We'll be taking a bit of a break from movies for a while. An explanation as to why and a replacement podcast are here all in one place for your convenience. DethRants will be on a separate feed going forward so be sure to follow it and the Bluesky account @DethRants. We will be back intermittently with movie podcasts so stay subscribed here too!
We're back to that early 2000's sweet spot of Action/Fantasy/Horror that we love so much with 2004's critically panned (unless you're Roger Ebert) "Van Helsing". So grab your stake gun and join us for a rant about the film taking itself way more seriously than we do, so much CGI (but it's still no Spawn), an overly dramatic Dracula, a more philosophical Adam, cool little Boggart dudes and a Werewolf with some serious Fabio hair  Follow us on BlueSky @monorants, Twitter @rantsmono, Instagram: MonoRants_The_Boys or send your own rants to monorantspodcast@gmail.com
It's time to live, (laugh at Tom Cruise)die and repeat with 2014's action sci-fi "Edge of Tomorrow. So on you feet maggots and join us for a rant about excellent chaos, entertaining deaths, exploiting your gimmick, expendable J Squad, exactly what the mimics are and just generally being a great all rounder. Follow us on BlueSky @monorants, Twitter @rantsmono, Instagram: MonoRants_The_Boys or send your own rants to monorantspodcast@gmail.com
We're back to movies (and, you know, in general) this week and Mono needed a palette cleanser so we watched a bunch of teens get murdered in elaborate ways in 1998's "Urban Legend". So grab one of the many available parkas and join us for a rant about getting the most out of your character actors, punishing the wrong person, some timely hating on Jared Leto, defending goths, respecting fairies, and the problem with urban legends these days. Follow us on BlueSky @monorants, Twitter @rantsmono, Instagram: MonoRants_The_Boys or send your own rants to monorantspodcast@gmail.com
Well we made it to the end of Teen Drama Month and Mono has had his fill, with the final straw being the Pretty Little Liars Pilot episode. So join us for a rant about confusing openings, unlikeable characters, dodgy relationships, A's unbelievable omniscience, a not fat fat girl, Ciara overloading Mono with info and Mono being made feel nostalgic for Twilight Follow us on BlueSky @monorants, Twitter @rantsmono, Instagram: MonoRants_The_Boys or send your own rants to monorantspodcast@gmail.com
Week 3 of teen drama torture for Mono and things aren't going to plan. We couldn't find the show we planned and then Monzo really enjoyed the back up show. So find out what got mono interested in the Shadowhunters pilot in this rant about trying too hard, being both camp and dark & gritty, some solid world building, a bunch incredibly beautiful & highly skilled loose cannons all under 20 and Ciara trying to spoil everything for Mono. Follow us on BlueSky @monorants, Twitter @rantsmono, Instagram: MonoRants_The_Boys or send your own rants to monorantspodcast@gmail.com
It's week two of Mono's unwilling journey into teen drama. This week is a little more his flavour because it involves vampires (yay) that fall in love with teenagers (oh no). It's the pilot episode of The Vampire Diaries and a rant about the scale of annoyance, meeting vampires outside toilets, updating Buffy, why Stefan is marginally better than Edward and mono shattering any illusion of enjoyment on the second watch. Follow us on BlueSky @monorants, Twitter @rantsmono, Instagram: MonoRants_The_Boys or send your own rants to monorantspodcast@gmail.com
It's March, and March means Ciara gets to punish Mono with trash films, or this year; trash TV shows. So join us for the first of Mono's journey into teen drama TV. We're kicking things off with a rant about the Gossip Girl pilot and why Ciara loves it, whether it's dated, why everything revolves around Serena, Gossip Girl herself being insufferable, the shows "poor" kids and Mono not having anything to hate. Follow us on BlueSky @monorants, Twitter @rantsmono, Instagram: MonoRants_The_Boys or send your own rants to monorantspodcast@gmail.com
For our last in the time travel films we've got a real treat for you. So much so that we went No Spoilers to talk obscure Czech comedy/sci-fi "I Killed Einstein, Gentlemen". So don't shave that beard and join us for a rant about Cleo the cat, more horse and carriage rescues, easy to pronounce names, a stupidly short Wikipedia page, a ridiculously satisfying ending and futuristic Selfie Sticks from the past. More adventures through time this week but with a criminal twist. We're looking at 1981's absurd family film "Time Bandits" and ranting about Kevin's dick parents, Napol-Ian Holm, not knowing our royals from our rectums, wanting more Pansy & Vincent and the best god/devil combo in comedy. Follow us on BlueSky @monorants, Twitter @rantsmono, Instagram: MonoRants_The_Boys or send your own rants to monorantspodcast@gmail.com
