Description

NEON is a different way of sharing historical knowledge. NEON takes a pop culture phenomenon and turns it on its head by revealing lesser known facts, real-life events and history behind your favourite Netflix shows, movies or video games. From how the A-Team took inspiration from Vietnamese history and resistance leaders, to the Aryan purity and Harem breeding programs behind the Handmaid’s Tale. Even some of the most successful video games – Assassins Creed, God of War, and Fortnite – are steeped in history.NEON has already uncovered historical references in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Black Panther, Star Wars, Game of Thrones, The Greatest Showman and the musical, Hamilton.Presented by Jem DuducuProduced by Dan Morelle

This episode originally aired in 2018.How can an unscripted reality show, largely filled with vacuous individuals teach us history? For this one NEON goes way back and talks about the biological reason for finding a mate as opposed to the way strawberries or starfish can do it on their own. Finding a mate defines most of the natural world and a lot of human history too and Love Island shows us this. Add to that the dark under belly of human emotion enjoying mocking those less fortunate and you find out a lot about how the show works and about your own psychology in this episode.Written & Presented by Jem DuducuProduced by Dan MorelleMusic: Kwabs - Wrong or RightBe awesome, support us on PatreonSubscribe to the podcast on iTunes and follow us on Twitter Hosted on Acast. The TV show Lucifer is back on Netflix. One of the few hit movies Keanu Reeves has done that doesn’t involve gunplay is the devils advocate. So it’s the perfect time to talk about the devil. I have been listening to Neon for about a month now, and this has become one of my favorites. Taking popular culture and deconstructing it with historical context has become my favorite way to consume it. In the same way Pennywise uses fear to salt his meat, Neon is my favorite pop culture seasoning.

Didnt appreciate the initial description of Gigers art. It's as if you only looked at one piece and just glanced at it. This movie wouldn't have made it far without his bio mechanical dream like visions. I get deja vu looking through his work, seeing the same imagery in my own dreams.

Lordy, it's been 40 years? I just watched it again for the first time in almost 20 years, happy to share with my children. it still holds up so well. Thanks for the deeper insight on developing the xenomorph. I met Geiger once and was pretty excited that he liked my tattoo!

If only film and television could better covey the depth of analysis that you provide. Now I view all these cheesy, camp 1980s visual media pieces in such a different light.

That was one of the most succinct and enlightening explanations of the Vietnam War I've ever heard! You gave a fair, well rounded description of the regional and global context. Well done.
