Many deaths are shrouded in mystery with loved ones going entire lifetimes without ever knowing the truth. A woman in Alabama is working diligently with her family to ensure that her sister’s mysterious death doesn’t remain uninvestigated. When Breana Noojin Nix, a 32-year-old nurse, was found unresponsive in her bathroom by her husband of 9 years, a secret life that no one expected was uncovered. After paramedics couldn’t revive her, her death was quickly ruled accidental, but many people believe that is not the case and that a murder was being covered up. Little Part 2

Little Part 2: “She Rode Alone” Last week, I told you the story of the Cowden Family and how Richard, Belinda, David, and Melissa seemed to have vanished while camping near Carberry Creek Road over the Labor Day weekend of 1974. Over 7 months later, their skeletal remains were discovered- Belinda and the children in a cave- Richard, tied to a tree. With very little to go on, police began looking into local men who would have, not only known the area well but could have been capable of such a monstrous act. It was when they read Dwain Lee Little’s name on the list of recently paroled prisoners the hair on their neck stood up and they felt they might have found the first person of interest. Today, I’ll be telling you about the crimes Dwain committed that landed him in prison, how he came to be released so early, and the harm he was able to commit as a free man. Was he the killer of the Cowden family? Only Dwain and the Cowdens know. For photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. In August of 1997, the quaint little city of Selah, Washington, was shocked to learn that one of their own, Carolyn Clift, was found dead inside her own residence, the victim of a particularly brutal stabbing. Despite multiple eyewitnesses who had heard a disturbance and even glimpsed a potential suspect fleeing the scene, the investigation languished into a cold case. However, a breakthrough occurred providing crucial information that would ultimately crack the case wide open. The Order Part 2

The Order Part 2

2023-11-2842:08

Part 2: “The Names of the Dead” The Order was a gang of white supremacists turned domestic terrorists. Based out of Washington, headed by extremist Robert Mathews and fueled by hate, The Order carried off a series of bank and armored transport robberies in an effort to fund a race war and the eventual overthrow of the government. In the midst of their crimes, they carried out an assassination- that of controversial Denver talk radio host Alan Berg, who was executed in his driveway. On the run after a shootout with the FBI at a Portland, Oregon motel, Mathews and his followers had regrouped at the secluded homes they'd rented at Smuggler's Cove on Whidbey Island, in Puget Sound. On the morning of Friday, December 7, the gang's three safe houses were quietly surrounded by the FBI. Lights and movement could be seen inside as agents prepared to engage with their targets. When they moved in, Mathews opened fire, and a standoff ensued. For photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. The Order Part 1

The Order Part 1

2023-11-2157:51

Part 1: “The Last Angry Man” It started with a sick dream of a violent revolution and a race war. Robert Mathews blamed Jewish people for all of the ills of the world. He wanted to see them annihilated, so he formed a group, culled from other extremist assemblies, and called it The Order. Their aim was to fund the overthrow of the government through counterfeiting and the armed robberies of banks and armored transport vehicles. With success, their brazenness escalated, and they decided to make a statement, with the assassination of a prominent radio host, shot at close range with a silenced submachine gun. Intended as a mission statement to the world, the group was too short-sighted to recognize it was the impetus of their downfall. This is The Order, part 1 of 2: The Last Angry Man. Path Of Pratt Part 3

2023-11-0745:52

Part 3: "Tread" For the last two weeks, I’ve been telling you about the path of Jesse Clarence Pratt. In part one, I talked about his violent history toward partners and their children. In part two, I told you about Carrie Lynn Love; the young woman who began working with Jesse and was fatefully chosen to ride with him out of the state. Her body was recovered in a pile of gravel at a secluded truck stop after her personal items were found off the highway. Jesse was quickly connected to Carrie and arrested for her murder. Today, I’ll be closing out his story by walking you through the trials that took place in an effort to keep him out of society. As graphic as all of these episodes have already been, listener discretion is advised as I will be discussing the torture Carrie contended with, the details it’s claimed Jesse spoke of and his sexual kinks that may have been connected to the murder weapon. This is part three of the Path of Pratt. For photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. Part 2: "Spider" Last week I took you down the path of harm and destruction left behind by Jesse Clarence Pratt. How his partners, Linda, Cheryl, and Nancy, and their children all became victims of his violent temper and his hands. I told you about the kidnapping and rape of Teresa and how Jesse could be the party responsible for the disappearance of Virginia Rambus, and that he was the last person seen with the woman whose body was found in a gravel pile at a rest stop in Oregon- Carrie Love. This week, in part two of three, I’ll be telling you about Carrie and how good detective work paired with strong forensics led to Jesse’s arrest. Path of Pratt Part 1