We're continuing our journey through history this week with two thoroughly excellent dudes. It's 1989's "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" & a rant about the bromance of Billy the Crates, confusing school with the mall, very loose (but very fun) time travel rules, not getting enough Rufus, the synth pop/cock rock discrepancy and a short history if ice cream. Follow us on BlueSky @monorants, Twitter @rantsmono, Instagram: MonoRants_The_Boys or send your own rants to monorantspodcast@gmail.com
We're done with the 50's for now. This week we're looking at several time periods in Mel Brooks' "History of the World Part 1". Roll up some Roman Red and join us for a rant about the unsurpassable Madeline Kahn, the always welcome Spike Milligan, the again absent Richard Pryor, a heavy Roman focvs, different tiers of Mel's films and why this film ages better than a sequel that came 42 years later. One last 50s sci-fi film but it's a big one. No, medium one. Wait, small one. Of course it's 1957's "The Incredible Shrinking Man". So watch out for that radioactive fog and join us for a rant about our cat playing along, their cat being a star, I Am Legend comparisons, incredible effects and not wanting a comedy remake
We're back after an unplanned break to look at one of the more influential 50's Sci-Fi films in 1951's "The Thing From Another World". So put on an asbestos fire suit and rejoin us for a rant about Atomic Age fears, generals who need porches, running towards radiation, not being a B-Movie, many many characters and one absolutely insane on screen burn.
This week we're looking at a notoriously bad sci-fi we think Is actually pretty good (with some obvious exceptions). It's time for 1957's "The Giant Claw" and a rant about lessons in radar calibration, a really really bad bird that drags the film down, some good sci-fi nuggets, some narration... choices and turning the radio off on your dying men.
We're sticking with 50's Sci-Fi for the month (you know, because it's so Christmas-y). But we've got something with a little bit more meat (and forehead) this week in 1955's "This Island Earth". So assemble your Interocitor and tune it in to this rant about early versions of sci-fi tropes, , a complete disregard for safety, how people in the past look older, a very useless mutant and a proto Hal Jordan that you just can't hate. Well we finally made it to 100 Episodes and, as promised, it's time for the long awaited "Teenagers From Outer Space". So grab your Focusing Disintegrator Ray and join us for a rant about the most B-movie a sci-fi can be, stiff skeletons, DEREK the alien, Space-Nazis, wondering where the commie fear is, some occasionally proper sci-fi and why a man failing to cross the road is one of Mono's favourite cinematic moments. A massive thank you to all our listeners and guests and everyone who's helped us reach this milestone!" 99: BASEketball (1998)

2024-11-1842:21

Hey listener, I hear your sister's going out with... SQUEAK! That's right; it's time for the beautiful mix of Airplane and South Park that is 1998's BASEketball. So join us in the hot tub (the playmate of the year one, not the spinning one) for this rant about overall preferring this over Dodgeball (with one exception), surprisingly little South Park, wanting more live action Matt & Trey, a slow act two, an excellent Robert Stack cameo and the always awesome "Aw Aww". This one is long overdue here at MonoRants. We've threatened it for ages but finally got around to talking our favourite Christopher Nolan film "The Prestige". So watch closely (even though it's a podcast) and join us for a rant about how hard it is to summarise this film, obsession and the cycle of revenge, early foreshadowing and bittersweet endings, the many mysteries to uncover and Tesla as the mystic of the mountain. 97: Ghost Ship (2002)

2024-11-0444:51

The sea is a fickle mistress, and so are streaming platforms. With Desperado nowhere to be found, we turn to a previous streaming no show that's now available. This week it's 2002's "Ghost Ship" and a rant about the inevitable Event Horizon comparisons, one hell of an opener, characters that are kinda just there, a villain who raises more questions than they answer, Gabriel Byrne getting shafted and the appropriate place for Nu-Metal in movies.
