Description

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, has been around for almost two centuries. It has ebbed and fluctuated in such a predictably adaptive manner throughout it's relatively short life in the religious realm. This Church has a very sordid past, which it does a very good job of teaching for itself, whether the history is slanted or not, is yours to decide. Join me on a journey through the history of the LDS Church through the eyes of the people that were actually there. We will learn about the founding members, where the practices came from, where the Book of Mormon (Mormon Bible) came from, and most importantly, we will examine Joseph Smith in every aspect possibly available to us today.

On this episode, we begin with a very brief introduction to the purpose and focus of this podcast. After that, we take some time to discuss the history of Joseph Smith from birth to his early public life. Various details of the Smith family are revealed by neighbors as well as Lucy Mack Smith, Joseph’s mother. We also get a very simplistic understanding of magic and occult traditions followed by the Smith family and Joseph specifically. The episode ends with a short introduction to the host, Bryce Blankenagel, as well as a directory to the backlog of the podcast. This edition of Episode 1 was recorded after the end of the “Road to Carthage” series which marked the end of Joseph Smith’s life. On this episode, we discuss the lovely Emma Hale, who later became Emma Hale Smith when she married Joe, and even later becomes Emma Hale Bidamon, much after Joe dies in his notorious gunfight. We find out what Joe's father in law thinks of Joe, as well as how it relates to his conviction for fraud. There's even an interview on Emma's deathbed, given by her son, Joseph Smith III, to close the episode out.
On this episode, we introduce a new character. South Park fans rejoice, here comes Martin Harris! DUM-DUM-DUM-DUM-DUM!! Or as we come to know him, Not-So-Smarty-Marty. We talk about the fateful day he met Joe and spoke with his entire family about this "Golden Bible" that Joe found. Near the end of the episode, we read the testimony of Abigail Harris (Marty's cousin) and Lucy Harris (Marty's cousin-wife) and find out the kind of man Marty really is.
On this episode, we continue talking about Not-So-Smarty-Marty Harris. There was too much to pack into one episode and keep still keep it interesting so it had to be extended. We learn about the finer details of the investment Marty is about to engage in. Smart business men try to vindicate an investment they are about to jump into and Marty is no exception. He takes a manuscript called the 'Caractors' document, which is currently possessed by The Community of Christ (a break-off LDS faction), to a college professor named 'Not-So-Smarty-Marty's-Super-Study-Smarty-Party-Pooper-Pal Charlie Anthon' to make sure "Reformed Egyptian" is actually a thing.
On this episode, we finally get to analyzing one of the primary translators for Joe, Oliver Cowdery, or as we call him, Cowdung Allover. While little is known about Cowdung, before he starts translating for Joe, we know that he is a founding member of the Church, and an integral part in it's early development. We also talk about how the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthoods were reportedly 'restored' to the Earth, to Joe and Cowdung through a couple of angels in the woods of course, well that's how the church tells it...
Ep6-Polygamy Special

