Description

In the spirit of the last stanza of the Black National Anthem, we rise from the past, rooted deeply in the soil of ancestral struggles, to build a home, to claim our space. On Native Land Pod, Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, and Andrew Gillum guide us through the political landscape, wielding insights and unapologetic analysis, unraveling the threads that connect Black Americans and marginalized communities to a place they courageously call home.

In each episode, Angela, Tiffany and Andrew embark on a journey of reflection, taking stock of the news of the week and the country's road to the polls.

Join us each week as we navigate the dance between past and present, weaving a narrative of hope, empowerment, and the unyielding strength that defines the journey to reclaim 'Native Land.' This isn't just news analysis; it's a movement, a conversation, and a testament to the power of those who dare to rebuild and redefine the meaning of home.

This week hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany Cross go to the circus: Trump’s Trials. According to the trial testimony of David Pecker, Donald Trump participated in a “catch and kill” scheme with the National Enquirer. The paid scheme prevented them from publishing negative stories about him during the 2016 election. If only we were all so rich…we still wouldn’t do it!  And at the Supreme Court, oral arguments begin to determine whether former President Trump is immune from criminal prosecution for acts committed while in office.   Protests against the war in Gaza have spread from Google to  Morehouse, NYU, Columbia, Stanford, and Yale University (among others). What is up with framing the student-led, anti-war protests as antisemitic? We unpack it on the pod!    In Politics Are Everywhere, American Airlines has made it more difficult to qualify for their frequent flier points, and Angela and Tiff are NOT happy. Andrew asks, is this first world problems y’all?    And of course we’ll hear from you, our #NLPFam listeners! We are 15 episodes in and this week, hosts Andrew Gillum, Angela Rye, and Tiffany Cross start with the latest in Trump’s many legal woes. The Stormy Daniels "hush money" trial started on Monday. You’re forgiven if you can’t remember what that one is even about– we got you– plus implications for the Trump presidential campaign. Then, there’s ANOTHER case before SCOTUS this week that could have HUGE implications for Trump.    For this week’s deep dive: Minority Rule. Minority rule is when a minority of the population has the majority of the power. Sound familiar? The hosts ask how a shrinking minority of white male conservatives are able to pass laws and policies that most of us don’t actually want. It goes alllll the way back to the beginning, y’all, maybe our democracy isn’t so democratic?    We’re also shedding some light on the importance of Black Maternal Health Week. Black and Brown mothers are about three times as likely to die during childbirth. These are totally preventable deaths, we gotta talk about it!!    As we all know, politics are everywhere, and this week they’re in women’s sports. College basketball star, Caitlin Clark, and some of our faves like Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, were just drafted into the WNBA, and folks are upset about how LITTLE they’ll be paid compared to their NBA counterparts. It is literally a fraction of a percent, y’all…     Then, Native Pod goes green as Tiffany clarifies the politics of cannabis for this upcoming 4/20 weekend. And of course, the hosts respond to your comments and questions. We are 200 days until Election Day 2024!   Welcome home, y'all!   —--------- We want to hear from you! Welcome Home!   New York City Mayor, Eric Adams shared an interesting theory about the migrant crisis during a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club. He said Republicans are targeting Black mayors and sending migrants to their cities to make them look bad. How ‘bout that? Hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany Cross discuss whether there’s any merit to his claim and what else MIGHT be at play.   —--------- We want to hear from you! Welcome Home!   This week, hosts Tiffany Cross, Andrew Gillum, and Angela Rye discuss EBT. “No thanks.” That’s what nearly half the Republican governors in the country are saying to a federal program to feed hungry kids. They’re turning down FREE money to feed kids– and why??    Question: what would a political ad made just for you look like? What issues would it speak to? This week the hosts break down political ads as we brace to be flooded with them this election season.    And how many of you are still rocking with the same crew you’ve been with? Old friends are great, right. The hosts wonder if the Democratic party feels the same. With so many centrist Republicans feeling alienated by MAGA and Trump, might the Dems try to attract the “politically homeless” Republicans.    Stick around to the end of the episode for Politics Are Everywhere, when the hosts discuss rap beef—a part of hip hop since its origin!! After J. Cole and Kendrick exchanged diss tracks, J. Cole said: “no disrespect.”     Ohhh…okay.    Check out ESPN’s The Crossover; Angela is an Executive Producer and the special was nominated for three Sports Emmys!!    —--------- We want to hear from you! Welcome home!    On this MiniPod hosts Andrew Gillum, Tiffany Cross, and Angela Rye take us to Tulsa, Oklahoma. On Tuesday, lawyers for the two remaining survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre appealed to the state’s Supreme Court to allow a reparations case to move forward. The two survivors, Mother Randle and Mother Fletscher, would like their day in court, and a chance to seek justice for the horrific crimes committed against them and their community– with involvement from Tulsa authorities, by the way. What is Project 2025?

