The tiny town of Texarkana, which straddles the state line separating Texas from Arkansas, was tormented by a string of violent attacks in the 1940s. A mysterious assailant dubbed 'The Phantom Slayer' preyed upon young couples parked on lovers' lanes, sending Texarkana into a tailspin. Residents gripped by mass hysteria bought out all the door locks, window shades, and ammunition in town. By summer of 1946 the Phantom had faded away, but left an indelible mark on Texarkana as one of the earli...

For years in Salt Lake County, February 9th was a date fraught with nervous anticipation. After the slaying of 6-months-pregnant Sonia Mejia in 2006 and Damiana Castillo in 2008, a dedicated police task force patrolled the area in hopes of preventing a repeat killing in the years that followed. It wasn’t until 2016 that authorities revealed that they knew the identity of the so-called “February 9th Killer,” and the suspect was finally extradited back to Utah in 2022. Today, concerned Utahns e...