Ep6-Polygamy Special

2014-11-2101:08:132

On this episode, we take a look at the essays recently published, by the church, about polygamy in the early church. There were two essays totaling almost 7000 words with lots of mormon speak and convoluted history. They are clearly worth deconstructing from the naked perspective. This episode only tackles the first of the two essays entitled 'The Manifesto and the end of Plural Marriage'. Next episode we'll tackle the church's claims on Joe's polygamy, when we analyze 'Plural Marriage in Kirtland and Nauvoo'.
On this episode, we continue to examine the recent essays released by the Mormon church on polygamy in early church practices. The first essay told us how the church arduously stopped polygamy, but didn't talk about Joseph Smith very much. Well that's what the second essay was for. The church titled it, "Plural Marriage in Kirtland and Nauvoo". The church finally came out and talked about Joe's 30 to 40 wives and it is a doooozie! This episode is packed with way more information than I initially thought it would be, when I first started researching the 3000 word essay.      On this episode, the next heavy hitters are brought onto the scene. D-Day David Whitmer along with all the men in his family and Hiram Page, the brother in law. We start off learning about David's life before Joe, Emma, and Oliver Cowdery (Cowdung Allover) moved into the little house with the Whitmer family, in Fayette, N.Y. Then I get sidetracked chasing some scripture references in The Doctrine & Covenants (Mormon Canon). Then we find out why the history surrounding Hiram Page is so sparse in reported Mormon history, even though he was Joe's cousin, and one of the 11 witnesses to the plates. Then, I end the episode by telling you why I chose D-Day David for David Whitmer's NaMo name, and describing why I'm doing the show and who will benefit from Patronage.      Thanks for being my first Patron Brian! On this episode, we find out some of the stressors in Joseph Smith's life that lead up to his acquiring the plates. Failing at a new marriage, living in the attic of his parents resource starved house, a father in law that hated him, what was Joe to do? Get the gold plates once and for all, no matter who stands in his way! The family drama is unbearable, the stakes are the survival of the family, and the consequences are dire...   Patreon http://www.patreon.com/user?u=355808 Twitter @NakedMormonism Facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Naked-Mormonism/370003839816311 Website nakedmormonismpodcast.com Patreon Charities:   http://whitefieldseducational.org/http://holdingouthelp.org/  Outro song used with permission
On this episode, we follow Joe and the whole Smith clan leading up to Joe and Emma's move to Harmony, PA. Treason, death threats, and the seeds of an empire are planted in the fertile soil of the burned over district, from which rises, the crippled pheonix that becomes the original Book of Mormon manuscript. Joe is forced to hatch a plan under immense pressure, that has dynamic and far-reaching consequences, with the fate of the plates, relying solely on his Joe's clever wit. Will he crack under the weight of the situation, or will he thrive on the stress, and grind against the opposition with the support of those around him?     Website nakedmormonismpodcast.com     Patreon http://www.patreon.com/user?u=355808     Twitter @NakedMormonism     Facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Naked-Mormonism/370003839816311     Patreon Charities:     http://whitefieldseducational.org/http://holdingouthelp.org/     Outro music used with permission
On this episode, we take a look at the 1826 trial of Joseph Smith for being a disorderly man and an imposter. Raw court notes, biased accounts, and polarizing consequences fill this episode to the brim. On this episode, we discuss exactly what happened in Joseph Smiths 1826 trial. This is a supplement to episode 11, and contains what happened in the aftermath of the trial. A forgery by a Mormon historian, the proof of historical texts, and epic controversies abound. Joe's 'leg bail' is brought to life. On this episode, we talk about all the holes that the treasure digging team dug under the direction of Joe. Joe's upbringing tends to parallel that of Charles Darwin, and we talk about the similarities and differences.   On this episode, Sidney Rigdon is in the crosshairs. He starts as a young boy working on the farm by day, and reading history books by firelight at night. Fast forward a decade or so, and Rigdon is running the biggest Campbellite church in Pittsburgh, PA. The end of the episode dabbles into the pre 1830 connections between Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon.       Website nakedmormonismpodcast.com Twitter @NakedMormonism Facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Naked-Mormonism/370003839816311 Patreon patreon.com/nakedmormonism Outro music used with permission       Links mentioned in the show:       http://www.mormonthink.com/mormonstudiesrigdon.htm#7       http://www.mormonstudies.com/history2.htm   http://www.scn.org/~bp760/saunders.htm
On this episode, we take a look at the Spalding theory as the source text for the Book of Mormon. The Spalding theory has been stuck in the margins of Mormon history for quite some time. Well, we try to rip it out of the margins, and into the spotlight for critical examination, and a fair trial in the court of historical possibilities. There's a lot of information to cover, and a lot of conjecture to answer to, but the evidence seems to be there, to support the claims of the theory.   On this episode, we take a look at the View of the Hebrews (Circa 1823) theory for the authorship of the Book of Mormon. But, the fun doesn't stop there. Where else can we possibly look for possible source material? The KJV Bible? Local maps? Textbooks from the early 19th century? All of the above? Let's just see how original the Big Bad BoM is....       Website nakedmormonismpodcast.com   Twitter @NakedMormonism   Facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Naked-Mormonism/370003839816311   Patreon patreon.com/nakedmormonismOutro music used with permission   Links:   Utlm citation for tons of possible source books http://www.utlm.org/onlineresources/bomindianorigins.htm     BoM vs. New world map http://www.mazeministry.com/mormonism/holley/holleymaps.htm     VoH BoM Isaiah study   http://en.fairmormon.org/Book_of_Mormon/Authorship_theories/View_of_the_Hebrews/Analysis_of_scripture_use
On this episode, we dive back into the world of Joseph Smith to find out how the Book of Mormon came to life. From persecution in Palmyra, to haraguing in Harmony, to flim-flamming in Fayette, Joe moves wherever he can find sanctuary to "translate" in peace. We've covered where the content in the BoM might have come from, but not how it actually came to life. The time period from Joe getting the plates in 1827, up to mid 1829, faces the white hot light of scrutiny in this mother lode of history, and textual analysis.       Website nakedmormonismpodcast.com   Twitter @NakedMormonism   Facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Naked-Mormonism/370003839816311   Patreon patreon.com/nakedmormonismOutro music used with permission
On this episode, we focus strictly on the testimonies of the 3 witnesses, and the 8 witnesses. Should we take them at face value and consider them unimpeachable, or is it worth taking a closer look? The quotes seem pretty open and shut at first glance, but let's really dive in to see what lurks under the surface, and discover the naked truth.       Website nakedmormonismpodcast.comTwitter @NakedMormonismFacebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Naked-Mormonism/370003839816311Patreon patreon.com/nakedmormonismOutro music used with permission       Links:       John H.   On this episode, we try to track down the origin of the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthoods. Their origin is shrouded in mystery, and is reportedly of angellic origins. Did the priesthood come from John the Baptist, Peter, James, and John? Or did the Priesthoods evolve out of necessity for Joe's increasingly higher authority claim? Which conclusion makes more sense?       Website nakedmormonismpodcast.comTwitter @NakedMormonismFacebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Naked-Mormonism/370003839816311Patreon patreon.com/nakedmormonismOutro music used with permission       Links:       Priesthood lineage deconstruction:   https://books.google.com/books?id=fodGAgAAQBAJ&pg=PA203&lpg=PA203&dq=jethro+caleb+elihu+jeremy+gad&source=bl&ots=iVbFXweDe9&sig=lzleoFPQlsiK-gHrFr_3nhNY6y4&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CCQQ6AEwAWoVChMIo8eUhOCPxgIV1BmSCh2dFgJZ#v=onepage&q=jethro%20caleb%20elihu%20jeremy%20gad&f=false
On this episode, we talk about the interrum period from when Joe and Marty signed the contract with E.B. Grandin to publish the Book of Mormon, until the book is published in March 1830. A lot happens, and Joe starts to really gain a reputation for himself, with both dissenters, and supporters of his cause. Joe also gives some revelations about a quick $205,000 that prove to be laughably false.       Website nakedmormonismpodcast.comTwitter @NakedMormonismFacebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Naked-Mormonism/370003839816311Patreon patreon.com/nakedmormonismOutro music used with permission       Links:       Scathing Atheist Episode 126   http://scathingatheist.com/2015/07/16/episode-126-show-notes/       LDS.org "A Snug Log House"   https://www.lds.org/ensign/1985/08/a-snug-log-house?lang=eng       Solomon Chamberlain Autobiography   http://www.boap.org/LDS/Early-Saints/SChamberlain.html

