Like we always do at this time of year, we present an important, alternative look at Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy, examining how the civil rights icon was so much more than simply the “I Have a Dream” soundbite, which has become known as the cornerstone of his public perception. Along with Pastor Roger C. Williams of the First Baptist Church of Glen Cove, NY, Larry Hamm, of the People's Organization for Progress, Hip Hop artist Silent Knight, and King’s own words, listeners learn of MLK’s Poor People’s Campaign, which he believed would be his true legacy. More than likely, it was this that got him killed. News Beat is produced in association with Manny Faces Media. Amnesty International, the largest human rights organization on the planet, has released a sweeping, scathing, landmark report concluding that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Titled ‘You Feel Like You Are Subhuman,’ the nearly 300-page investigation bases its damning findings on the international stipulations of the Genocide Convention, hundreds of interviews with witnesses and survivors, and forensic analysis of Israel’s offensive in the wake of the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas. Joining us from Ramallah in the Occupied West Bank is Budour Hassan, international researcher on Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories at Amnesty International, who provides critical context and insights regarding the report and the unimaginable, ongoing suffering of the Palestinian people. As Gaza smolders, Lebanon burns, and the world rightfully continues to demand Hamas release the remaining hostages it abducted during its attack on October 7th 2023, we illuminate the underreported plight of Palestinians held and abused throughout what one human rights group dubs Israel’s ‘network of torture camps,’ where men, women, and children—yes, children—are imprisoned, beaten, sodomized, raped, and/or murdered. Inmates undergo amputations due to prolonged shackling, genital electrocutions, waterboarding, and other sinister forms of torment. Many are held without charges or trials, some indefinitely. The United Nations and other human rights groups have condemned these crimes, and whistleblowers have been leaking more and more, yet these detention facilities and those imprisoned haven’t garnered much international outcry, if any. Milena Ansari of Human Rights Watch and Jenna Abuhasna of Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association—who spoke with us from Jerusalem and Ramallah, respectively—discuss the deplorable conditions, controversial policies, and horrific abuses occurring at these facilities, along with the quest for accountability, and freedom. “I'll answer that part first, that’s the easy one,” explains John Kiriakou, the former CIA intelligence officer who served 30 months in federal prison for exposing the agency’s torture program to the world, when asked whether he’d do it all again despite the personal and professional fallout from his disclosure. Those are just some of the many profound insights he shared with us during a recent, wide-ranging conversation encompassing everything from the significance of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s recent plea deal with U.S. authorities to the lack of affirmative defense under the WWI-era Espionage Act to his thoughts on Israel’s indefinite detention and alleged torture of Palestinians, the personal toll of truth-telling, ongoing ‘War on Terror,’ and much more. The occupied, blockaded, walled territories of Palestine have served as an incubator for some of Israel’s deadliest and most intrusive weapons and surveillance systems. Once tested and perfected on the captive population, they’ve been sold to some of the most oppressive, murderous autocracies—and democracies—in the world. These are some of the many revelations exposed in the latest book by acclaimed journalist, filmmaker, and author Antony Loewenstein: “The Palestine Laboratory: How Israel Exports the Technology of Occupation around the World.”A guest on previous episodes ”Disaster Capitalism” and “Grifter’s Paradise,” Loewenstein joins us once again to discuss the ascent of Israel into one of the largest arms dealers on the planet, its insanely disturbing testing and marketing techniques, the authoritarian regimes that have unleashed these weapons and technologies to crush dissenters and massacre countless people, 9/11’s lasting impact on all this, his warning for the future, and much more. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued provisional orders in response to South Africa’s case charging Israel with committing genocide against Palestinians, ruling that Israel must refrain from genocidal acts, punish public incitement of genocide, facilitate humanitarian aid, and more. Our previous guest, international human rights attorney Francis Boyle, describes the legally binding mandates as a monumental win to help stop the massacres and civilian carnage, while MSM and others dismiss their weight since they don’t explicitly call for a “ceasefire.” What do these historic directives actually mean? What happens next? And will they stop the daily atrocities leveled against the innocent Palestinian people?!? We break it all down, sharing critical context and explaining just what’s at stake, as the death toll in Gaza continues to mount. News Beat is produced in association with Manny Faces Media. We follow up our preview episode about South Africa's genocide case against Israel with a breakdown of the two-day hearing at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and discuss President Biden's bombing of Yemen -- seriously escalating the crisis in the Middle East. The joint US-UK operation came the same day, Jan. 11, 2014, when South Africa laid out its case against Israel for its brutal war in Gaza, which has killed more than 23,000 Palestinians, the majority women and children. Citing the Genocide Convention, South Africa accused Israel of committing four genocidal acts since Hamas' horrific attacks on Oct. 7. “Nowhere and nobody is safe," one of the members of South Africa's contingent declared. South Africa is seeking a provisional measure to prevent further harm to Palestinians. The court said it would make its ruling in a public setting at a future date.  