Description

In the spirit of the last stanza of the Black National Anthem, we rise from the past, rooted deeply in the soil of ancestral struggles, to build a home, to claim our space. On Native Land Pod, Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, Bakari Sellers, and Andrew Gillum guide us through the political landscape, wielding insights and unapologetic analysis, unraveling the threads that connect Black Americans and marginalized communities to a place they courageously call home.

In each episode, Angela, Tiffany, Bakari, and Andrew embark on a journey of reflection, taking stock of the news of the week and the country's road to the polls.

Join us each week as we navigate the dance between past and present, weaving a narrative of hope, empowerment, and the unyielding strength that defines the journey to reclaim 'Native Land.' This isn't just news analysis; it's a movement, a conversation, and a testament to the power of those who dare to rebuild and redefine the meaning of home.

On this week’s MiniPod of Native Land Pod, it’s a boys takeover. Andrew Gillum and Bakari Sellers discuss the recent spate of violence during homecoming weekend at our HBCUs.    There has been some hysterical reporting about violence around the Howard University and Lincoln University campuses. Surely, violence surrounding large gatherings at our HBCUs is a cause for concern, and we’ll talk about it. Also, there’s a (false) media trope about violence at HBCUs that media outlets are playing into, and our hosts are going to correct the record.    And of course we’ll hear from you! On episode 103 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are TOGETHER at a studio in Houston, Texas.    Starting on November 1st, SNAP (food stamps) benefits will reportedly run out of funding, affecting more than 40 million Americans, or about 10% of the country. This despite the fact that the federal government could easily appropriate funds to continue the SNAP program through November. This is a result of the federal government shutdown which will soon be the longest shutdown in U.S. history.    This shutdown is doing damage to American’s faith in our own government. With Democrats poised to take control of the House in 2026, what responsibility will they have to restore the trust deficit?    And in the meantime, wtf do WE do?!? Our hosts discuss how to stand in the gap and support our communities even when the government won’t.    If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod.    We are 369 days away from the midterm elections. On this special SoloPod, Angela Rye and attorney A.B. Burns-Tucker (A.K.A. IAMLEGALLYHYPE) tackle California’s proposition 50, CA reparations measures, and answer YOUR questions.    This episode originally aired as an Instagram live stream on 10-23-25.    Proposition 50 seeks to redraw California’s electoral maps to give Democrats as many as 8 more seats in the U.S. Congress. It’s the only measure on the ballot for CA voters this November.    Recently, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a reparations bill to create a Bureau for Descendents of American Slavery in California. There were five other reparations bills put before the governor by the CA legislature that he vetoed. Angela criticized him for those vetoes and caught some flack online for it , she will respond to the haters.    If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/   Welcome home y’all!    —--------- We want to hear from you! The Perfect Neighbor debuted this month as the #1 film on Netflix, bringing attention to Stand Your Ground laws through the story of Ajike “AJ” Owens. AJ was killed in 2023 by her neighbor Susan Lorincz, a woman known throughout the neighborhood as “The Karen." This documentary, told through police bodycam footage of the confrontations leading up to the horrific murder, is part of a movement for social change.    On this MiniPod, our hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, and Andrew Gillum speak with the mother of Ajike Owens, Pamela Dias, and executive producer of the film, Takema Robinson. In honor of Ajike’s legacy, these two co-founded the Standing In The Gap Fund with a vision to transform grief into action and seek justice for those impacted by racial violence.    Florida’s first-in-the-nation Stand Your Ground law played a key role in Ajike’s murder. Her killer researched the law BEFORE shooting Ajike and using it as her legal defense. Ajike, Takema, and SO many others are seeking to overturn the law that’s disproportionately used to justify murdering members of the Black community.    If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/   Welcome home y’all! —--------- We want to hear from you! On episode 102 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are joined by Charlamagne Tha God, host of The Breakfast Club, to talk about the controversy NLP stirred up with our “anti-intellectualism” episode last week. Our hosts also cover Trump’s grifting, a call for a general strike, and an update on threats to the Voting Rights Act.    Trump is seeking $230M in damages from his own Justice Department for investigations into him, the 2016 Russia-election-interference investigation and the investigation into his handling of classified documents. Is it likely that he’ll actually get this money?     The mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson, has called for a general strike to push back against the actions of the Trump administration. He is the highest ranking public official to do so. We’ll hear his call to action and ask: what does it realistically look like for us to withhold our labor en masse? Are we ready for that??    