#15, Soldier for Life: SMA Jack L. Tilley interview

In Episode #15 host Dan Elder sits down with Sergeant Major of the Army Jack L. Tilley, USA, Retired and they talk about his new book Soldier for Life: Leader Lessons From The 12th Sergeant Major Of The Army Jack L. Tilley. He explains that the book is more than just an autobiography of Jack L. Tilley, the 12th Sergeant Major of the Army, it is a series of leadership lessons based on selected stories from his more than 35-year career. The last Vietnam veteran to serve in that position from 2000-2004, SMA Tilley was at the Pentagon when terrorists crashed a plane into the nation’s largest "office building" on September 11, 2001. He and his co-author, Dan Elder weave a story beginning with Tilley's enlistment into the United States Army in the summer of 1966, his deployment to Vietnam, his ascension to positions of great responsibility, and describe influential events leading up to his eventual selection and assignment as the 12th Sergeant Major of the Army. Unique to his story are the "Understanding Tilley" segments that close each chapter where Tilley reflects on the chapter events, describes how those events influenced him, as well as explore lessons that the reader can use in their own journey. /topsarge CSM Dan Elder, USA, Retired @dandotelder Subscribe to our podcast on iTunes. Getting Back to Basics, Pt. 1

This episode CSM (Ret.) Dan Elder discusses getting back to the basics and attempts to identify a few foundational techniques company grade noncommissioned officers should master. Key to a professional leader's style are in being grounded in the way that they operate, those basic behaviors that set them apart from others. The way we perform is usually influenced by what we have learned either through formal training or education, by observing and watching those around us, or by other events or influencers. It is by reflecting on some of those techniques that either confirm our own styles, or fill in gaps that currently exist. I make it known that the 8 I chose to talk about in this episode are not in any order, not the most important. It is the starting point for my continued dialog in the coming episodes of what I perceive to be basic leadership skills and techniques, and drive the listener more towards useful, realistic advice.

CSM (Ret.) Joe Gainey entered basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky on June 17, 1975 and retired 25, 2008 as the first Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (SEAC). Came up as a 19D Scout, served every job from gunner, tank commander, drill sergeant, Platoon Sergeant, First Sergeant, and a number successive command sergeant major positions. His toughest job while in the military, and why? The Army is in transition. As budgets are cut and end strength comes down, what concerns does he have about our Army? What is a Sergeant, in his own words. The Specialist Mafia In looking at the curriculum at thee Warrior Leader Course, and how it is different from his initial leadership training. What are some things that may have surprised him during  transition and since he retired from the Army What career advice he had for noncommissioned officers today who think they are faced with an uncertain future The Army's best Scout Competition, called the Gainey Cup. What were his Goals when he stepped in to the role of the first senior advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. What was he not able to accomplish that he wanted to?  Thanks, and we finish the podcast up with his offer to continue to dialog with soldiers and other service members here in the Comments section, so if you have a comment r question for CSM Gainey feel free to post them below and he will attempt  respond back. /topsargeCSM Dan Elder, USA, Retired@dandotelder