News Beat is an award-winning social justice podcast that often melds music and journalism to raise awareness about important issues. South Africa this week will go before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at the Hague and lay out its case of genocide against Israel for its brutal war against Palestinians. With more than 23,000 dead (nearly two-thirds of whom are women and children), countless others injured or maimed, and so many with mental scars that will never heal, this genocide case could prove hugely consequential—and historic. In this episode, Francis Boyle, a human rights attorney and the first lawyer to win orders under the Genocide Convention of 1948 from the ICJ, breaks down the complaint and explains why he believes South Africa will win. A victory in this case would also mean the US is complicit in genocide—striking a huge blow to the Biden administration and the veneer that the US is a beacon of human rights. Democrats have long been accused of abandoning voters. Disillusionment with the Dems is particularly acute in the Rust Belt, where the long-cracking union wall has collapsed. In this episode, we interview Lainey Newman, the co-author of the book “Rust Belt Union Blues: Why Working-Class Voters Are Turning Away from the Democratic Party." The book, and Lainey's interview, is an insightful and important look into the collapse of once powerful unions and how historically Democratic voters shifted their allegiance to the Republican Party. It also helps, finally, better understand the outcome of the 2016 presidential race. For example, after reading the book and speaking with Newman, one of the people behind News Beat is more convinced than ever that Bernie Sanders would've defeated Donald Trump in 2016. Amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, we delve into an important and oft-ignored question: Have we truly learned from the mistakes and abuses of the 'war on terror'? What began as a mission against al Qaeda evolved into something far more extensive, lethal, and consequential. From torture and rendition to indefinite detentions and extrajudicial killings, the U.S. government, specifically the executive branch, stretched its powers beyond imagination. Join us as we explore whether the post-9/11 war on terror paved the way for a wider, even more chilling conflict. This episode features remarkable insights from Mark Fallon, a former DoD official, and Jenni Walkup-Jayes, the author of an important paper on the history of terrorism and how to combat it. Consumers -- YOU -- are getting screwed! That’s right—Amazon and Google, the tech giants that have become so omnipresent in our lives, are facing accusations that the monopolies they’ve built in their respective industries are crushing consumers, and in Amazon’s case, the small businesses that are forced to comply with the retail giant’s rules in order to survive. The ongoing Google trial over its search engine’s dominance and the Federal Trade Commission’s lawsuit against Amazon reveal how our lives—and wallets—are effectively controlled by two of the most massive companies in the world. David Dayen, the executive editor of The American Prospect, helps us better understand what these cases are about—and crucially, how they impact all of us. With the climate clock mercilessly ticking down, communities are turning to the complex web of court systems throughout the U.S. as a tool to hold major fossil fuel companies accountable for their role in the worsening climate crisis. Across the country, states and municipalities are suing the likes of ExxonMobil, Shell, BP and other polluters for climate-related damages, fraud, deceiving the public, and other alleged misdeeds. In this episode, Rashed and Chris speak to renowned journalist, activist, and author Norman Solomon, whose most recent book “War Made Invisible: How America Hides the Human Toll of Its Military Machine” breaks down the grossly underreported aspects of U.S.