For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Josh Parham, Eve O'Dea, Dan Bayer & Will Mavity. Together, we're reviewing the latest film from director Bay Luhrmann, "Elvis," starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks. The film is your typical musical biopic but with the glamour, style, and bombastic filmmaking from Luhrmann with a breakout performance from Butler and a polarizing performance from Hanks. Needless to say, opinions are all over the place on this one. But where do we land? What did we think of the presentation, performances, costumes, makeup, editing, and story? Please find out by taking a listen to our review down below and enjoy! Thank you! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Jeremy Podeswa has been working in television for over twenty years now, working on hit shows such as "Broadwalk Empire, "Game Of Thrones," and "The Handmaid's Tale." This year he directed three episodes of the HBO Miniseries "Station Eleven," including the final two episodes. Based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Emily St. John Mandel, the show stars Mackenzie Davis, Himesh Patel, Matilda Lawler, David Wilmot, Nabhaan Rizwan, Daniel Zovatto, Philippine Velge. It depicts the collapse of civilization following a flu pandemic with obvious real-world connections to today. Jeremy was kind enough to spend some time talking about his work on the show, which is up for your consideration for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. We hope you enjoy the conversation and that you will check out the show now streaming on HBO Max. Thank you. Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... If you ask most people which television series from 2022 was the breakout new show of the year, they will probably say Dan Erickson's "Severance." Sean one premiered on AppleTV+ on February 18th with the week-to-week episodes directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle. It received critical acclaim for its writing, performances by the ensemble, and immersion into its world and concept. Many talented people worked on this show to bring it to life, and we're proud to showcase their work in this series of podcast interviews. For your consideration this Emmy season, we have Composer Theodore Shapiro, Production Designers Jeremy Hindle, Nick Francone & Cinematographer Jessica Lee Gagné, all of whom helped to make the show as memorable as it's been. We hope you enjoy these interviews in our special behind-the-scenes look at one of 2022's best shows. Thank you! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2012 retrospective continues with Quentin Tarantino's Oscar-winning film "Django Unchained" starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington & Samuel L. Jackson. A massive hit at the box office and with critics upon its release, how does the revisionist revenge western hold up for us a decade later? Please tune in below as we discuss Tarantino's writing, directing, the performances, the crafts, and how we feel about its Oscar wins all of these years later. It's a lively discussion with a wide range of opinions almost as long as the movie itself. Joining me for this review, I have Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, Danilo Castro & guest Ryan McQuade. "Cha Cha Real Smooth" premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received a warm reception and was later picked up by Apple. It is now streaming on AppleTV+ where thousands of people are getting the opportunity to see the acclaimed follow-up film from Cooper Raiff, co-starring Dakota Johnson in what many are calling her best performance to date. Like his directorial debut "Shithouse," Cooper Raiff wrote, directed, acted, and produced the film, imbuing it with his own style and voice, which is clearly speaking to many people. Cooper was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about the film from multiple sides of production. We hope you enjoy the conversation. Thank you! The follow-up to his directorial debut "Shithouse," Raiff's latest premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to enthusiastic reviews and is now streaming on Apple TV. What did we think of the film's writing, performances, and themes? This one certainly inspired a lot of thoughtful conversation, which you can listen to down below in our SPOILER-FILLED review. "Under The Banner Of Heaven" is a true-crime miniseries on FX (which is now streaming in full on Hulu) that depicts the real-life investigation into the Lafferty family and the LDS Church in Utah during the 1980s. Developed by Dustin Lance Black, director Isabel Sandoval ("Lingua Franca") was brought on board for the limited series' penultimate episode "Revelation," which has been submitted for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. "Lightyear" is a story taking place within the "Toy Story" universe as the movie a five-year-old Andy saw in the movie theater that made him want to own a Buzz Lightyear toy. With Chris Evans stepping in to voice the iconic character and a new team of animators at Pixar using the latest technology, the film combines action, comedy, and heart to provide a sci-fi adventure the likes of which the animation studio hasn't given us before. Director and writer Angus MacLane and producer Galyn Susman were kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about their work on the film, which you can listen to down below, or you can subscribe to the show on your favorite podcast app using the links provided. For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Ema Sasic & Dan Bayer. Together, we're reviewing the latest film from Disney Pixar, "Lightyear," Chris Evans, Keke Palmer, Peter Sohn, James Brolin & Taika Waititi. Based on the movie the character Andy saw in 1995, which inspired him to want a Buzz Lightyear action figure (we know, we know), the film is Pixar's first foray into the world of science-fiction as Buzz goes on an adventure that will take him to infinity and beyond. What did we think of the story, the characters, the humor, and the action? Find out in our review down below. Please take a listen and enjoy! Thank you! "Good Luck To You, Leo Grande" premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival and was later picked up by Searchlight Pictures, who released it this weekend on Hulu. The film stars Emma Thompson in one of her best roles to date as Nancy, a middle-aged retired woman looking for good sex at this point in her life, and Daryl McCormack in a breakout turn as her hired young sex-worker, Leo Grande. Both of them deliver terrific performances and are aided by the thoughtful writing from screenwriter Katy Brand. The sex-positive story carefully outlines both characters with a high level of detail, providing an insightful analysis of sex and the relationship the two share with one another. Katy was kind enough to talk with us about her screenplay, the characters, the hotel setting they share, and more. Please be sure to check out the film, now streaming on Hulu, and have a listen down below and enjoy. Thank you! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2012 retrospective continues with director Tom Hooper's follow-up to his Oscar Best Picture-winning film "The King Speech" with "Les Misérables" starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Samantha Barks, Aaron Tveit, and Daniel Huttlestone. A major Oscar contender on paper due to the musical's pedigree in the world of Broadway, the film achieved financial success at the box office while critical reception was more mixed. What do we think of it ten years later? How do we feel about the performances (singing ad acting), the cinematography, production design, the adaptation from stage to film, and its awards season run? The story of Michael Peterson, the mysterious death of his wife Kathleen Peterson, and the subsequent investigation, trial, and fallout on their family has challenged and fascinated audiences for years, starting with the 2004 true crime documentary series by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade and now with HBO Max's "The Staircase." Written by Antonio Campos and Maggie Cohn, with Campos directing six out of the eight episodes, the series has garnered critical acclaim for its performances and the exhausting detail which went into the research behind one of the most puzzled over mysteries of our time. "The Phantom Of The Open" tells the unlikely true story of Maurice Flitcroft, a British golfer who, with no prior experience, managed to sneak his way into the pros and received the worst score ever recorded at the Open Championship. His determination to keep on playing and improve made him an inspiring figure for many to this day. Director Craig Roberts ("Tolkien") and screenwriter Simon Farnaby ("Paddington 2") came together to tell his story, and they do it with precision, liveliness, and delight. Both of them were kind enough to spend time talking about how they came across the project, working with Mark Rylance and Sally Hawkins, what they hope audiences will take away from Maurice's story, and more. I absolutely love this podcast, but I wish they would talk more about what SHOULD win the Oscars and not what will win. Also, they thought the 3 Billboards screenplay was a mess, but they loved Wonder Woman? WTF?
