Description

Luke “Mo” Monaldo grew up in Kansas, playing football and baseball. In high school, he was on teams that contended for state titles in both sports. He was also a member of the 2003 KSHAA 6-A State Powerlifting Championship team at Hutchinson High School, bringing home an individual Powerlifting Squat title (385 lb winning lift), as well a 3rd place overall finish in his weight class (165 lb) as a 17-year old his junior year.

Monaldo went on to earn a scholarship to Marshall University where he played for the Marshall University Rugby Team. Mo had an instant impact as a freshman, scoring a 60-yd try the very first time he touched the ball in his first career start, Week 1 against Ohio University in Athens, OH and earning the nickname “X-Factor”. He went on to start the rest of the 2004 season, scoring twice (1-yd, 25-yds) to lead the Thundering Herd to a homecoming victory against the University of Dayton Flyers, on his way to 2004 Ohio Valley Conference Rookie of the Year honors.
Monaldo finished the season despite suffering a separated shoulder and SLAP tear to his labrum in a late season match against the Bearcats at the University of Cincinnati. Injuries that were not diagnosed until after the season. Mo transferred the following year to his home state University of Kansas, fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a Jayhawk.

At Kansas, Mo traded his cleats for a microphone, joining the KJHK radio team, hosting/co-hosting multiple shows and doing play by play/color commentary for the Men’s and Women’s basketball teams, as well as football and baseball. Mo learned to take his love of sports from his years playing them to his analysis over the airwaves. He covered Kansas’ Hall of Fame men’s basketball coach Bill Self on a weekly basis and covered Self’s teams’ success all the way to the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Title in 2008.
Mo interned for several organizations in sports during his time in college. He was an intern with the Wichita Wranglers, then the Royals’ AA-affiliate, the summer of 2005, between Marshall and Kansas. In 2007, he interned at WHB 810, a sports radio station in Kansas City. In the summer of 2008, Mo interned at Sportstalk 980 in Washington, DC, a internship which he parlayed into a job with the station as sports reporter after graduating from Kansas in December of 2008. By that time, they had become an ESPN Radio affiliate, ESPN980, and Monaldo has covered games and events all over the DMV since 2008. He covered the area’s highs and lows, from 100-loss baseball teams to Stanley Cup Champions and everything in between. He currently covers games for The TEAM980, the new and current incarnation of the original station he has spent the last decade covering DMV sports for.

DMV Teams/Events Mo has covered the following for ESPN Radio:
Baltimore Orioles, Georgetown Hoyas, George Mason Patriots, NCAA Men’s Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight games, Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course, University of Maryland Terrapins, Washington: Capitals, Nationals, Redskins and Wizards.
Mo knows sports because he has played and covered them his entire life. He has reported and written about them from years for ESPN Radio and he wants to bring that expertise and experience to the podcast world.
