Mike Clemens will break down the Brewers’ breakdown in Game 4 of the National League Division Series and how Milwaukee will have to beat the Cubs at American Family Field on Saturday if they want to advance in the postseason. We’ll also preview the Packers vs. Bengals. And Dr. Kristin Lyerly takes on the latest ridiculous statements from the US Secretary of Health and Human Services. Mornings with Pat Kreitlow is powered by UpNorthNews, and it airs on several stations across the Civic Media radio network, Monday through Friday from 6-9 am. We’ll talk to our Week In Review panel about the focus this week on whether President Trump can send military troops into American cities on a whim. Can you imagine how Oklahoma would react if a Democratic president sent troops from Chicago into their state? An Oklahoma Republican can, and he’s one of the few speaking out about it. The government shutdown rolls on, but Congress is at least working on new ways to fund the military — with one noticeable exception: not paying the troops during a shutdown. Like most other federal workers, members of the Armed Forces likely won’t get their next paycheck, even though Republican leaders could’ve chosen to make that happen. It’s only the latest instance of GOP leaders providing all talk and no action when it comes to supporting the troops, protecting our veterans, and backing the blue. New talks at the state Capitol are being framed as an effort by both Republicans and Democrats to bridge a long disagreement over who should pay for cleanup of sites contaminated by PFAS industrial chemicals. There’s really not much to bridge: The divide is over whether to protect industrial polluters. Republicans say state laws should exempt people like farmers who spread industrial sludge that was later found to have harmful PFAS. Democrats agree but want those farmer exemptions narrowly worded so that industries can’t be lumped in and push the clean-up costs on taxpayers. We’ll talk to Joe Zepecki about that and other topics like the 2026 race for governor, which no longer includes Josh Kaul but might include Mandela Barnes. We’ll visit with Congressman Mark Pocan, fresh off a new round of town halls that allow members of the public to sound off about their dissatisfaction over Republicans shutting down the federal government instead of passing a new federal budget. What’s notable is that Pocan’s town halls weren’t held in his district, the 2nd — instead, he was touring the 3rd Congressional District, since US Rep. Derrick Van Orden chooses not to take questions from the general public. The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t get a sweep of the Chicago Cubs in the National League Division Series, so their punishment for losing yesterday afternoon is to play again at Wrigley Field late tonight. We’ll review how the wheels fell off the bus early, but there’s still time to put them back on. We’ll also review some of this weekend’s upcoming festivals around the state, including one that celebrates a 19th century governor who became one of the pioneers of dairy farming in Wisconsin. Chuck Collins of Patriotic Millionaires, talks about his new book about how concentrated wealth and power are ruining our lives and our planet. Collins, great-grandson of Oscar Mayer, knows about the ways families build immense wealth and use it to gain political power and extract more wealth from the middle class. He’ll outline ways we need to reform our political system before it’s too late. We’ll talk to Dr. Chloe Latham Sikes of the education group IDRA, which fights for fair funding for the many public schools that are threatened by the explosive growth of taxpayer funded vouchers for private schools. We’ll examine what the experiences in Texas and other states can tell us about avoiding a future taxpayer catastrophe when it comes to funding two separate school systems. There was a clear display on Tuesday of the difference between having an attorney general dedicated to public service versus one who’s more interested in being a toadie. Wisconsin’s Josh Kaul has decided to pursue a third term rather than running for governor. Contrast his work to hold the Trump administration accountable to the juvenile ranting done on Capitol Hill by Pam Bondi, who is supposed to be the top law enforcement officer for the American people but would rather continue her audition to please the man she sees as her boss and benefactor. We’ll have our weekly pair of guests taking us from Capitol to Capitol: Cam Stevenson from COURIER joins us live from Washington, DC with the latest on the government shutdown and President Trump’s willingness to play footsie with martial law, and Dan Shafer from The Recombobulation Area gives us the latest on what’s being discussed in Madison, including that controversial court ruling to incorporate Republicans’ race-based voter obstruction into how the state elections commission maintains its voter file. We have some good news and bad news to share about agriculture in Wisconsin. On the plus side, the state is seeing another good crop of apples — so Sheila Everhart with the Wisconsin Agricultural Tourism Association will review the many varieties and the best uses for each. On a larger scale, however, farming in Wisconsin just got tougher thanks to the government shutdown started by President Trump and congressional Republicans. With local Farm Service Agency offices closed, it means farmers are getting no access to no farm program sign-ups, no disaster aid processing, no loan approvals, no access to market data, and more. Despite no evidence of widespread election fraud and a constant stream of legal rulings affirming voting rights, far right extremists aren’t giving up trying to make voting more difficult in Wisconsin. There’s the Waukesha County judge who just ordered the Wisconsin Elections Commission to check the citizenship status of the millions of people on the voter registration rolls — a massive undertaking with no clear method, much less any evidence of its necessity. There are some Republican legislators circulating another bill that would again ban absentee ballot drop boxes, which have shown no security concerns. And now Sen. Ron Johnson cries out against being investigated for his contributions intended to undermine the 2020 election results. What does it say about a party that is so afraid of election outcomes that it will stop at nothing to put up roadblocks to voting? We’ll also review last night’s big NLDS win over the Cubs. Most of the country’s attention may be focused on the government shutdown and how the Trump administration is trying to worsen the pain felt by many Americans, but others are keeping their eye on the root cause of the shutdown: Republican cuts to Americans’ healthcare coverage. We’ll talk to Meghan Roh of Opportunity Wisconsin, one of the groups still busy collecting responses from people as they realize how hard it’s going to be to afford health insurance, if that’s even an option at all. Plus we’ll check in with Civic Media friends Jane Matenaer and John & Gordy. Those billionaires gotta have their tax cuts and President Trump and congressional Republicans will cut whatever they can to pay for them. That includes a program that helps hundreds of children in Wisconsin who are deaf and blind so that they can access adaptive technology and get an education. We’ll talk to the head of a group that assists deaf-blind adults about this disruption toward having a life that’s a little more bearable. Visiting grandkids in Texas, Pat spends a day at a retro arcade filled with classic games dating back 40 years — and wonders if it’s possible to turn back the clock and send other things (and people) back to the ‘80s. We’ll also review our quick turn from summer to fall and look at confidence for the Brewers heading into tonight’s second game of the National League Division Series. Ezra Klein is one of the more influential commentators on the progressive side of the spectrum, but he’s getting an earful after suggesting that Democrats would do well to encourage candidates who have liberal positions but oppose women’s reproductive healthcare rights. Should the party consider putting limits on the rights of half the population to be a fair trade to win more elections? We’ll talk to ob-gyn Dr. Kristin Lyerly for her view of the situation. And we’ll know who the Milwaukee Brewers are playing in the National League Division Series, so Mike Clemens will give us a preview of some exciting postseason baseball. It’s one thing for soldiers and veterans to grouse about their former commanding officers. It’s another thing entirely for veterans in elected office to undermine the US military. But US Rep. Derrick Van Orden hasn’t had pangs of conscience in the past when it comes to tarnishing the uniform he once wore. We’ll hear his latest example of trashing America’s military leadership and giving comfort to enemies abroad. A federal government shutdown is always harmful — more so when the head of the federal government wants government to fail. President Trump is promising thousands of job losses (not just temporary furloughs) as part of his long-term plan to take the “service” out of public service. We’ll talk to COURIER’s Keya Vakil about the ongoing push for a new “Big Lie,” over who’s to blame for the latest manufactured crisis. We’ll also find out if he was as excited about the overnight release of Taylor Swift’s new album as the rest of us. (Sarcasm? Tune in to find out!)
