23 Episodes

It's time for some songs about guys being dudes as Vintown and Sammerz cover two of the greatest songs of all time: "Dirty White Boy" by Foreigner and "Nothin' But a Good Time" by Poison! We start off with "Dirty White Boy". Did you know this song is called "Dirty White Boy"? Seriously, how did that happen? We get into some song meanings (more like wrong meanings), the album cover that made the Bible Belt mad, something called "crypto-racism", and more. The YouTube comments for this one features a sweet old lady named Peggy who really loves this song. Also, a baby named after cocaine? Only in the YouTube comments! The show then makes its way to Poison's 1988 classic, "Nothin' But a Good Time" and talk about the song's working class roots, Poison vs. Motley Crue, the classic music video, hockey, and Yogi Bear. (No picnic baskets were harmed in the making of this section.)You want comments? We got comments! Lots of drug talk, annoying wives, a guy talking management's side in a Poison video, and the dastardly Kirk Cobain is to blame for all of it. Dudes rock and so does this episode. Vintown and Sammerz head to the early 2000s for two of the greatest songs of all time: "Come Clean" by Hilary Duff and "Unwritten" by Natasha Beddingfield! That's right, y'all, it's a Laguna Beach/The Hills theme song episode. We start off with Hilary Duff's theme song for Laguna, "Come Clean". We go back, back to the beginning, to talk about the writing of this song and the music video before engaging in some Lyrics Talk. Plus, Sammerz makes her musical debut. The YouTube comments are all over the place on this one with some really upset Disney adults. Plus, Vince's pitch for the Lifetime Original Movie: Come Clean. The theme song for The Hills and one of the most inspirational songs of a generation is next, "Unwritten" by Natasha Beddingfield. We talk about her writing this song for her brother, her brother's hit song, and their sister who I bet you didn't know they had.The YTC features our Metalhead of the Week, a heated discussion on whether or not Natasha is an Alanis ripoff, alarm clocks, and much more.A fun episode about some trash TV theme songs. To subscribe, you can find us on Apple, Google, Spotify, or whatever podcast app you use by searching “Music Was Better”.You can also head to https://linktr.ee/musicwasbetter for all of our links.Or paste http://feeds.feedburner.com/MusicWasBetter into the “add feed manually” option on your podcast app.Follow us on all forms of social media at @musicwasbetterCredit to SongFacts and Wikipedia for research.
Vintown and Sammerz head back to the early 2000s for two of the greatest songs of all time: "Everywhere" by Michelle Branch and "A Thousand Miles" by Vanessa Carlton"!The show starts off with talk about Michelle Branch's "Everywhere" which she wrote when she was only 15! The only thing we were writing at that age were letters to our parole officers. The YouTube commenters love this song as it takes them back to a simpler time before adulting and social media killed everything. A time when music was about more than ASS. Our second song is "A Thousand Miles" by Vanessa Carlton. You know, that song from White Chicks. There's a lot to talk about here from the celebrity she wrote this about, Stephan Jenkins, MTV censorship, Stephan Jenkins, Whoppa Wit Da Choppa, Stevie Nicks, and more. There are plenty of comments on this one to unpack, including a special segment called "Sam, Are Men Okay?" The answer may surprise you. (It won't.)A banger episode about two banger songs. Jagged Little Pill 25

