The Copyright Royalty Board published a decision in 2018 to raise songwriter royalties by 44% between now and 2022. In the eleventh hour, Spotify, Amazon, and Pandora submitted an appeal that not only opposed the rate increase, but would also be used as a divisive tactic to roll back royalty rates by one-third, according to NMPA chair David Israelite.Is Spotify technically suing songwriters? However, after a fourth revision, their Chapter 11 plan was approved by the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas that will reduce their debt to $5 billion.
