Brian Bogusevic, former Astros outfielder and Space City Home Network analyst, joins Next Up after the San Francisco Giants defeated the Astros 5-3 Wednesday at Oracle Park. Framber Valdez started on the mound, recording a season-low four innings while allowing eight hits and five earned runs. "That's a tough call to make" to pull Valdez early, but "when guys are elevating off of him, it's not good," Bogusevic said. The Astros dropped the three game series to the Giants 2-1, have lost three out of their last four games, land at a 31-38 record on the season and fall 8.5 games back from the lead in the AL West. Bogusevic says "it's the veteran guys...that got to lead the way" for a postseason spot. "They have to turn leads into wins every time." Jon Singleton returned to the lineup Wednesday, batting in the cleanup spot as the designated hitter, but went 0-4 at the plate. Jose Abreu started at first base and batted eighth, going 0-3 with his at-bats. In regards to playing Abreu, "I don't think it's Joe Espada's decision," Bogusevic said. Espada and Dana Brown "are being handed a roster that they need to play." The Astros are "just stuck with that you have...until you find a better option." The MLB trade deadline falls on July 30, and Bogusevic says the Astros are "going to be in position to add" to the roster. "They can only get better," and the main acquisitions would need to address "starting pitching" and "a big bat somewhere" in the lineup.
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up react to former Houston Texans head coach and general manager Bill O'Brien, who made an appearance on the "Next Up With Adam Breneman" podcast to reflect on his time in Houston, saying he regretted taking on the general manager responsibility.
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up recap the Houston Astros defeating the San Francisco Giants 3-1 to tie the series at a game apiece. After two consecutive walk-off losses, the Astros rebounded Tuesday as Ronel Blanco started on the mound and struck out eight batters, allowing only one run in six innings. The bullpen protected the lead with Tayler Scott, Bryan Abreu and Ryan Pressly each throwing a scoreless inning. The Astros will attempt to win three series in a row with the final game against the Giants on Wednesday. Stan and Chris give the latest updates on Kyle Tucker and Yainer Diaz who are both dealing with injury, review comments from Bill O'Brien who addressed his time as the Texans head coach and general manager, react to the passing of NBA legend Jerry West and more.
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up react to the Houston Astros losing 4-3 on the road to the San Francisco Giants in their second walk-off loss in a row. Spencer Arrighetti started on the mound and allowed one run on four hits and three walks while striking out six in just over five innings. However, the Astros would not be able to hold onto their lead when Rafael Montero allowed three runs on four hits in the bottom of the 10th inning. The Astros move to a 30-37 record on the season, 7.5 games back from the lead in the AL West. As injuries continue to plague the lineup and pitching rotation, will the Astros finalize trades before the MLB deadline on July 30 in an attempt to make a push for the postseason? Stan and Chris review trade proposals for the Astros, recap dinner with Matt Thomas of The Matt Thomas Show and more.
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up review the Houston Astros winning two out of a three-game road series against the Los Angeles Angels. The Astros lost 9-7 on Sunday after Ryan Pressly took the mound in the eighth inning and allowed a pair of runs that tied the game at seven. Josh Hader got the Astros out of the eighth but gave up a walk-off home run in the ninth. The injuries continue to pile up after third baseman Alex Bregman was hit by a pitch in his left hand, which led him to exit the game. Left fielder Kyle Tucker was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right shin contusion. The Astros continue their road trip with the first of a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants on Monday. Stan and Chris discuss a possible trade for Astros center fielder Jake Meyers, talk with KPRC reporter Aaron Wilson about Texans minicamp, discuss the Dallas Mavericks losing two games in the NBA Finals and more.
KPRC reporter Aaron Wilson joins Next Up to recap the Houston Texans following mandatory minicamp. Kamari Lassiter, the Texans' second-round draft pick out of Georgia, turned heads and practiced with the first-team defense. "He had his moments" and "reacted well against a Pro Bowl guy" in Stefon Diggs, Wilson said. The Buffalo Bills traded Diggs to the Texans on April 3, and Diggs has been improving his timing and "is starting to build some chemistry" with quarterback C.J. Stroud. Along with Lassiter, linebacker Azeez-Al Shaair and defensive end Denico Autry have improved the depth of the Texans defense. Autry "can play inside or outside" on the defensive line, and as good as Blake Cashman was, [Al Shaair] is an upgrade." Steven Nelson, former Texans cornerback and a team captain last season, announced his retirement from the NFL after nine seasons. According to Wilson, Nelson "had offers," including from the Texans prior to the signings of C.J. Henderson and Jeff Okudah, but is deciding to retire for personal reasons.