Jagged Little Pill 25

2022-07-2601:01:06

The Music Was Better crew took a field trip to the Alanis Morissette concert and now they're here to talk about it. The show starts off with "You Oughta Know", that song that everyone thinks they know who it's about. Well, guess what? You don't and we're sick of hearing about it! Why would you even want this song to be about you anyway? Hey, it's me, the abusive dickbag from. Cool, I guess? The comment section is loaded with jagged little pills, including a dad who used this song to teach his son a lesson about how to treat women. That's pretty nice. The only song my parents ever played for me was "Helter Skelter". They said it was about some kind of prophecy their friend Charlie told them about? I don't know, I wasn't really paying much attention. We follow up that angry song with a happier one, "Head Over Feet". Not much facts out there about this one, but the song is a banger. Nobody wants to talk about happy songs anymore. The YouTube comments are filled with the exact kind of people you'd think would be in there. Mostly men who are not okay. Grab a glass of water and swallow down this jagged little pill of an episode.
"Warrior"? "Battlefield"? What is this, some kind of war propaganda? Because that is not okay. Umm, war is bad? Like, seriously...No, silly, it's two of the best songs of the 1980s and Vintown and Sammerz are here to talk all about them. This week we're covering "The Warrior" by Scandal (aka the Patty Smyth band) and "Love is a Battlefield" by the great Pat Benatar! The show starts off with talk about 1984's "The Warrior" by Scandal. We talk about the song's writers, the great Holly Knight and Nick Glider; her writing process, the band's demise shortly after this song hit, stereo jungle child, the classic music video, and Netflix's GLOW.We then dive into the YouTube comments section where this song is great for talent shows, but bad for bodybuilding competitions. It does sound great when driving a Datsun 280ZX though. Plus, a guy who is really into a BatMan/WWF crossover.Pat Benatar's "Love is a Battlefield" is our second song of the show. It is also written by the great Holly Knight along with Mike Chapman. Their songwriting process is covered here as well as their anger at Neil Giraldo's re-arranging of the song. Something they conveniently dropped when the song became a huge hit. Funny how that works. Hashtag capitalism. The music video is another all-timer so you know we're talking about that too.The comment section asks a very important question that we all should be asking ourselves: why world not like when this song come out? why world hard now and no mall? Plus, True Blood talk, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, having thoughts, and an expert in feelings. Good times!Listen up. This might just be one of our best episodes to date.To subscribe, you can find us on Apple, Google, Spotify, or whatever podcast app you use by searching “Music Was Better”.You can also head to https://linktr.ee/musicwasbetter for all of our links.Or paste http://feeds.feedburner.com/MusicWasBetter into the “add feed manually” option on your podcast app.Follow us on all forms of social media at @musicwasbetterCredit to SongFacts and Wikipedia for research.
The Music Was Better Summer Salebration continues with an episode dedicated to one of our favorite summer pastimes: walking! One foot in front of the other, y'all! Specifically, "Walking on Sunshine" (Vintown) and "Walking on Broken Glass" (Sammerz)! We started off with what Vintown calls one of the happiest songs ever, Katrina & The Waves' "Walking on Sunshine". We talk about how the band really wanted to be Velvet Underground, the insane amount of money the song makes, Hurricane Katrina (more like hurricane tortilla), and the numerous covers of the song. The YouTube Comments (YTC) will make you as happy as a dog when it gets to walk, including someone mad about comparisons to Starship's "Built This City", a 14-year-old that wants to be reborn, and a questioning of reality itself. Sammerz' pick is up next, Annie Lennox's 1992 hit, "Walking on Broken Glass". We dig into Diva, if this song is a personal one, Annie's problematic character, and the star studded music video. Hey, is that Dr. House I see? I bet he'd diagnose this segment: very informative! The YTC for this song has some real gems. From Vivian's boring dream to Thomas' woke anthem to Robert's rage against music videos, the comments really are like that shoe that fits just right. So, what are you waiting for? Pop on your walking shoes and take this episode around the block. Your feet (and your ears) will thank you. Vintown and Sammerz are back to talk about two of Third Eye Blind's biggest hits: "Semi-Charmed Life" and "How's It Going To Be"! We did a ton of research for this as we even went and watched the concert live. Anything for our listeners. We start off with "Semi-Charmed Life", the crystal meth anthem that either nobody or everyone knows is about that. We talk about the lyrics, radio censorship, and 2000's The Tigger Movie. The comment section here are a wonderful thing with people who don't understand drugs, people who don't understand English, moms who dgaf about their kids, and the peak of human civilization. There aren't a ton of facts to dig into on "How's It Going To Be" so we instead read some interview quotes about 3EB lead singer, Stephan Jenkins. He seems like a really cool guy!The YTC for "How's It Going To Be" is pretty crazy. (Nice rhyme.) Breakups, divorce, infidelity, and the end of the world. Listen if you like songs that are good or comments that are bad. It wouldn't be summer without a sequel that nobody asked for.Apparently, there are some "California Girls" songs that we forgot about last week so Vintown and Sammerz are coming at you with a sequel to talk all about them. The first one is David Lee Roth's cover of the Beach Boys classic. We talk about his decision to go solo, the song's success in comparison to other Van Halen songs, the Crazy from the Heat EP, and more.We delve into the YouTube comment section of a VHS rip of "California Girls". Things start off okay with your run of the mill stoners and admirers of Dave's fighting skills, but then things take a turn for the worse with Katy Perry haters, racists, and liars? Oh my.Our second song is Gretchen Wilson's "California Girls", a song that neither of us knew existed until earlier this week. Honestly, it was better that way, but we talk about it anyway. There isn't much out there about this one so we even delve into Gretchen's experiences in Plane Hell. The comment section is filled with people who don't quite get that the song isn't that serious and they are mad as hell about it. Plus, an appearance from Gretchen herself?! No way!Get more California Girls than you ever wanted by listening to this episode. To subscribe, you can find us on Apple, Google, Spotify, or whatever podcast app you use by searching “Music Was Better”.You can also head to https://linktr.ee/musicwasbetter for all of our links.Or paste http://feeds.feedburner.com/MusicWasBetter into the “add feed manually” option on your podcast app.Follow us on all forms of social media at @musicwasbetter
California Girls

