valuable insight into the world of finance, but for today’s episode I want to take a different approach. Instead of the usual type of guests in this show, I wanted to talk to a regular person and see their experience with crypto. That is why for today I have invited James Urbiztondo and he will be talking to you about what he has been able to do with crypto. So if you’re interested in seeing things from the perspective of a non-professional in this field then make sure to tune in!      Highlights >> James’s background  >> How James learned more about crypto   >> Other coins besides bitcoin that James likes   >> What surprised James the most about getting into crypto >> The sacrifices James has had to make  >> How to get started with crypto    Connect with James  >> https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOHUTuXsKJwkXwo9LVE3NFw (Youtube ) >> https://www.instagram.com/j.stay.trade/ (Instagram) If you loved this episode, you have to listen to these episodes as well:  >> https://minority-money.captivate.fm/episode/monitoring-your-financial-plan-with-dr-preston-cherry-step-7-of-financial-planning (Monitoring your Financial Plan with Dr. Preston Cherry) >> https://minority-money.captivate.fm/episode/the-state-of-the-financial-planning-industry-with-jamie-hopkins (The State of the Financial Planning Industry with Jamie Hopkins) >> https://minority-money.captivate.fm/episode/the-fundamentals-of-finance (The Fundamentals of Finance) I’m sure you’re getting tons of value from the podcast!