Charlamagne Tha God has some criticism for our NLP hosts regarding the segment we did on Marc Lamont Hill, Queenzflip, and the Joe Budden Podcast last week. Charlamagne’s criticism mirrors many of the comments we’ve received. Our hosts respond to the critiques!    A quick explainer on the threats to the Voting Rights Act, please check out the special episode we did last week…   If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod.    We are 376 days away from the midterm elections. Native Land Pod hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum are LIVE at CultureCon 2025 for a special conversation about where they see politics intersecting with creative spaces. PLUS questions from the audience.    CultureCon started in 2016 as a small gathering of Black creatives in Imani Ellis NYC apartment. Our MiniPod this week is inspired by one of your questions. Should we attend the No Kings protest? How do we maximize our political power through other methods besides voting?    We’ll hear some personal testimony from Andrew about what it means to folks like Letitia James and Lisa Cook, and all the folks being unjustly targeted by the Trump administration, about what it means to see folks protesting the same system that’s grinding them down.    If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/   Welcome home y’all!    —--------- We want to hear from you! On episode 101 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers talk about Ignorance.    Some Ignorant young Republican leaders had their group chat leaked, as reported in a recent Politico article. You are NOT going to believe what these 20 and 30-something conservatives in positions of power said when they thought they were in private. Their racist and violent rhetoric illuminates how young conservatives think and how these words become policy, see below–   LA county has declared a state of emergency due to the ICE raids taking place there. The Trump administration is nabbing up green card holders and American citizens as they arbitrarily arrest anyone who LOOKS LIKE an immigrant (AKA brown)--a prime example of how racist words become policy.    There’s a viral clip going around of Marc Lamont Hill getting yelled at for using “big words” on the Joe Budden podcast. Is this a sign of a broader anti-intellectual strain in our culture? Or do we need to keep an open mind toward folks who slander “intellectual” talk?    California Governor Gavin Newsom rejected 5 reparations bills meant to provide the Black community with restorative justice. We’re showing the receipts and holding this supposedly progressive governor to account. He did approve 1 reparations-related bill…    Politico Article - Racist Group Chats: https://www.politico.com/news/2025/10/14/private-chat-among-young-gop-club-members-00592146   If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod.    We are 383 days away from the midterm elections. On this special episode of Native Land Pod, host Angela Rye is joined by attorney for the Legal Defense Fund, Janai Nelson. Ms. Nelson joins us just after leaving the Supreme Court, where she argued a case which could have radical implications for the Voting Rights Act and redistricting across the country: Louisiana v. Callais.    In 2024, Louisiana was found to be in violation of the VRA and was forced to redraw their congressional map. The original map created only one majority Black district out of six total districts, in a state where roughly 1/3rd of the population is Black. Ms. Nelson and the Legal Defense Fund argued in favor of the new map, which created two majority Black districts, in the Supreme Court back in March of 2025.    The highest court has called them back to hear arguments AGAIN, a move rarely taken, except for with the most consequential of cases (Roe v. Wade, Brown v. Board, etc.). If Louisiana’s original map is allowed to stand, with only one majority Black district, it would effectively gut the Voting Rights Act, and lead to a reduction in representation for Black people across the country.    Read more: https://www.naacpldf.org/case-issue/louisiana-v-callais-faq/   https://www.justice.gov/crt/section-2-voting-rights-act   Watch Oral Arguments: https://www.c-span.org/program/public-affairs-event/supreme-court-hears-case-on-racial-gerrymandering-voting-rights/664542   Want to ask Angela a question? On this week’s SoloPod, Angela Rye breaks down the charges against New York’s Attorney General Letitia “Tish” James, and connects them to a larger pattern of powerful Black women being unjustly prosecuted.    SPEAKING OF DISRESPECT TO BLACK WOMEN, our NLP hosts called out Stephen A Smith last week for his comments disparaging Congresswomen Jasmine Crocket over her lack of “civility.” Stephen accused his critics, including our hosts, of attacking him without substance. Sir, these attacks have substance, and we are happy to explain.    The Trump Justice Department has charged Letitia James with mortgage fraud, the same charge they’ve brought against Lisa Cook and other “enemies” of Trump. As New York AG, Letitia James successfully prosecuted the Trump family for financial crimes back in 2022 by showing proof that Trump over-inflated his net worth for tax and insurance benefits.    Want to ask Angela a question? We are celebrating episode 100 of Native Land Pod!! With our hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, AND Bakari Sellers.    Bakari joins as our fourth host of Native Land Pod! Like Angela, Bakari is the child of an activist, and similar to Andrew, he made history when he became the youngest South Carolina state rep back in 2006 (beating a 26 year incumbent). He brings his sharp wit, cutting political commentary, and sibling-like sass. Welcome Bakari!!    