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up preview the Houston Astros going on the road to take on the Los Angeles Angels for a weekend series starting Friday. The Astros have a 28-35 record on the season and currently sit 7.5 games back from the lead in the AL West. The Texans completed mandatory minicamp, allowing a first look at new teammates such as Stefon Diggs and Danielle Hunter. Eric Edholm, lead draft writer for NFL.com, joins to discuss the Texans chances of winning the Super Bowl for this upcoming season. Stan and Chris further analyze the Texans with former Texans defensive tackle Amobi Okoye, recap game one of the NBA Finals, tell embarrassing stories and more.
Eric Edholm, lead draft writer for NFL.com, joins Next Up to preview the Houston Texans ahead of the upcoming NFL season. Edholm published an article ranking the 12 NFL teams that have yet to win a Super Bowl by who is most likely to win the Vince Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans. Edholm ranks the Texans as the fourth most likely team to win their first Super Bowl this season behind the Detroit Lions, Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills. "I still have my doubts," Edholm said. If the Texans are ready for a Super Bowl this year, "it's got to be a big improvement." However, Edholm does not deny that the Texans have upgraded on both sides of the ball but still questions the depth up front and the strength of the secondary.
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up recap the Houston Astros losing 4-2 against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday at Minute Maid Park. The Astros took the series 2-1 and will go on the road to take on the Los Angeles Angels for a weekend series starting Friday. Brian Bogusevic, former Astros outfielder and Space City Home Network analyst, joins to discuss the effect injured starting pitching will have on the rest of the rotation. Stan and Chris preview game one of the NBA Finals with Brendan Haywood, NBA TV analyst and champion with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011, break down Kamari Lassiter's performance at Texans mandatory minicamp, react to the Lakers preparing to offer UConn head coach Dan Hurley and more.
Brendan Haywood, NBA TV analyst and champion with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011, joins Next Up to preview the finals matchup between the Mavericks and Boston Celtics. "I got Dallas in six [games]," Haywood said. Jason Kidd, who is also a NBA champion with the Mavericks and has been the organization's head coach since 2021, "has been doing a great job" with a dominant backcourt in Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving. "You have two incredible wizards with the ball." Haywood says Dončić's "game is way different than Dirk [Nowitzki]," but "the similarity is the mentality." Haywood anticipates the Mavericks will target Celtics forward Kristaps Porziņģis. "The Celtics have scorers," but "the Mavericks have playmakers." Haywood also comments on the Houston Rockets having the No. 3 overall pick in the draft. "This team has a bunch of young talent" and could add to it by drafting Reed Sheppard or Donovan Clingan, but the Rockets should look to trade their pick for an established player, such as Jerami Grant, Zach LaVine or Mikal Bridges.
Brian Bogusevic, former Astros outfielder and Space City Home Network analyst, joins Next Up to discuss Astros starting pitchers Cristian Javier and Jose Urquidy who will be out for the remainder of this season and part of next season as both are scheduled to have right elbow surgery. The Astros starting rotation has dealt with injuries all year, including Luis Garcia and Lance McCullers who are not expected to return until after the All-Star break and J.P. France who has yet to resume a rehab program after being optioned to Sugar Land. "The depth has been stressed to its max," Bogusevic said. "It's a cause for concern" as the Astros are operating with five healthy starters on the 40-man roster: Justin Verlander, Framber Valdez, Hunter Brown, Spencer Arrighetti and Ronel Blanco. "They all have to be good every time." On whether the Astros could have better prepared for this scenario by adding pitching insurance in the offseason, Bogusevic says the Astros had a healthy rotation heading into spring training. "What else could you have done?" The Astros could not complete the series sweep against the St. Louis Cardinals, losing 4-2 on Wednesday. Third baseman Alex Bregman was scratched due to a sore left hand after being hit by a pitch the night before. Right fielder Kyle Tucker missed his second straight game after fouling a ball off his right shin Monday. The Astros currently sit at a 28-35 record, seven games back from the lead in the AL West. Bogusevic says this Astros lineup is "good enough to get their selves back in" the postseason race, but are also "incentivized to be early movers" in the trade market if players do not perform.