California Girls

2022-06-2158:41

It's time to kick off the summer and what better way to do that than listening to Vintown and Sammerz talk about some "California Girls." We kick the episode off by going back to 1965 and talking about the original "California Girls" by the Beach Boys. We talk about the song's acid-fueled writing, Brian Wilson's shitty dad, the song's influence on Paul McCartney, and it's ranking among the greatest songs of all time. The comment section is filled with insightful comments and insights like "California girls not hot anymore" and "woke people no like girls no more". We follow that song up with the greatest of all California Girl songs, "California Gurls" by Katy Perry! We have some great quotes from Katy on how she came to write the song and how she ended up choosing Snoop Dogg for a guest spot. Plus, racist radio stations!? The YTC exists just to make us feel old and complain that the lyrics/music video may have been PG-13. Heaven forbid! A fun episode and return to form from a couple of big ol' KatyCats. Stranger Things Soundtrack

Stranger Things Soundtrack

2022-06-0701:10:31

Get ready to kill off Barb with Vintown and Sammerz as they talk about two of the biggest songs from Netflix's Stranger Things: "Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush and "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" by The Clash. The show starts with talk about "Running Up That Hill" which has become the biggest hit in Kate Bush's career over the past week. (And they say Gen Z can't do anything right.) We talk God, interpretive dance, Big Boi from Outkast, and the song's incredible rise over the past two weeks. We then delve into the YouTube comments where people really want you to know they heard this on Stranger Things. Hey, did I mention this song is on the new season of Stranger Things? Because it is. It's on the new season of Stranger Things. However, some have been fans long before the show (Stranger Things) and they really want you to know that too. The Clash's "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" appeared on season one of Stranger Things so we talk about that next. We talk about the show's writing, it's Spanish background singing, Levi's, One Direction, Rugrats, and this new show called Stranger Things. Have you heard of it? It's really good. The show closes out with a delve into the YouTube comments of The Clash's hit where people are really frickin' bent that you discovered this song from a show instead of the old fashioned way: being born a long time ago. These commenters gots to go, y'all. A fun episode about a crazy new show on Netflix. Listen between your next binge session of Stranger Things. Emo Girls

Emo Girls

2022-05-3101:13:56

You may think based on the title of this episode that we're talking about that MachineGOON Kelly song and you would be wrong! After what Willow's dad did, can you imagine? This week Vintown and Sammerz are talking about two mid-2000s emo criers: "MakeDamnSure" by Taking Back Sunday and "Hands Down" by Dashboard Confessional. Not only that, but they have a special guest to help them do it, Music Was Better's official emo correspondent: Ashley! We start off with "MakeDamnSure" as we get into the lyrics, the song's MySpace and AIM legacy, its ranking on the best songs of 2006, and Degrassi: The Next Generation. Craig and Manny shippers, this one's for you. The YouTube comment dive is interesting as always with hero moms, problematic relationships, and the kind of america-style-squeamishness we've come to know and love. Things get slightly more upbeat with "Hands Down". We share some personal stories, talk lyrics, Dashboard's downer reputation, and One Tree Hill. Teen dramas in the 2000s really loved this emo shit, y'all. If you think there are some people in the YTC talking about their past relationships, you would be right! Hey, one of two ain't bad. We celebrate all DC fans here, from a bitch for love to a fat, 39-year-old drunk. The songs may be emo, but this episode is anything but. Top Gun Soundtrack