Native Land Pod has launched a Substack for our 100th episode! In Chicago, they rappelled from Black Hawk helicopters into an multi-family building, going apartment to apartment and rounding up men, women, and children–including American citizens (later released).    We are seeing Charlie Kirk-wannabes and Black organizations bearing white messages invade our HBCUs. How do we handle trolls and white supremacists coming on our campuses?    Former LSU football star Kyren Lacy tragically took his own life last April after being charged with negligent manslaughter for causing a car crash. On episode 99 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum talk shutdowns, Bad Bunny at the super bowl, and a new directive from Trump to go after “domestic terrorists.”   Republicans and Democrats are once again at an impasse on the budget, meaning the federal government is officially shut down. Democrats are making a stand over health care. The Trump administration is threatening to use the shutdown to enact more cuts and layoffs. Our hosts outline what’s at risk and predict what comes next.    Puerto Rican super star Bad Bunny has been tapped to perform at this year’s Super Bowl halftime show amidst a direct assault on the Hispanic community by ICE and the federal government. It recalls Kendrick Lamar’s politically charged performance last year. Do these performances have an impact, and if so, what is it?    Why isn’t the media covering NSPM-7? In what could be the biggest change to national security since the Patriot Act, President Trump has directed the FBI, the IRS, and other federal agencies to go after domestic “terrorists.” Non-profits that support progressive causes and shows like ours could now face terrorism charges for “fomenting political violence.” This is probably the biggest underreported story of the year!   Read NSPM-7: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/09/countering-domestic-terrorism-and-organized-political-violence/   Read the ANTIFA Terrorism Designation: https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/09/designating-antifa-as-a-domestic-terrorist-organization/   Check out the Prison Journalism Project: https://prisonjournalismproject.org/   And of course we’ll hear from you! Yet again we find ourselves on the verge of a Federal government shut down. The Democrats are staging a fight over expiring health care subsidies that could boost health care premiums for tens of millions of Americans. Trump and Republicans are refusing to negotiate.    After a last-minute meeting between President Trump, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and their Republican counterparts, the shutdown looks all but certain.    Angela Rye gets an update on the situation from Rep. Maxine Waters and Rep. Jasmine Crockett. With a special appearance from the founder of Win with Black Women: Jotaka Eaddy. On episode 98 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum address the selective application of the first amendment, the right to free speech.    Our first guest, Karen Attiah, was (until recently) an op-ed writer for the Washington Post. She was fired last week after writing a post on social media that said she wasn’t going to mourn Charlie Kirk, a white man who promoted violence and vitriol. She did not celebrate his death or condone political violence. The Washington Post fired her for having a hot take, which is LITERALLY HER JOB as an opinion writer.    Our second guest is a White House Correspondent for AURN (American Urban Radio Networks), Ebony McMorris. In a viral clip, Trump refused to answer a question from Ebony during a press Q&A, and repeatedly insisted that she was “obnoxious,” reminiscent of previous incidents with Black female reporters like Yamish Alcindor, who seem to trigger the president simply by existing. Is this what the first amendment looks like for Black women?    One of you submitted a question about Jimmy Kimmel which ties nicely into our theme today, and tied to all of it is the sanctification of the life of racist rightwing commentator, Charlie Kirk. There was a House Resolution honoring Kirk that passed this week which many Democratic lawmakers voted “yes” on, including those in deep blue districts. Representative Jasmine Crockett noted that there were only two white Democratic representatives who voted “no.” Is this the return of the Dixiecrats?        Native Land Pod is LIVE this Saturday September 28th at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundations Annual Legislative Conference. please do better in the explanation of gerrymandering. none of your guests have explained in a way that the ordinary person could understand!

OMG! I'm screaming from Atlanta! I LOVE this podcast! I just paused my utube of this episode to comment. You are ALL brilliant! I am laughing at AR's VP pick, although I, too, love him! however, I agree 💯 with AG on his choice. The Pennsylvania pick. Strong contender for me. Off topic, Tiffany, I love your podcast! It's a great concept! Keep informing us on both platforms. Rosella (Atlanta)

I am so happy that this podcast exists. Thank you for sharing the knowledge that is needed. I love that you also hold both parties accountable. Andrew, I love how you are so bold to publicly say, I'm human! I am a forever listener of you all individually and as a collaboration.

I did not realize how I missed your voices. I was 4 minutes into the podcast when I knew that I had a new favorite one. Your transparency was jarring and appreciated. I can't wait for the next episode. Finally, I am really going to need you all to get through 2024 with my sanity intact. PEACE.