What is Project 2025?

2024-04-0401:12:36

Welcome home!    This week hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany Cross turn their gaze towards Tennessee, where state lawmakers voted to fire the entire board of Tennessee State University last week. Does this have anything to do with the $2 billion dollars the state owes TSU, the state’s only publicly funded HBCU?! Probably.    Staying in the south, Crystal Mason recently ended her years-long battle with the Texas courts, who sentenced her to prison for FIVE YEARS just for trying to vote. In 2016, she cast a provisional ballot not knowing that it was illegal for her to do so since she was technically still under state supervision. Her life has been consumed by BS (excuse the language) legal battles ever since.    Y’all have been asking and now our hosts answer– what’s up with Project 2025? On this week’s deep dive, we dig into the woke-obsessed 900+ page document that outlines the republican plan to literally remake the federal government in their image. If Trump wins, the plan calls for him to replace tens of thousands of public employees in the FBI, Department of Justice, and more with conservative loyalists. They’re gearing up for war, y’all!   Stick around for Politics Are Everywhere, where the hosts discuss Washington State’s new Strippers’ Bill of Rights.   And as always, we’ll hear from you. Keep those questions and comments coming!!    —--------- We want to hear from you! Welcome home!  On this MiniPod, hosts Andrew Gillum, Angela Rye, and Tiffany Cross take a look at a big change on Instagram. There’s a new default setting in Instagram that limits the amount of “political content” that you see in your feed. That includes posts from Native Land Pod! Instagram’s parent company, Meta, claims it’s to stop users from seeing misinformation. But is that possible without also blocking us from important and educational content?  You can turn off this new default setting by following the instructions in this tutorial video.  —--------- We want to hear from you! Welcome home!  Hosts Andrew Gillum, Tiffany Cross, and Angela Rye kick off this week’s episode with a look at Trump’s many many many federal and state charges (88 to be exact). You might’ve heard that Trump got out of paying a whole bunch of money to New York state this week— nearly half a billion dollars— the penalty for committing fraud by over-valuing his properties. He will still have to pay a $175 million bond, and New York State’s Attorney General Letitia James may seize his properties if he doesn’t cough it up.  From New York, the hosts take us across the country to cover the Republican anti-DEI offensive. More than half of states have introduced bills to limit diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. The hosts take a look at these bills and the arguments folks are making for and against them. Why do some Black folks side with Republicans on this issue? What does it mean to be “equitable” and “inclusive,” anyway?  Finally, it’s time to talk about Haiti. The situation there continues to escalate; the UN says that gangs have taken control of most of the capital city, Port-Au-Prince. The situation is complex and impossible to understand without knowing some of Haiti’s rich history of emancipation and struggle.  Finally, don’t forget to check out the biopic about Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman to run for president, out now on Netflix. You’ll hear about it in this week’s call to action!  —--------- We want to hear from you! Welcome home!  This week, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Tiffany Cross start the show with a look at Trump’s recent “bloodbath” debacle.  Trump’s violent language on the campaign trail is nothing new, so how concerned should we be about political violence? What are the lasting effects of promoting violence as a political strategy? Is it “terrorism”??  Plus, you remember the First Step Act, that bipartisan criminal justice reform bill passed by the 115th Congress and signed into law by Donald Trump in 2018 that Republicans were patting themselves on the back for? You might have missed it in the mainstream news, but the ultra conservative Supreme Court just struck down a key part of the bill and the Justice who drafted the majority opinion MIGHT surprise you! The hosts dig into the SCOTUS ruling for this week’s deep dive.  Are you HIGH? Or feeling low because Mary Jane is still a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substance ACT? Well, MVP Harris has some thoughts on it. If you’re in Baltimore, support Marilyn Mosby by showing up to her rally. It’s at noon this Saturday March 23rd at the Druid Hill YMCA and this is just... the first step.  And since we know so many of you listen just for Tiffany’s sports analysis, she’ll be back to break down March Madness in this week’s Politics Are Everywhere. Welcome home y'all!  Many of us don’t fit neatly into the boxes “Democrat” or “Republican”…so are you independent?! On this MiniPod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum and Tiffany Cross discuss the nuance of third parties in the American Democratic system  Could a strong third party empower voters? TikTok Getting Banned?!