-led post-9/11 global wars and analyzes the mechanics perpetuating them. From the media’s vital role in the U.S. war-making machine to these conflicts’ ever-growing civilian death tolls, the book chronicles and dissects the jingoistic propaganda regurgitated by stenographic mainstream media outlets to facilitate these forever wars, revealing their lethal hypocrisy and direct roles in all the carnage. It is a must-read for anyone interested in learning the bloody truth behind such neverending massacres. "If our democracy is to survive, the empire must be dismantled.” That’s what Dr. Cornel West told us in an exclusive, wide-ranging interview with News Beat, in which he talked about dismantling systems of oppression, uplifting the poor and working class, ending America’s military industrial complex, and abolishing poverty, homelessness, and prisons. West, who is vying for the Green Party nomination for U.S. President, said his third-party bid is also about putting an end to the corporate duopoly and dismissed claims that a candidate outside of the two-party system can’t win. He also said he’s entering the race not just to introduce new ideas but to fight for marginalized people, vowing to take on anyone who is hostile to the struggle of working people and those on the front-line of disastrous conflicts. Before he pulled out a historic mayoral victory in April, Brandon Johnson was a virtual unknown in Chicago’s political scene. At the community level, however, Johnson’s star was on the rise. An unabashed progressive and union champion, Johnson played a critical role in the 2012 Chicago teachers’ strike—a seemingly radicalizing experience for him and many other left-leaning Chicagoans. In this episode, we examine the grassroots, union-led movement that propelled Johnson to victory and how the 2012 strike laid the groundwork for his inspiring campaign.  Visit our New Beat Substack to learn more about this episode https://newsbeat.substack.com/p/building-a-movement-chicagos-grassroots News Beat is produced in association with Manny Faces Media. In this episode, we feature insights from writer and activist Cory Doctorow, who along with Rebecca Giblin, a professor at Melbourne Law School, co-authored the book ‘Chokepoint Capitalism: How Big Tech and Big Content Captured Creative Labor Markets and How We’ll Win Them Back.’ It's a story about the stranglehold megacorporations have on their respective industries. For artists and creators, it means they're receiving fewer and fewer percentages of overall profits, despite their work enriching our corporate overlords.  “The reason creative workers are receiving a declining share of the wealth generated by their work is the same reason all workers are receiving a smaller share—we have structured society to make rich people richer at everyone else’s expense,” Doctorow and his co-author Rebecca Giblin write. Despite publicly denying climate science, fossil fuel giants have long been aware of the catastrophic consequences of burning fossil fuels, and millions of people are dying each year as a result. Should these executives be held accountable for the deaths caused by their products—and their lies? The residents of East Palestine, Ohio have been at the epicenter of one of the country’s largest environmental disasters in living memory. On Feb. 3, a Norfolk Southern freight train carrying toxic chemicals, including the human carcinogen vinyl chloride, derailed, contaminating the soil and surrounding waterways and erupting into a fireball and mushroom cloud that dwarfed the village. To allegedly prevent an even more catastrophic explosion, officials then intentionally vented more noxious fumes and set it all on fire again—sending more toxic chemicals into the air and community. In this important episode, you’ll hear from a reporter who has been on the ground digging for answers; another who exposes how corruption, deregulation, and the rail industry’s obsession with profits over people helped contribute to this catastrophe; and an East Palestine resident who shares in devastating detail her guilt, anguish, and fury over the untold impacts this tragedy has already had on her children’s health as she confronts the heartbreaking realization that her community will never be the same again. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. demanded justice and equality—two essential truths which still have not been achieved, more than 50 years since his murder on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. Year after year, without fail, politicians, pundits, and corporations bastardize his image and legacy to their own capitalistic agendas—capitalism and its many evils something MLK fought so relentlessly against. This year, ahead with our annual re-release of our inaugural episode ‘MLK: What They Won’t Teach in School,’ we’re re-dropping this one highlighting his last month and final campaign, supporting the Memphis sanitation strike. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was sooo much more than what talking heads and (collective groan) car companies purport. Do not confine him to those infamous four syllables, ‘I have a dream.’ Hopefully, these two episodes will help you understand why. AKA "Corporate Profiteering During Record Inflation"  As the media obsessed over record inflation for much of the year, major corporations were publicly celebrating their recent rise in profits and admitting in earnings calls that they were raising prices on consumers—effectively price gouging Americans. This boon to corporate coffers also comes amid increased use of stock buybacks to funnel money back into the hands of board members and executives—money that could be used to drive down costs for consumers, research and development, or investing in their workforce. A practice that only decades earlier was considered an illegal form of market manipulation, is now all too common. Even The New York Times does it—so much for having faith in your news sources. Turns out, these giant corporations were aware of the harmful effects of greenhouse gas emissions for DECADES and instead of combatting the crisis they’ve engaged in obfuscation and manipulative marketing campaigns to sow confusion and mistrust of science. At the same time, some of the most influential ad agencies on the