Mark Mahaney is senior managing director and head of Internet research at Evercore ISI. His colleague James West is senior managing director and partner, and a specialist on the energy sector. In this double-length MoneyShow MoneyMasters Podcast segment, these industry titans weigh in on the state of Big Tech, Big Oil, the energy transition, the key forces driving tech stocks in 2024, and much more. Mark kicks things off by laying out his case for being “Compound Constructive” in the tech sector, even as he says we likely won’t see the kind of “once in a decade opportunity” we had there in 2023. He goes on to share his bullish theses on advertising spending, digital advertising effectiveness, cloud computing, and subscription entertainment pricing. He then shares his four top tech sector picks. James takes his turn at the microphone next to discuss trends in the traditional oil and gas industries as well as the clean energy arena. He covers the concepts of “energy poverty” and “energy abundance,” the growing demand for electricity driven in part by tech-linked consumption, and the difference between an energy “revolution” and an energy “evolution” – as well as what impacts those will have on sector companies and investors over the next few years. He then lays out a bullish case for a handful of oil services firms active in the international markets, as well as a trio of software, integrator, and rooftop solar plays in clean energy. Plus, James discusses important topics on the energy transition front, from carbon capture and storage to battery/energy storage to hydrogen and its potential applications in things like steel and cement manufacturing. And he recaps the geopolitical and political forces that could impact energy supply and pricing. Finally, Mark and James provide a preview of what they plan to discuss at the MoneyShow/TradersEXPO Las Vegas, set for Feb. 21-23 at the Paris Las Vegas resort. Carley Garner is senior commodity market strategist and broker at DeCarley Trading. In this wide-ranging MoneyShow MoneyMasters Podcast segment, she shares her outlook on several commodity and other markets. We start by discussing all the “Black Swans” that have impacted resources in the last few years, as well as why Carley expects things to settle down somewhat in 2024. She goes on to discuss pricing, production, and geopolitical trends in crude oil...the reasons why select agricultural commodities could be attractive...and whether, when, and how gold might finally break out to convincing new highs. We later pivot to a discussion on the U.S. dollar and Federal Reserve policy, technical indicators that suggest Treasury yields could fall (yes, FALL) quite a bit over time, and what Carley expects to see happen in stocks once the end-of-2023/beginning-of-2024 volatility cools. Finally, Carley provides a preview of what she’ll discuss with attendees at the 2024 MoneyShow/TradersEXPO Las Vegas, set for Feb. 21-23 at the Paris Las Vegas. Eric Balchunas is Senior ETF Analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. In this interview, the fund expert and author of The Bogle Effect discusses how and why investors continue to flock to ETFs versus traditional mutual funds and other investment vehicles. Even in a year where many investors remained shell-shocked for a while after 2022’s lousy market performance, ETF flows are up to around $250 billion because Exchange Traded Funds offer 6-10 major advantages. Still, what Eric calls the “Bull Market Subsidy” has ensured mutual funds retain a 2-to-1 advantage over ETFs when it comes to total assets. Eric next discusses the SEC’s fight with fund issuers over spot Bitcoin ETFs, noting that the regulatory agency just lost a key lawsuit. He believes there’s a 75% chance a round of 5-7 crypto-focused funds will hit the market in coming months, providing “a bridge from the normal, especially Boomer, world, and the crypto underground”. He also covers the growth in single-stock ETFs, funds that allow investors to go long or short individual names like Tesla (TSLA) on a leveraged and unleveraged basis. He notes “The marketplace is just responding to what the investors are demanding” and says critics shouldn’t compare “hot sauce” to their “main dinner.” Finally, Eric gives a sneak peek at what he’ll discuss at the MoneyShow/TradersEXPO Orlando, set for Oct. 29-31, 2023 at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate. Trump 2.0 has officially begun...and everything from stocks to currencies to crypto is moving in response. But what about ENERGY? How will underlying commodities like crude oil and natural gas – not to mention energy stocks – behave in the second Trump Administration? What impact will “Drill, baby, drill” policy...a lighter regulatory touch...and other factors have on production, supply, pricing, and more? I sat down with @RobertBryce – noted energy-sector author, lecturer, filmmaker, and podcaster – to get the answers for this week’s MoneyShow MoneyMasters Podcast. We begin by chatting about Robert’s extensive, multi-decade career covering the industry, which includes projects like the docuseries “Juice: Power, Politics & The Grid” and the book A Question of Power: Electricity and the Wealth of Nations. Then we discuss the impact of President Trump’s policies and politics on the energy markets. That includes what regulatory rollbacks and the opening up of new regions to oil and gas drilling means (and DOESN’T mean) for US exploration and production. Robert also weighs in on the future of US LNG exports…the impact of data center growth and AI-driven demand for electricity on energy prices...and which subsector of the natural gas industry he thinks investors should focus on.We next pivot to geopolitics, discussing what Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and rising US-Iran tensions mean for energy markets and investors. Plus, we talk about why “Drill, baby, drill” supply concerns haven’t kept US crude oil futures from rising 10% since the November election – or natural gas prices from surging an astonishing 46%. Finally, Robert previews what he’ll cover at the MoneyShow Masters Symposium Dallas, scheduled for April 4-6 at the Hilton DFW Lakes.
