Uncle Joe

2021-01-1901:04:34

The man now known as “The Longview Serial Killer” was once a child victim to a time in our history where native children were plucked out of their homes to be adopted out to white middle-class families. The little boy who was affectionately called “Joey” by his adoptive mother, grew up to be a terrifying nightmare to many children in the Pacific Northwest. Today’s case is about Joseph Kondro. He found the vulnerable, the less fortunate, and the impressionable and lulled them into safety with his affection and attention. “Uncle Joe” as they called him would steal their childhood and leave them scarred, but for some little girls, he also stole their lives. Small, tight, confined spaces. Not many people like them and most of us have been feeling claustrophobic while stuck at home. One of those small places would be the final resting place for 4 women in the Portland area. It seems shocking and unexpected, especially for Portland, but many people end up having their bodies stuffed in the trunks of cars. In this episode, Murder in the Rain will share four stories about women who were taken, killed, and hidden in their own trunks. Looking to relax? It’s the holiday season and many of us are celebrating with a Christmas tree and the promise of Santa’s visit. While this is normally a happy time for us all, it’s a time for great sadness for one family in Washington State. Ed and Minnie Maurin were an elderly couple who disappeared just before a Christmas party in 1985. Their bodies would later be discovered and the entire town would be left asking what really happened to them. The case quickly grew cold and for over 30 years we were left wondering if anyone would be held accountable for their deaths. In the latest episode, we will share how one man bravely broke his silence and helped uncover a secret buried in this small town. Wondering what to get for people for the holidays? Kurt Cobain. A household name synonymous with grunge, the 90’s and unfortunately, suicide. Although it’s yet to be proven otherwise, for 26 years rumors have persisted that someone besides Kurt took his life. In this week’s episode, Murder In The Rain will examine Kurt’s childhood, his history of mental health and addiction struggles and the so-called evidence presented by a private detective with his own agenda, preventing Kurt from resting in peace. So did Kurt hate his life and want to die or did something more nefarious take place? For additional information and sources visit this week’s MITR blog. In today’s case, Emily will talk about how childhood bullying can be more dangerous than hurt feelings and tears. The impact of bullying stretches from depression and anxiety to alcohol and drug abuse, and in some cases, the trauma is too much to come back from. This is one of those stories; how a teenage decision to get a little bit of revenge impacts an entire community. This is the story of Reena Virk and how a group of peers lured her out and attacked her. For additional information and sources visit this week’s MITR blog. Systemic racism might be a new term for a lot of people, but today we’re going to dive into the judicial side of it. In this episode, Alisha will hold our hands through Oregon’s historically racist laws, but this time it’s to celebrate their undoing! By revisiting the infamous murders of a couple caught up in the Portland mob, we’ll learn about racist roots as to why this law was created in the first place, the lives it affected for nearly a century and how its being overturned will continue to affect Oregonians that are in the appeal process. Three-year-old Karly Sheehan was being abused. Despite multiple investigations into her home life and several people who loved her trying to intervene, her young life was stolen from her. In today’s episode, Emily will describe what happened to little Karly. Joining us in the episode is Karen Spears Zacharias, the author of Karly Sheehan: True Crime Story Behind Karly’s Law. Lately, it has felt that every day brings new tragedy and heartbreak. The loss of lives from civilians standing up to racists and white supremacists is nothing new; it has been going on for generations before us. It’s just that now we can watch it unfold live in the palm of our hands. Today’s story is one of those heartbreaks. The story of citizens that wanted to stand up for what is right and were met with hate and death. When Demetria Hester, Micah Fletcher, Rick Best, and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche stood up against a coward, they had no idea that for some, their lives would change. For others, it would end. In a span of three months, dozens of crimes took place along the west coast’s Interstate Five. What was seemingly multiple culprits committing burglary, rape, and murder turned out to be just one man. Law enforcement agencies worked together to share information and with the help of numerous witnesses they put together at least over 20 sketches of the face of a man dubbed the “I-5 Bandit”, a man who would eventually be known as the “I-5 Killer”. Every state has had marching in the streets. It may feel overwhelming at times, but it feels equally promising that change is inevitable. Today we’ll be telling the story of Aaron Campbell, a young, black, unarmed man that was shot in the back and killed by Portland Police. How a lack of training and communication cost him his life. How the officer fought to be put back on the force. And how that same officer claimed there was never another option. In the early 1980’s, a hunter would become Alaska’s first known serial killer. Instead of the big game he was known for decorating his walls with, he turned his sight to the vulnerable population of sex workers and indegious women. I loved this. I live in Australia and believe me there are very similar problems here too. I recommended this to my niece who is a high school teacher, you really spoke about the issue so well and I believe that she could play it for her students in her Society and Culture class. Great job guys, so eloquent.

I love your podcast, you 2 girls do this so well, I love your presentation, facts, the little flights of humor, and the seriousness & anger at the truth. But mostly your research of facts, the places but most of all your storytelling. I would love you to do an entire book! Well done ladies & a gudah! from Australia. I also like the way it plays out to start with then all these other factors start to unfold........ suddenly!!!!.... Thanks Betsy👍👍
