Many deaths are shrouded in mystery with loved ones going entire lifetimes without ever knowing the truth. A woman in Alabama is working diligently with her family to ensure that her sister’s mysterious death doesn’t remain uninvestigated. When Breana Noojin Nix, a 32-year-old nurse, was found unresponsive in her bathroom by her husband of 9 years, a secret life that no one expected was uncovered. After paramedics couldn’t revive her, her death was quickly ruled accidental, but many people believe that is not the case and that a murder was being covered up. What really happened in the last 4 hours of Breana’s life? Little Part 2

Little Part 2: “She Rode Alone” Last week, I told you the story of the Cowden Family and how Richard, Belinda, David, and Melissa seemed to have vanished while camping near Carberry Creek Road over the Labor Day weekend of 1974. Over 7 months later, their skeletal remains were discovered- Belinda and the children in a cave- Richard, tied to a tree. With very little to go on, police began looking into local men who would have, not only known the area well but could have been capable of such a monstrous act. It was when they read Dwain Lee Little’s name on the list of recently paroled prisoners the hair on their neck stood up and they felt they might have found the first person of interest. Today, I’ll be telling you about the crimes Dwain committed that landed him in prison, how he came to be released so early, and the harm he was able to commit as a free man. Was he the killer of the Cowden family? Only Dwain and the Cowdens know. For photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. Last week we mentioned that this week’s episode is very special to us and is very different from our usual format. When Danielle Tudor was in town a few weeks ago for a political event, she was kind enough to schedule time with us to give us an update of sorts. So, we went to her mother’s home and sat down with Danielle Tudor and Tiffany Edens, both survivors of Richard Gillmore, Portland’s jogger rapist. Last week, I told you about Robert Silveria aka Sidetrack aka The Boxcar Killer, and his years-long series of murders. Sidetrack traveled at will, with no record of his movements, and his pool of victims were the unhoused, the drifters, and the fellow rail hoppers he encountered. People on the fringe- the kind who wouldn't be missed. This week, the end of the murders, the arrest, and many confessions of Robert Silveria, as well as the California police detective who moonlighted as Elvis- a quirk which endeared him to the killer, and also led to this cop writing the actual book on the case. This is Freedom Part 2: The High Line. Episode Host: Josh McCullough For photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. Part 1: "Butchered Up" By the mid-nineteen-nineties, the United States population of train tramps and hobos dropped to only a few thousand from their Depression-era numbers of two million plus. This turn-around began in 1941, when the U.S. began actions during WWII, which led to the military draft, and "the creation of millions of jobs in defense and war industries.” The man we're telling you about today started hopping the rails as a full-time hobo lifestyle in 1991, half a century after the Second World War. He lived as ruler in a kingdom as expansive as the contiguous United States, yet as slim as the space between the rails of the nearly 140,000 miles of freight tracks crisscrossing the country. A nearly unstoppable man, in a world where violence was the law. He called himself Sidetrack. This week, we aren’t talking about him, but about his victims Barbara and her son Patrick. In different ways, Barbara and Patrick both lost their lives to the same man. Today I’ll talk with Patrick about what he remembers of his mother and the chaos surrounding her death. He’ll talk about how it shaped the way reacted as a teen and how he’s turned into a helper as an adult. Part 1: "When You Stop Breathing" When a woman’s body was discovered partially undressed, strangled, and abandoned near the Green River in Washington, it was quickly assumed she had been yet another victim of the Green River Killer. Thankfully, witnesses came forward and gave accurate accounts of what happened to Barbara Jean Hegadorn that night. That information led to the arrest of a man who wasn’t the Green River killer, but a man who was out on parole for another violent attack. This is the story of Barbara Jean Hagedorn. Part 1: "Victims of Opportunity" In the early 1980s, a terrifying pattern started to emerge; young women and girls disappearing from the Seattle-Tacoma area. It would take a little over two years for most people to realize the severity of the pattern. When multiple bodies of strangled females were discovered in the Green River and surrounding forests, the media put the population on high alert, there was a prolific serial killer here in the Pacific Northwest. The Running Men