TikTok Getting Banned?!

2024-03-1401:27:37

Welcome home y’all!  This week, hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross and Andrew Gillum cover the TikTok ban, which overwhelmingly passed the House and awaits Senate action—why is it happening? The ACLU says the legislation violates the first amendment, Donald Trump is wavering, even though he was actually the first high ranking official to propose a ban on TikTok. Joe Biden said he’d sign the bill into law. The hosts offer their takes.  In election politics, no surprises— Trump and Biden officially clinched the nomination. The hosts do a deep dive into what a Trump versus a Biden presidency would look like by examining each of their proposed budgets as President Biden just dropped his off to Congress on Tuesday!  There’s also an update on Trump’s racketeering case in Georgia. That case could be affected by an impending Supreme Court Case that will decide if Trump enjoys broad “presidential” immunity for crimes committed while he was president. More on that in this and a later episode…  Finally, the hosts will answer your questions, and give an update on the former State’s Attorney, Marilyn Mosby. You can find her Go Fund Me page by clicking here, and we’ll update this description with info on the March 23rd rally later this week. Welcome home y’all!    A spot for Nikki Haley voters with Biden? With Haley’s drop out of the presidential race, we look ahead at what’s to come for the two leading candidates following Super Tuesday.    And, President Biden is set to deliver his State of the Union address. We'll analyze what key messages we hope to hear and how they might impact his presidential bid.    In state politics, we spend a little time unpacking the rhetoric of North Carolina’s republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson and the hosts differing views on how or whether to keep Trump supporters in the fold.   Plus, we'll delve deep into the controversy surrounding Marilyn Mosby, the Baltimore City State’s Attorney who prosecuted officers in the Freddie Gray case and implemented a robust reform agenda that law enforcement is still mad about.. Welcome home y’all! On this week’s episode, no big surprises in the Michigan primary election, but both parties are showing significant signs of dissent. The hosts examine what the results mean for the winners of the primary (Trump and Biden) as they look ahead to super Tuesday.  DEI remains under attack. This week the Alabama senate passes a bill that outlaws funding for state-run DEI initiatives. Will black athletes roll tide or bounce? One mayor is on the frontlines of this issue.  Angela delivers an update on the Fani Willis case and the hosts have a spirited debate on the boundaries of professional decorum and ethical obligations in the Fani Willis hearing.  And in Politics Are Everywhere– we got beef with Wendy’s. Wendy’s is planning to institute “surge” pricing like Uber and Lyft, a move that would disproportionately affect black and brown communities.  Thank you for submitting State Of The Union questions!! Meanwhile, Trump launches a sneaker brand to help him pay off the $355 million dollars that he owes New York state. Plus, the hosts debate why some black voters are leaning towards Trump.  With the Michigan primary on the horizon, we want to know– who y’all got Michigan?? Rashida Tlaib calls for Michigan democrats not to vote for Biden. In Georgia, District Attorney Fani Willis answers questions about her relationship with her lead prosecutor in a closely followed election fraud case involving Trump and his allies. The romantic liaison could put the case in jeopardy, but new evidence favors Willis. In Politics Are Everywhere– we have to talk about Beyoncé’s historic new country single, Texas Hold ‘Em.