planet—along with news organizations—have helped fossil fuel companies hone their image amid calls for increased action to reduce harmful emissions and fight the ever-worsening climate crisis! This is the story of how a greed-obsessed industry mastered the art of manipulation to f*** the world—with help from some well-connected friends. Bernadette Smith scours the depths of the Red River in Manitoba for her missing sister and other women and children murdered and dumped in its murky waters. Duana Johnson comforts families of those who’ve vanished from reservations throughout the U.S. Northwest. Mary Kathryn Nagle battles for justice on behalf of the mothers, daughters, sisters, aunties, and nieces stolen, tortured, raped, and killed. These Native women represent the countless voices extinguished by the ongoing genocide confronted by the MMIWG2S movement. Who’s committing these atrocities, and why isn’t more being done to stop them?!? This special episode of the News Beat podcast delves into the mystery, horrors, and heartbreak defining the crisis, searching for answers to these and many other haunting questions centuries in the making. Adding to the visceral journalistic storytelling, South Carolina-by-way-of-New York Hip Hop sorceress LiKWUiD performs original verse to illuminate the epidemic, and mission to end it.  News Beat is a multi-award-winning podcast brought to you by Morey Creative Studios and Manny Faces Media. Ukraine is at the center of a proxy war between decades-long rivals and two competing economic systems, and opportunistic weapons manufacturers are cashing in. We provide a much-needed historical perspective about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, elements of which have gone under-reported, if not ignored entirely, by the corporate media. Our guests for this episode include Jennifer Briney, host of the fantastic podcast ‘Congressional Dish,' and Sam Ratner, policy director of the nonprofit Win Without War. A staggering percentage of those locked up in America’s mass incarceration crisis—upwards of 20%, or 200,000 folks (!!)—were homeless or in marginal housing leading up to their imprisonment. Forty percent were on welfare. Even more were jobless, especially among the Black community. And far too many were in public housing or foster care prior to even turning 18. This episode examines the devastating link between poverty and incarceration in the United States—what reform advocates dub America’s ‘Poverty to Prison Pipeline.’ News Beat is a multi-award-winning podcast brought to you by Morey Creative Studios and Manny Faces Media. On May 14, an 18-year-old white supremacist armed with an assault rifle and wearing body armor livestreamed his massacre of 10 Black people at a Tops supermarket in Buffalo, New York. Ten days later, another 18-year-old slaughtered 19 children and two adults at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. While investigators scramble for motivations behind the latter, those of the accused mass murderer in the Buffalo shooting are crystal clear: He wanted to kill as many African Americans as possible, and researched Upstate New York neighborhoods, and that particular Tops, to do so. This mini-episode examines how America’s systemic racism played a role.  News Beat is a multi-award-winning podcast brought to you by Morey Creative Studios and Manny Faces Media. Devised in the wake of the September 11th Terror Attacks and subsequent 9/11 Commission casting much of the blame on the lack of interjurisdictional communication between law enforcement, fusion centers have continued to operate in the shadows and outside the realms of the public eye, and even elected officials, ever since. Yet instead of foreign and domestic terrorists, these multi-million-dollar surveillance hubs monitor and collect data about everyday people exercising their constitutional rights to protest, assemble, speak out—or even simply snap a photo in the proximity of something as ubiquitous as a bridge. There’s at least one fusion center in every state, 80 in all, with hundreds of ancillary support agencies forming a complex network of local and federal law enforcement agencies—and private corporations—stretching every community across America, with dubious results.  News Beat is a multi-award-winning podcast brought to you by Morey Creative Studios and Manny Faces Media. In 2017, shortly after the deadly "Unite The Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, we released an episode titled ‘Misunderstanding Terrorism: Exposing Radical Caucasian Extremism’ calling out what the vast majority of mainstream news outlets and then-President Trump wouldn’t, yet what study after study had been warning about for quite some time: It wasn’t foreign Muslims posing the biggest threat to America’s safety—but white, far-right extremists. Tragically, this ideology’s death toll continues to climb.   We re-released this episode in the wake of the January 6 insurrection on the Capitol to shine extra light on this brutal trend, and we’re sadly doing so again now, following the racially motivated mass murder of 10 people at a supermarket in Buffalo, NY. The Rev. This year, along with our annual re-release of our inaugural episode ‘MLK: What They Won’t Teach in School,’ we’re dropping this brand new one highlighting his last month and final campaign, supporting the Memphis sanitation strike. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was sooo much more than what talking heads and (collective groan) car companies purport. Do not confine him to those infamous four syllables, ‘I have a dream.’ Hopefully, these two episodes will help you understand why. Williams of the First Baptist Church of Glen Cove, NY, Larry Hamm, of the People's Organization for Progress, hip-hop artist Silent Knight, and King’s own words, listeners learn of MLK’s Poor People’s Campaign, which he believed would be his true legacy. More than likely, it was this that got him killed. News Beat is a Morey Creative Studios production, in association with Manny Faces Media. When disaster strikes, who profits? That’s the question Australian-based reporter Antony Loewenstein has been investigating for years. “Disaster capitalism” was first coined by renowned journalist and author Naomi Klein in her 2007 best-selling book “Shock Doctrine.” Loewenstein digs deeper with on-the-ground reporting to show how companies around the world profit from misery.  News Beat is a multi-award-winning podcast brought to you by Morey Creative Studios and Manny Faces Media. Surprise, surprise. Modern day citizen’s arrest laws across the United States have their roots in Civil War-era laws designed to punish slaves. Beware the false messiahs of meaningful criminal justice reform, the so-called bipartisan coalition championing initiatives that purport to make a difference yet do absolutely nothing to incite true change, and in fact, further tighten the historical and ongoing noose of neoliberalism and structural racism within the world’s largest prison state. Since last spring, politicians, right-wing pundits, the media, and so-called “centrist” Democrats have weaponized the rise in violent crimes, including murders, to demonize police reform efforts and blame progressives. Sure enough, they conveniently neglect to mention that crime is up across the country—in cities run by Democrats and Republicans. We examine the spike in violent crime, potential factors, and whether defund and police reform are really to blame. Hint: It ain’t as simple as that. Law enforcement is increasingly using facial recognition, AI and other technologies despite numerous studies and real world examples of such tech falsely identifying criminal suspects. This episode was honored as Best Podcast at the 2021 New York Press Club Journalism Awards. We dedicate the win to the many voices -- both heard, and unheard -- represented in this episode. The 2020 rebellions sparked renewed discussions surrounding a host of racial issues, including police brutality toward black men. Advocates argue that black women are similarly exposed to excessive police violence yet routinely forgotten or ignored. Among their demands: Say Her Name. If you pay attention to mainstream media, you’d notice that many outlets are recognizing June 17, 2021 as the 50th anniversary of the “war on drugs.” Actually, the racist and deadly drug war goes back much further than conventional wisdom suggests, and was originally waged by an authoritarian bureaucrat that most people likely have never heard of. We think it’s important to understand the REAL history, to understand how others, including Nixon and Reagan, built on its foundation over the many decades since the war on drugs truly began. Guilty pleas have become the dominant way in which prosecutors in America secure convictions. In some cases, 99 percent of cases in various jurisdictions end in a plea bargain. While plea bargaining has been a function of the American justice system for nearly a century, the practice started taking hold in the 1970s following various Supreme Court decisions that upheld its constitutionality. Through the imposition of money bail and harsh sentencing practices, prosecutors across the country have wide leverage to convince defendants to accept plea deals—even if they’re innocent. This is the story about how guilty pleas have completely transformed the justice system. Reform candidates are increasingly winning district attorney elections in the United States. The movement represents a  direct challenge to the decades-long tough-on-crime era, characterized by punitive sentencing laws, significant investments in police forces and prisons, and the criminalization of mental health—culminating in the highest incarceration rates in the world. Opponents are fighting back, with the most recent example being Los Angeles County, where a union representing hundreds of prosecutors has sued newly elected District Attorney George Gascon. We examine the fight over prosecutorial discretion—long cherished by self-styled law and order prosecutors—and what the contentious battle in Los Angeles means for reformers nationwide. January 6, 2021 was a dark day in the history of this nation. What we all witnessed at the U.S. Capitol was a full-on assault on democracy, incited by President Donald Trump and carried out by right-wing extremists—or simply, domestic terrorists.  Tragically, these events, although deeply unsettling, shouldn’t have surprised anyone. Experts have been warning of the threat of right-wing domestic terrorists for years. In 2020 alone, two-thirds of domestic attacks or plots were committed by white supremacists or right-wing extremists. Due to the deadly events of January 6th—again, incited by Trump’s incendiary remarks and outright lies about the 2020 election results—we are re-releasing our drop from 2017 titled “Radical Caucasian Extremism.” This hugely important episode highlighted the threat posed by such extremists, even as many in the media and government engaged in Islamophobic rhetoric about Muslim Americans.