The Running Men

2024-02-1345:071

When people commit crimes, they often make headlines for going on the lam, doing anything they can to avoid capture and punishment. In today’s episode, Josh is telling three stories of runaway criminals. One who was possibly innocent, yet disappeared and lived under another name for decades. Another is a shady pilot with more than one wife. The third is a man who disappeared in a river when he just so happened to be a few days from going on trial. These three men may have tried to outrun their problems, but their stories are no longer unsolved mysteries. In a recent Murder in the Rain episode, we discussed the missing women of the Yakama Nation in Washington. The huge reservation is home to rivers, wilderness and an uncountable number of dark corners for people to go missing from. This week, we will be sharing the mysterious deaths that have taken place in the same area; all women from the Yakama area who died in ways that either can’t be explained or appear to be possible homicides. As always, we ask that if you know anything about these cases- even the smallest detail- that you contact the local police agency. We’ve been told by another unsolved case that every time their story is shared publicly, they have received some sort of new tip and they are all helpful. So, if you know something, don’t hesitate! These are the mysterious deaths from the Yakama Reservation. Episode Host: Alisha Holland For photos and sources for today’s episode, check out the Murder in the Rain Episode Blog. The Martin Family loaded into their cream-and-red station wagon for a trip up the highway on December 7, 1958. The family was on the hunt for a Christmas tree and greens to make wreaths. From Portland, they drove east into the Columbia River Gorge. Parents Ken(54) and Barbara(48, I know) were in the front, with Ken driving, and their daughters Suzie, Virginia, and Barbie were in the back. As night fell on the Martins' block, a few neighbors noticed the family hadn't returned. The station wagon wasn't parked under the carport, and the lights inside the home were out. No one was home, and they would never be home again. Five members of the Martin family vanished that day, most of them without a trace. In today’s episode, we’re going to explore the unsolved murder of Linda Malcom, a Navy veteran whose body was found engulfed in flames in her Port Orchard, Washington home. Despite multiple leads, the case is still unsolved, but with the help of the right people, it might not stay that way for long. With us today are Jennifer Bucholtz and George Jared who are part of a Cold Case Investigative Team through the American Military University. Jennifer is former US Army Counterintelligence, an instructor in criminal justice and forensic science and works as an investigator for the El Paso County Sheriff's Department. y'all are really pretending not to realize the fact that crime skyrocketed after the riots of 2020? that's why police interactions and officer-involved shootings have risen

psychiatry and psychology sure have a lot to answer for. I kind of think this was a premeditated crime but I don't understand why. why kill the guys who were basically his lifeline in a cold unfamiliar place. why strand himself, out in the cold, isolated. I don't accept the caribou theory of triggering a murderous rage. dudes kill things all the time. they like to. they are detached from pretty much everything they do. luckily he did not use a sleepwalking defense.

There was a movie most recently that had these same types of details. I will look it up, but I believe this is called "The Hero Syndrome" not really a hero but the suspect gets a "high" off of the act itself.

I believe these women should know better than to lump this guy in with the "troubled" teenagers they are familiar with, with their alleged "undeveloped" brains, etc. I believe that lumping a genuine psychopath in with the "troubled" kids they claim to know well as a group is misguided and even downright wrong. Kind of malicious actually. They struggle to decipher a reason for this guy's crime (ie his "anger" that "needs to go somewhere" so it is visited on "someone close to him") based on what they allege to know about teenagers as a group, and it is bizarre and demoralizing. As for the even more bizarre and demoralizing outcome of the parole hearing, I hope some minds can be open to the possibility that the outcome was somehow decided by the board *before* the farce of the hearing took place. outside of the usual (and always questionable) procedure, and that the board did not fully comprehend what they had agreed to beforehand until it was far too late. That would explain the visible

I can't wait to listen to this episode! This person was our neighbor, and came to a yard sale we had several years ago. She came by in filthy overalls and a VERY bad wig, and disqusting boots that looked several sizes too big and had been worn for years. She is the ONLY person our dog ever reacted to! When we saw her face on the news a year ir so later, we were shocked!

I remember when both Michella Welch was killed and Jennifer Bastian disappeared. I think it's part of the reason why I love True Crime so much.

I loved this. I live in Australia and believe me there are very similar problems here too. I recommended this to my niece who is a high school teacher, you really spoke about the issue so well and I believe that she could play it for her students in her Society and Culture class. Great job guys, so eloquent.

Read, "Understanding the Borderline Mother." Often, the mother will project negative feelings onto one child, while positive onto the other.
