Near Owen Sound, Ontario, 1988 On April 26th, 1988, a man was shot and killed in a remote cabin deep in rural Ontario—a single act of violence that raised more questions than answers. Four witnesses were in the cabin that night, but their stories didn’t add up. They contradicted each other, and as the investigation continued, they even contradicted themselves. At the center of this confusing and unsettling case was Mae McEachern, a woman who would ultimately be charged with murder. What really happened that night in the cabin? In this episode of Nighttime, Mae's defense attorney and author Brian Barrie joins us to revisit the case, unpack the conflicting accounts, and explore the search for answers.. Taylor Samson, a university student, tells his girlfriend he’ll be back soon and leaves carrying a duffel bag she assumes contains marijuana. When he never returns, fears grow that he was the victim of a drug deal gone wrong. The investigation quickly becomes one of Nova Scotia’s most high-profile murder trials, involving two Dalhousie University students: Taylor, the victim, and William Sandeson, the accused, just days away from starting medical school. In this episode, the fifth in a series, Kayla Hounsell walks us through William Sandeson's second trial.  Links: listen to prior episodes of the Murder of Taylor Samson and the trials of William Sandeson - https://www.nighttimepodcast.com/episodes/taylor-samson-1 Get Second Degree by Kayla Hounsell: https://nimbus.ca/store/second-degree.html?srsltid=AfmBOoryOECB2vacE6FvL6W9Fq5SghaloWjskPSQ7tx7m2Kdadkrx_lp Subscribe to the show: https://www.nighttimepodcast.com/subscribe Provide feedback, comments, or case suggestions: nighttimepodcast.com/contact Musical Theme: Noir Toyko by Monty Datta Contact: Website: https://www.nighttimepodcast.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NightTimePod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nighttimepod Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/nighttimepodcast Learn more about your ad choices. Halifax, Nova Scotia, Saturday, Aug 15, 2015 Taylor Samson, a local university student, tells his girlfriend he has to run out for a moment and that he wouldn’t be long. When she see’s him exiting the apartment carrying a large duffel bag, she assumes it contains marijuana. When he fails to return home that night.. or ever again, she, and many others in Taylor’s life, begin to suspect he was the victim in a drug deal gone very wrong. What will start as a missing persons investigation will become one of Nova Scotia’s highest profile murder trials. One that sees two students of Halifax’s Dalhousie University at center stage. The Victim, Taylor Samson and the accused William Sandeson who at the time of Taylor’s murder was only days away from beginning classes at the prominent medical school. In part four of this series I’ll again be joined by Kayla Hounsell (author of First Degree: From Med-school to Murder) and our topic will be the surprising legal updates that have made this story far from over. When one hears a story like that of Taylor's murder it's hard to not digest the twists, turns, and surprise the way you would a work of fiction. In part one and two, Kayla and I made a point to discuss the character of Taylor Samson, and the role he played in the lives of many who stand heartbroken on the sidelines of this case. But, two people removed from the story can only take that so far. For part three, I wanted to place a cap stone on this series, something that brings the events surrounding Taylor's death into the right context... that being the senseless murder of a human being loved by many as a son, a friend, a student, an entrepreneur, and much more.  To help tell us about what it means to lose Taylor, I've invited one of the people who know him best. Someone who looked to Taylor as both a role model, a sometimes nuisance, an eternal protector, and a best friend... Taylor's younger brother Connor Samson.  Credits: Music: Vox Somnia Links: Buy First Degree: https://www.amazon.ca/First-Degree-Medical-School-Murder/dp/1771086661 Vox Somnia: https://twitter.com/voxsomnia Contact: Website: https://www.nighttimepodcast.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/NightTimePod Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NightTimePod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nighttimepod Email: NightTimePodcast@gmail.com Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/nighttimepodcast Premium Feed: https://www.patreon.com/Nighttimepodcast Learn more about your ad choices. What the hell are you talking about "good weird" and "bad weird"? Are you saying people who like Joe Rogan are "bad weird"? Jesus, I hope that's not what you meant. I loved this show. And big surprise, I'm a fan of Joe Rogan. Don't make me choose. Don't be "bad weird" dude. Oh wait, you're Canadian. 😔

this Paul guy is an idiot. He is one of these old blowhards that think that their opinion reigns supreme. That it's the only way to think, and there's no room for a different way of thinking. He doesn't speak for everyone. That's why an opinion is an opinion. And in my opinion he's an idiot!

Such a terrible story. A beautiful young life, just gone. It sounds terrible to admit, but I do like the darker direction of this Nighttime podcast series. I think we need to shine a light into the darker areas of life..... and death.

I am a big fan, and was hoping to have you guys look into the horrific story of Clude Marshall. In 2015 Clyde and his girlfriend brutally murdered a man in his apartment followed by a manhunt. What ppl don't know is that Clyde is a autistic man who was brutally neglected, beaten, raped and abused in ways that are scary. His first foster parents left him.chained outside to a doghouse. When he was 12 he was sent to the infamous Elan school in Poland, Maine, USA. I was there with him, and even though he has the mentally of a 7 year old, they put him in boxing rings daily, tortured him, sleep.and food deprived him, and what is worse is he was being raped by a older teen there, I walked in on it, and staff punished Clyde for being raped. The story in the Canadian newspapers do not tell the real story of what happened when he killed that man, because Clyde took the fall for gis girlfriend, you may wonder why, but i think between his trauma and autism he just wanted to be loved, and would do

This had to be difficult for Camille. It's obvious she has been dealing with her doubts about her ability to be helpful to Riley and her feelings of guilt. I hope she does take care of herself and has support working through all of the inevitable grieving and healing. I thank her for agreeing to to share as I hope better understanding will help us all be better able to support and respond when we see anyone struggling.
