No— just kidding. Definitely don’t do that. But also, be kind to yourself. Perhaps, be so kind to yourself that you finally take that next step and start your own shiny new podcast series. Forrealdo. Get full access to Noncasting at www.noncasting.com/subscribe
I just took 100 days off from drinking alcohol. But I also took 114 days off from recording Noncasting. Coincidence? Get full access to Noncasting at www.noncasting.com/subscribe
How I fell in love with a documentary about volcanos, and why it totally broke my heart. Aside from the magical feel this film exudes, it’s also—in its simplest form—a love story about two volcanologists who are madly in love with raw discovery, each other, and yet somehow still ooze individuality. Somehow I managed to reference Billy Corgan and George Santos in the same episode. What does it mean? It means the world is in fact a vampire, but a vampire that never really worked at Goldman Sachs or even graduated from Vampire school.Books mentioned in this episode:* “Survival of the Richest: Escape Fantasies of the Tech Billionaires by Douglas Rushkoff* “After the Fall” by Ben Rhodes* “Getting to Zero” by Jayson Gaddis* “Less is More: How Degrowth Will Save the World” by Jason HickelOther notable reads in the past few months:* “The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell” by Robert Dugong* “Indigenous Continent” The Epic Contest for North America” by Pekka Hämäläinen* “An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States” by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz Get full access to Noncasting at www.noncasting.com/subscribe
We humans don’t molt. There's no physical reminder that we’ve shed our skins from a previous version of ourselves. We can’t leave it on the ground behind us, somehow indicating growth or personal evolution. But we can share our experiences with each other. And what’s more, we can share those moments of personal expansion online. Let’s call it audio molting, if you may. Get full access to Noncasting at www.noncasting.com/subscribe
Why as a society do we fail to recognize the incredibly important role of step-parenting? In pop culture we like to depict stepdads as threatening, cruel and often evil villains when more often than not they are the heroes in our stories— the ones that actually step up when others step down. Recently my kids have taken to searching for thin-rectangle-shaped rocks on the beach and pretending that they are iPhones. And though that rock is likely millions of years old (and deserves better), my children are running around taking stone selfies. It’s clear: Technology hasn’t saved us, and now we have to save ourselves. Thanks for listening to the first 30 episodes, you rascals!Books mentioned in this episode: * The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell by Robert Dugoni* Less is More by Jason Hickel Get full access to Noncasting at www.noncasting.com/subscribe
Ever get up the courage to dump your deepest traumatic happenings on someones lap only to have them respond with a story about their trauma? We all do it. It’s hard not to. We all want to relate to each other. We often think that’s what the person wants. They don’t. Next time try to listen without telling a counter story. Sometimes burning a bridge and watching those flames light the night sky is exactly what you think you need; it’s not usually a long-term play, but sure, it can feel really validating. But instead, maybe let that first match burn down and fizzle out? Before you light the second match, think carefully; sometimes the end is just the beginning. Transitioning from summer to fall has never been my strong suit. Life at the moment isn’t exactly handing out bouquets of flowers and jellybeans, either. It’s all a practice in learning how to learn, and then re-learning everything you’ve learned only to realize, good god, you have a lot to learn. Right? Like a Super Bowl nipple slip, it’s right there out in the open. Less is more. And less needs to be more. Capitalism requires forever-growth to survive, but what if we actually took the time to recalibrate our economic system? Wouldn’t we all be happier, healthier and better at Pickleball? In early 1993, my grandmother took me to a record store to pick out a new tape. I’d recently gotten a yellow walkman and aside from the Kris Kross ‘Jump’ record, Pearl Jam’s ‘Ten’ (that my cousin had dubbed for me), and MC Hammer’s ‘2 Legit 2 Quit,’ my music catalog was thin. I strategically placed my thumb over the parental advisory sticker, and I was introduced to ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik’ and a new world of sound and meaning. Patti Smith once wrote, “we go through life, we shed our skins, we become ourselves.” The shedding process isn’t always the result of a soft pink loofah with warm lavender soap. Sometimes it’s a slow, arduous, somewhat abrasive affair; more like a rattlesnake shedding its skin on a hot dessert afternoon. But from it comes growth. And growth creates more honest space for connection. Get full access to Noncasting at www.noncasting.com/subscribe
Boris Johnson’s return will likely prove worst than the ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band Reprise;’ hopefully he’s not just the penultimate meal on a course to even broader British lunacy. I’m not sure we have enough buffalo chicken dip to get us through the winter. Enjoy the weekend! Get full access to Noncasting at www.noncasting.com/subscribe
Why do political campaign signs make some people so mad? Dotting leaf-ridden lawns and downtown medians, red, white and boring campaign signs showcase quick bites of opinion or simply boast a local politician’s last name. Effective or not, the poor signs are subject to violence, theft, vandalization, and the deep throaty sighs of perturbed, time-rich, white folks with opposing political views. We’re all entitled to our opinions, until we stick it in the front yard. Get full access to Noncasting at www.noncasting.com/subscribe
I spent yesterday painting the mudroom at my house and listening to philosopher Kieran Setiya’s new book, Life Is Hard: How Philosophy Can Help Us Find Our Way. It may be too early in the week for philosophy, but nevertheless let us explore why death is unendingly incomprehensible, a human mystery and—at the same time— a given. Our ethics can't keep up with the pace of technology. Though it’s in its infancy, the Metaverse will likely reap the benefits of our unmistakable desire to retreat from reality, creating a pixely wonderland where you can be whomever you please. Somehow this week’s introduction of digital legs is starting to make the inevitable risks feel virtually unavoidable. Get full access to Noncasting at www.noncasting.com/subscribe
The midterm elections are 26 days away. So, in 26 days you can walk away from the polls with your puffy coat freshly adorned with a shiny “I Voted!” sticker. Right? Because you’re going to vote, aren’t you? Sorry, I’m talking to my brother. Get full access to Noncasting at www.noncasting.com/subscribe
I reflect on an opinion piece, “Teenagers Are Telling Us That Something Is Wrong with America.” Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15-29 year-olds and steadily increasing year over year. We face an unprecedented suicide epidemic in this country. Why isn't it taken more seriously? Get full access to Noncasting at www.noncasting.com/subscribe
How Fox news is sinking their Christian nationalist teeth into Kanye’s latest fashion stunt, further exasperating America’s collapsing social structure and our satirical draw to extreme, hostile, ignorant, but clickable personalities.