Path of Pratt Part 1

2023-10-2455:23

Part 1: "The Candyman" Virginia Anne Rambus was only 19 years old when she left her apartment to walk across the complex to meet up with a friend. She started the walk, but never arrived. Her case remains unsolved, but a man of particular interest was living in the same complex at the same time. To those he provided drugs to, he was known as the Candy Man. Police in Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California however knew him as Jesse Clarence Pratt. And if he had remained in prison for the crime he committed in 1980, Virginia might still be with us as would another murder victim. Today, in part one of two, I’ll be telling you about Jesse Pratt’s path of destruction, the many wives, partners, children, and sex workers he left bloodied and abused, the women he may have had a hand in killing, and the teenage victim that earned him the title of “Oldest inmate in an Oregon Penitentiary”, Carrie Love. Part 2: "The Fly" In part one of The Prowler, I told you about the murders of Mary Anne Pohlreich, Carol Beethe, and Randi Levine. Mary Anne was raped and killed in an unknown location, her body left posed after death. Carol and Randi were blitzed in their beds as they slept, beaten, raped, and mutilated. In part two, I'll tell you about the murderer of these women. A sinister man who began life as a lonely, unwanted child who would grow to become the first person ever tried for serial murder in King County, Washington. Part 1: "Extreme Personal Rage" In the Summer of 1990, three women fell into the crosshairs of a dangerous man. They were regulars among Bellevue, Washington's vibrant, hard-partying nightlife, and they were murdered- their broken bodies violated and posed after death. Their killer's method linked them as a series, whose recurrences were growing nearer and nearer, but he'd left few clues aside from his violence. This is The Prowler, part one of two. Today’s episode is unlike any other I’ve done. In the past, I’ve done special episodes regarding active missing persons- but they are usually only about 15 minutes long, sharing the known information in hopes of helping the family. In today’s case, one member of the family reached out to me. The other side of the family isn’t speaking to that person. And the family drama has only added to the chaos surrounding the disappearance of Shane Barton. Today, I’ll be sharing the audio interview I conducted with Shane’s daughters, and the emailed responses from Racheal, his wife. Hopefully, with all the available information presented together, someone will come forward with information about Shane’s location. The Shape of a Man

The Shape of a Man

On a rainy night in September of 1946, Cora Rogers was going about her end-of-day duties. She worked alone, running a market and gas station in rural Greenleaf, Oregon. The lights went out inside much earlier than usual, and a curious neighbor walked over to check on Cora, but she did not answer. The neighbor returned home, figuring she had closed up early and gone to bed. She'd been killed at night and lay undiscovered until the following morning. Though police had the statements of many witnesses from the night of the murder, and a description of the likely killer was broadcast and printed in newspapers, the man simply walked away from the crime along a rural strip of highway blacktop. He has never been identified and the murder in Greenleaf remains unsolved. For photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. In 1998, when the body of a young girl washed up on the shore of the Columbia River in Warrenton, Oregon, it was easy to assume she was another vulnerable person drawn to the Astoria-Megler bridge to end her own life. But her body would tell another story. Authorities had to work quickly to identify her, her killer, and his motive. During the investigation a secret life was uncovered, one that abused and exploited children for years. In today’s case, we’ll discuss the murder of Heather Fraser and the monster who took her life and negatively impacted dozens of others. A turn of luck had led the Cowden family to the Carberry Creek area for a last-minute camping trip. The young family of four were delighted to have the time to indulge in the stunning nature Jackson County offered them. They didn’t have big plans; they were just excited to have time with their two young children to fish and to swim. The cherry on top was the plan of wrapping up the weekend with a dinner at Mrs. Cowden’s mother’s home. For unknown reasons, the family never showed up for that meal. Now, 50 years later, their case remains mostly unsolved, although an early parolee has always held the most suspicion as being the person responsible for what happened to the young family. Today, I’ll be telling you the story of The Cowden family: Richard, Belinda, David and Melissa, and how Dwain Lee Little may be their killer. The Infernal Machine

The Infernal Machine

2023-08-1549:39

For millennia, we've heard of Pandora's box and the dangers held within. For Fern Bowden, a warning to stay away wasn't enough to keep her from opening the strange container her husband kept in the basement. With the lift of a lid and the blink of an eye, lives would literally and figuratively be blown apart. Today I'll be talking about Portland's Pandora's Box murder- and how a man's paranoia drove him to build an infernal machine. y'all are really pretending not to realize the fact that crime skyrocketed after the riots of 2020? that's why police interactions and officer-involved shootings have risen

psychiatry and psychology sure have a lot to answer for. I kind of think this was a premeditated crime but I don't understand why. why kill the guys who were basically his lifeline in a cold unfamiliar place. why strand himself, out in the cold, isolated. I don't accept the caribou theory of triggering a murderous rage. dudes kill things all the time. they like to. they are detached from pretty much everything they do. luckily he did not use a sleepwalking defense.

There was a movie most recently that had these same types of details. I will look it up, but I believe this is called "The Hero Syndrome" not really a hero but the suspect gets a "high" off of the act itself.

I believe these women should know better than to lump this guy in with the "troubled" teenagers they are familiar with, with their alleged "undeveloped" brains, etc. I believe that lumping a genuine psychopath in with the "troubled" kids they claim to know well as a group is misguided and even downright wrong. Kind of malicious actually. They struggle to decipher a reason for this guy's crime (ie his "anger" that "needs to go somewhere" so it is visited on "someone close to him") based on what they allege to know about teenagers as a group, and it is bizarre and demoralizing. As for the even more bizarre and demoralizing outcome of the parole hearing, I hope some minds can be open to the possibility that the outcome was somehow decided by the board *before* the farce of the hearing took place. outside of the usual (and always questionable) procedure, and that the board did not fully comprehend what they had agreed to beforehand until it was far too late. That would explain the visible

I can't wait to listen to this episode! This person was our neighbor, and came to a yard sale we had several years ago. She came by in filthy overalls and a VERY bad wig, and disqusting boots that looked several sizes too big and had been worn for years. She is the ONLY person our dog ever reacted to! When we saw her face on the news a year ir so later, we were shocked!

I remember when both Michella Welch was killed and Jennifer Bastian disappeared. I think it's part of the reason why I love True Crime so much.

I loved this. I live in Australia and believe me there are very similar problems here too. I recommended this to my niece who is a high school teacher, you really spoke about the issue so well and I believe that she could play it for her students in her Society and Culture class. Great job guys, so eloquent.

Read, "Understanding the Borderline Mother." Often, the mother will project negative feelings onto one child, while positive onto the other.
