I'm writing this as I listen, I got to the mention of the God Empress and how the Old Ones whisper that she must kill the foreigners. I think GRRM use of Lovecraft is much more nuanced in its xenophobic themes, displaying them in a negative light. Lovecraft's xenophobia & racism really plays strongly into his themes of "other" - and GRRM translate those themes into his Old Ones mythos through displaying how xenophobia negatively impacts humanity, and perhaps how often religions/societal power structures prey on the fear of the other.