Top Gun Soundtrack

2022-05-2401:03:39

This week, Vintown and Sammerz feel the need... the need to talk about the Top Gun soundtrack's two biggest hits: "Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins and "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin! We enter the "Danger Zone" first to talk about the song's writing, the multiple bands and artists that were asked to make it before Kenny Loggins, and the artist's inspiration for singing it.The YouTube Comments are their own danger zone with bad war takes, a girl's thoughts of her dad in tighty whities, and someone who is very upset about Rick Rolls in 2022.The show takes a quick detour to talk about Lady Gaga's "Hold My Hand" from the new movie. Do you think these Top Gun fans are happy about a new song being made? Of course, they're not. Music was better on the original Top Gun soundtrack! Our second song is Berlin's "Take My Breath Away", but is it even really by Berlin? Find out that answer as well as details about the steamy scene between Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis, the role this song had in Berlin's break-up, Michael Jordan, and Jessica Simpson. The YTC is filled with some interesting characters on this one with people thinking this song is about a ghost stewardess, creepy reply guys, Hollywood cokeheads, and more.Military propaganda never sounded so good.To subscribe, you can find us on Apple, Google, Spotify, or whatever podcast app you use by searching “Music Was Better”. It's baby time on the podcast this week as Vintown and Sammerz cover "Somebody's Baby" by Jackson Browne and "Baby Hold On" by Eddie Money. We start the show with Jackson Browne's "Somebody's Baby". We talk about the movie it was written for, Lawyers in Love, and the fact that Browne had to go to therapy just to talk about his feelings for the song. The YouTube comments for this one are a romantic place with guys dating out of their league, kisses on a cruise ship, reconnections, and Death Cab for Cutie. Our second song is Eddie Money's first hit, "Baby Hold On". We discuss Mr. Money's inspiration for this song, his terrible early career choice, his real name, Doris Day, and more. The YTC are filled with touching memorials, rap scrap, Goofy hip hop, Kid Rock, and another stalker?! Seriously, guys. Get it together.A fun episode that you should listen to, baby.To subscribe, you can find us on Apple, Google, Spotify, or whatever podcast app you use by searching “Music Was Better”. This week Sammerz and Vince look at two song's from the infamous PRMC "Filthy Fifteen": Cyndi Lauper's hit "She Bop" and Twister Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It". The show starts with discussion about Cyndi Lauper's "She Bop". Hey, do y'all know what this song is really about? It ain't dancing! We talk about that and the gay porn magazine that inspired it, Cyndi's nude recording, and the dystopian music video that looks awfully familiar. (Just look out the window!) The YouTube comment section is an interesting mix of people from all walks of life. Some of them want to go back to the 80s while others just remember it. There are also shots at Drake, inappropriate dads, and Cyndi Lauper's mom swinger question mark."We're Not Gonna Take It" was also listed on the Filthy Fifteen, but Dee Snider was all like "hey, I'm not going to take that" and stood up to the U.S. government. We discuss his testimony and the song's repeated use by politicians. The YTC are really on one with this song as the Gen Xers are really trying to hold onto something, dads are embarrassing their kids at Target, and a fight for the Little Mermaid is on the horizon. Plus, Vince reads the longest comment in show history from a really cool and smart Gen Xer. This is one podcast episode that you're gonna want to take. Miss You vs. I Miss You

