It's a long one this week, which feels fitting given the ambitious and expansive theme - why yes, the humble concept album finally falls beneath the NO ENCORE microscope.Julie Hough returns to the studio with five such records for company, and some insight into her latest musical project - PostLast. As ever, there's plenty of news and other such things to discuss, so let's do it to it before it does it to us... ACT ONE: Adam and Dave survive respective individual disasters and plug various wares accordingly. ACT TWO (16:20): Julie explains why she took on yet another new endeavour - check out PostLast's debut EP Pull Me Into The Open Sea at your earliest convenience. *And the nation in question is the good 'ol US of A. As you've no doubt noticed by now, Donald John Trump is the President-elect of the United States of America. Cast aside the numerous valid and alarming reasons for this scenario not to come to pass, for it is indeed a reality once again. If you're feeling uneasy, well, you're not alone. And so NO ENCORE has no real choice but to get a bit political this week as the returning Mark Conroy takes us through his hand-picked audio that best sums up the current state of Stateside affairs right now. There's also a news section that thankfully is considerably less political, and some major personal updates, too. Enjoy? ACT ONE: Dave went to see Max Richter in concert, then later wound up in hospital. The two events are unconnected, he thinks. Meanwhile, Adam joins the fourth estate!ACT TWO (25:25): A busy news section features the passing of legendary producer and notable quotable Quincy Jones, Robert Smith's commitment to the goth lifestyle, Charli XCX's literary triumph, Olivia Rodrigo's dating advice, the rise of entertainment-focused 'cigfluencers', and awkward onstage happenings involving Morrissey and Thom Yorke. This month on Before The ENCORE, Sonic Architect Adam is joined by Toby Hatchett of Hatchett Sound – a designer of bespoke soundsystems featured across the island of Ireland. For those of you unfamiliar, you have Toby to thank for the beautifully handcrafted hi-fi soundsystems in The Big Romance, Fidelity Bar & Studio, Connolly's of Leap, Lost Lane, Hang Dai and Allta to name a few. Toby drops into Adam's studio on the way back to his West Cork workshop from Dublin to discuss his love for audio and creating that special experience for people, his ventures across venues to hi-fi "listening bars", to being tasked with designing an entire bar himself in his most recent output. If you're an audiophile or someone interested in one of the more abstract areas of the industry, this is the episode for you.*If you'd like to get this episode and all NO ENCORE episodes a full 24 hours earlier and ad-free, check us out over on Patreon here.*-Follow Hatchett Sound on InstagramHatchett Sound Website Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Autumnal gloom has set in and the only way is down after Zara Hedderman's all-timer of a Top 5 on the previous episode, right? WRONG! Despite the astounding heights of that aforementioned T5, we're keeping the energy supercharged with the returning Max Zanga, present in-studio as a representative of mysterious rising solo talent Filmore!, who definitely is a different person than Max, honest. The new Filmore! EP is called Idle Death Gamble and it's really very good indeed, and so we talk about that and the overall project at large. Elsewhere, we've got a truly nonsensical Top 5, and a grab-bag of news to get through...And don't forget to hit up patreon.com/noencore, we've got a new Film Club episode dropping this Sunday, all about sweaty and problematic 1993 thriller Falling Down.ACT ONE: The preamble in which we ramble. ACT TWO: Filmore! in conversation. Kinda. ACT THREE (31:54): News! Robert Smith bashes Oasis, Taylor Swiftonomics keeps on churning out the goods, Donald Trump reveals his megamix, Atomic Kitten are still a thing, and some words for the late, great Ka. Roll up, roll up, for one week only, it's NO JONKORE~!In honour of the release of UNTITLED CLOWN FILM PART 2, we've slapped on the greasepaint and the big red noses and other assorted terrifying jester-themed accoutrements. We've also invited the great Jenn Gannon back to the studio so that we can properly celebrate the life and times of one Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, aka... Lady Gaga.Jenn has trained for this one for years without even realising it, given her committed fandom for all things Gaga. And so, she is on hand to deliver the definitive Top 5 for Little Monsters and unimpressed sceptics alike. Meanwhile, there's a jam-packed news section and yet more gushing over Industry, because why not?ACT ONE (11:30): Kris Kristofferson RIP, Oasis learn their lesson, a Last Dinner Party gig goes strangely awry, Chappell Roan takes a break, an unidentified man wastes money on a Taylor Swift guitar, Corey Taylor weighs in on the Dave Grohl debate, Coldplay renege on retirement plans, and Pitchfork get premature - it's the week in music news! Rejoice! We're back in the studio! And we're joined from way out west by the returning Daithí and the debuting Peter Kelly, with both men in town to talk year two of Ireland's most unique and exciting new music and arts festival - Common Threads. The boys also take on a lively news section and list off their five go-to tracks that you simply must throw on when the party starts to fade and the dance floor begins to evacuate. Bangers only, naturally. ACT ONE: We discuss the return of Common Threads and what it’s all about with the two masterminds behind the new festival. ACT TWO (22:20): Marvel prove Dave's point, Elton John endorses Fontaines, Liam Gallagher loses the plot, and Jonker 2 draws ever closer - it's the news. Not like romantic dates, you understand. The ones on your calendar, that's what we mean. And by 'we', we mean returning NO ENCORE original Colm O'Regan, who takes the co-host microphone up this week alongside Dave and Adam. Before we get to this week's hijinks, a reminder that our Patreon is booming with bonus content right now: Adam's latest Album Club is live and features a deep-dive into D'Angelo classic Voodoo, whilst Dave re-teams with Michael Pope for a brand new Film Club this Sunday, all about classic 1990 chiller Misery. Sign up at patreon.com/noencore for all extra audio. As for this episode right here, it breaks down thusly: ACT ONE (6:01): The week in music news takes in some feisty feud action in the world of rock as Jane's Addiction falls apart, Fontaines D.C. and Oasis throw some verbal broadsides at each other, and The Smiths do likewise. Meanwhile, Gene Simmons has his say, Mark Hoppus announces a new project, and music clashes with the beautiful game in doubly odd fashion. ACT TWO (33:14): Top 5 Songs About Dates Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Grab the overpriced popcorn and get ready to suffer through the songs and sounds you wish marketing departments and music supervisors would just leave well enough alone. Dave and Adam are joined this week by Andy McCarroll, host of the excellent Extra Vision podcast and certified movie lover (and hater, should his vitriol prove valid), to navigate the creatively bankrupt world of lazy needle drops that are deployed way, way too often. We've also got a packed news section that takes in everything from surprising infidelity to a highly divisive comeback. Don't forget, you can get this and every new NO ENCORE episode 24 hours early and ad-free, AND additional bonus audio content by signing up to Patreon.com/NOENCORE.ACT ONE (6:05): Taylor Swift endorses Kamala Harris, Dave Grohl has a confession to make, Linkin Park unveil a new singer and weather a storm of controversy in the process, Kendrick Lamar gives Drake a reason to skip next year's Super Bowl, Fyre Festival 2 is GO, the Blur/Oasis feud reaches its natural end point, and Dave and Adam ponder a road trip - it's the news.