Trent Lytle

Hey Bryce! Trent here from way back in like 2015? A little detail to add here on one of my ancestors. John Lytle was a blacksmith and police officer working in Nauvoo under Bennett. He arrested Chauncey Higbey prior to the Expositor destruction. Later on the eve of the destruction... They noticed chains on the door. Up steps John with his blacksmith hammer. "I have a key that'll fit that door..." He said, smashing the lock. An epic character from the time, check his bio on josephsmithpapers! You can see his name on the arrest warrant and everything!

If you could learn more about Jesus of Nazareth's youth and life up to the bible writings, you would! Everyone would want to know young Jesus! But we can't. The church has revelations about building malls and name changes becoming exmormons themselves, but no history on teenage jesus and how he had to tell the bishop that he did or did not masturbate. Segway to this podcast, Joseph Smith is the mormon modern time Jesus conduit. And you can learn the history of how the Smith family built the book of mormon church and how through Joseph Smith's church, you can die and allegedly go live with god and jesus christ. This podcast does give actual history about the foundation of the mormon religion and it is fun! It is truthful and it is naked! All killer no filler! Worth the time and educational.

As a former temple ordinance worker, it is interesting to listen to this.

Never forget in the early 2000s going through the veil that the old man behind it began to give me the last token using the Five Points of Fellowship language. The temple worker on my side turned white as the clothes he was wearing. He was so sure I didn't know how to respond and could not get the worker behind the veil to use the new wording. I just gave the temple worker a little smile and nodded my head and mouthed "I know. Don't worry." and I finished normally. One of my ward mission leaders wrote his PhD on esoteric Mormonism surrounding the "Calling and Election made sure" and second endowment doctrines and had given me a copy of the thesis. I'd been exposed to all the Masonic connections as a 20 year old years before. But it was funny to go through them at the veil in the old way.

Absolutely amazing account of Mormon history! You're clearly biased, but you cite the sources to back all your claims. As a former member of the LDS church, I am fascinated and cannot stop listening!