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up react to breaking news that Houston Astros starting pitchers Cristian Javier and Jose Urquidy are both scheduled to have right elbow surgery and will be out for the remainder of this season and a part of next season. The Astros have dealt with injuries to their starting rotation all year, including Luis Garcia and Lance McCullers who are not expected to return until after the All-Star break. Will the Astros trade for another starter, and was it a mistake to not get more pitching insurance last offseason? The Astros won the second of a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday at Minute Maid Park. Yainer Diaz homered in back-to-back games to help the Astros win 8-5. Ronel Blanco will start on the mound Wednesday as the Astros attempt to complete the series sweep over the Cardinals and earn a winning record at home. Stan and Chris also review the latest comments from Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans, quarterback C.J. Stroud and wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell as mandatory minicamp continues.
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up recap the Houston Astros defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4 Monday at Minute Maid Park. Starting pitcher Justin Verlander struggled in the first inning, giving up two home runs, but with bullpen help and home runs from Yordan Alvarez, Alex Bregman and Yainer Diaz, the Astros earned the victory and moved to seven games back from the lead in the AL West. Stan and Chris also discuss the Texans beginning mandatory minicamp and review the latest comments from quarterback C.J. Stroud and wide receiver Tank Dell.
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up react to breaking news that former Houston Astros prospect Michael Kelly was suspended by Major League Baseball "for violating MLB's sports betting rules and policies," per an MLB investigation. Kelly, who was pitching for the Oakland Athletics, received a one-year suspension for wagers made during his time with the Astros Triple-A affiliate in Sugar Land. Three of the nine games Kelly placed wagers on involved the Astros, betting a total of $99.22 on MLB games. The league announced suspensions for five players Tuesday, including San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano who received a lifetime ban from baseball. Stan and Chris debate whether the gambling policies in sports and their consequences for athletes are warranted.
Chris Gordy and Dan Mattehws talk about what going on in Houston sports and more on Monday, June 3rd, 2024.
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up recap the Houston Astros earning a 4-0 victory in the final game of a four-game road series against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday to avoid a sweep. Spencer Arrighetti started on the mound, pitching six scoreless innings and only allowing two hits and three walks while striking out eight in the best outing of his career. OTAs continued with new Texans, such as Stefon Diggs and Danielle Hunter, attending. Former Texans defensive tackle Amobi Okoye joins in-studio to preview the upcoming season and review the latest comments from quarterback C.J. Stroud's star teammates.
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up react to the Houston Astros losing three straight on the road against the Seattle Mariners with the latest defeat ending in a 2-1 final in the 10th inning on Wednesday. Justin Verlander started on the mound, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out nine in over seven innings. Brian Bogusevic, former Astros outfielder and Space City Home Network analyst, joins to discuss the Astros falling to 24-32 on the season and 6.5 games back from the lead in the AL West. Stan and Chris comment on Stefon Diggs and Danielle Hunter attending Texans OTAs, predict Texans stat leaders for the upcoming season and more.
Brian Bogusevic, former Astros outfielder and Space City Home Network analyst, joins Next Up to discuss the Astros losing three straight games on the road against the Seattle Mariners with the latest defeat ending in a 2-1 final in the 10th inning on Wednesday. Justin Verlander started on the mound, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out nine in over seven innings. Framber Valdez and Hunter Brown have also given the Astros quality starts in this series, but the bats have not been productive. When asked why the Astros offense is inconsistent, Bogusevic said "it's not any one thing," and "you've got to do the little things." The Astros fall to 24-32 on the season and 6.5 games back from the lead in the AL West. "It's fair to criticize anybody with a uniform on," but "I don't know what [Joe Espada] could do differently," Bogusevic said.
Stan Norfleet and Chris Gordy of Next Up review the Houston Astros losing 4-2 to the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, making it two straight losses. The Astros are now 5.5 games back from the lead in the AL West. Hunter Brown started on the mound, allowing only one run on four hits and no walks while striking out nine in six innings. Even though Brown had one of his best performances of the season, things would unravel for the Astros as Ryan Pressly blew his fourth save of the season in the eighth inning. The Texans signed wide receiver Nico Collins to a three-year, $72.75 million extension that includes $52 million guaranteed with a maximum value of $75 million. KPRC reporter Aaron Wilson joins to break down the contract and discuss the futures of other current Texans.