Miss You vs. I Miss You

2022-05-0301:02:05

It's an old fashioned song-off as Vintown and Sammerz put The Rolling Stones' "Miss You" up against Blink-182's "I Miss You" in a battle for YouTube comment supremacy. Or they just picked these songs because they have similar titles, whatever. 1978's "Miss You" was the last of the Stones' #1 hits on the Billboard charts. We kick off the show talking about that fact as well as the song's disco influences, Mick Jagger's divorce, John Lennon's claims of theft, and more. We then delve into the YouTube comments where a lot of people want you to know that they are (insert age) and still listening to their favorite band. Would you like to blast this one on the streets of London? Does this song make you think of the Vietnam War? You ever just pop some MDMA and listen to the best tunes from every era? If so, you're a YouTube commenter who just got talked about. Our second song is Blink-182's "I Miss You" and we finally get to the bottom of who the heck these Jack and Sally characters are that everyone keeps talking about. We also get into the song writing process, spin buys, and some hip cats known as the Chainsmokers. (Is it just me or is smoking bad for your health? Just my opinion.) The YTC are a heck of a lot of fun as everyone is sad about dating or their parents. The nostalgia is strong and the kids ain't alright, but they sure do love their "junk 182". We search for the meaning of 'hello there' and much more. You don't want to "miss" this one. You may have heard of a podcast with two people reading YouTube comments from music videos, but a podcast with three people reading YouTube comments from music videos? "That's ridiculousness," Rob Dyrdek might say if asked about this particular topic. He'd be wrong, of course, because this week Vintown and Sammerz are joined by Tyler Maas of the My First Band podcast and Milwaukee Record to discuss Citizen King's late 90's one-hit wonder, "Better Days (And The Bottom Drops Out)" and Green Day's breakthrough hit "Longview"!We kick things off with Milwaukee's own Citizen King as we discuss the history of the band, the song's film legacy, Malcolm in the Middle, and more. The YouTube comment section is always a fun ride and this song's is no different, featuring a deep dive into whether or not this song sounds kinda almost sort of reggae even if it's not really reggae. Our second song is Green Day's ode to depression and masturbating all day: "Longview". Tyler tells us about his band's parody version of the song, we talk about the big influence that the illicit street drug known as "acid" had on the writing, the video director's next level literal use of a monkey in the video, and more.We finish up by digging into the YTC and if you thought there wouldn't be comments about today's youth being a generation of followers or cramped cocks, you'd be wrong. Why would you think that? Use your head, pal. It's the whole point of the show.A fun episode with a fun guest, you're not going to want to miss this one.To subscribe, you can find us on Apple, Google, Spotify, or whatever podcast app you use by searching “Music Was Better”. This week on Music Was Better, Vintown and Sammerz smoke some marijuana cigarettes as they get you ready for 4/20 with songs from The Doobie Brothers and Bob Dylan. The episode starts off with a group of guys who loved smoking weed so much they named their whole band after the stuff: The Doobie Brothers. We take a look into their first major hit, "Listen to the Music". The song has a very stoned history as Tom Johnston was clearly smoking that good stuff when he thought this song would end all wars and bring world peace. If "We Are The World" couldn't do it, then it can't be done. We then delve into the YouTube comment section where one guy doesn't even know what band this is and another has some real "luzzer" parents. Our second song is Bob Dylan's "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" also known as "the everybody must get stoned" song. We learn how, despite the beliefs of stoners worldwide, Dylan swears this is not a drug song. In fact, he's never even written a drug song! Okay, Bob, whatever you say. We definitely believe you. In the comments, someone really wants to know what Muppet Bob Dylan sounds like and another person learns the hard way why you don't allow a heroin addict and ex-convict into your home. It's like a PSA in comment form. A very fun episode from two real potheads all wacked out on bong water. There has never been a girl group quite like the Spice Girls and there has never been an episode of this podcast quite like this one. Vince and Sammerz dive into two of the biggest hits from the Spice Girl's 1996 debut album, Spice: "Say You'll Be There" and "2 Become 1".We start off with the super catchy "Say You'll Be There", the Spice Girls ode to being there for someone. The song had a memorable music video that won awards across the world and it also had some very normal YouTube comments, including comparisons to Sailor Moon, the X-Men, and the Power Rangers. Plus, an important update on what the file size of this mp3 was in comparison to a .wav file! Fascinating stuff, really."2 Become 1" is our second song and hold on a second here... did you know this song is about wearing condoms? Find out more about that when you "put it on". (This podcast is "it" in this scenario. "On" refers to you downloading and playing it. That's what we in the business call a pun, y'all.) We also comb through the YTC where the romantic vibes have never been stronger.Another fun episode about a band everyone loves. In this modern update on Cinderella, Vince and Sammerz discuss two of the best songs from the 1990 Pretty Woman soundtrack: "King of Wishful Thinking" and "It Must Have Been Love".We go over the history of these two songs, including Wendy & Lisa's failure to Go West, the "hilarious" Jimmy Fallon, and Roxette's unhappiness with their placement in the movie. We then head into the comment section where a lot of men are being dumped, Corona makes life sad, and the 90s were better than now.A fun episode about the best multi-platinum selling soundtrack from a movie about a sex worker with a heart of gold ever made.Apologies as we had a few audio issues while recording so the podcast is a bit quieter and doesn't sound as good as other episodes. This will be fixed in the future. To subscribe, you can find us on Apple, Google, Spotify, or whatever podcast app you use by searching “Music Was Better”.Or paste http://feeds.feedburner.com/MusicWasBetter into the “add feed manually” option on your podcast app.Follow us on all forms of social media at @musicwasbetter
This week we take a trip back to a simpler time when nothing bad ever happened and everyone was united in peace and love thanks to the music of the day. The 1960s? You wish, boomer. We're talking about Spring Break 2002!Carson Daly wasn't available so Vince and Sammerz are sitting in to take you through two of the absolute best songs of all time: "What's Luv?" by Fat Joe ft. Ashanti and "Can't Get You Out of My Head" by Kylie Minogue. We learn some interesting facts about the top song from Juwanna Mann and Kylie Minogue's hit single that nearly went to two other artists before her.
