Just like a pregnant lady can foretell the expected due date of her child by particular signs, history's course is, in like manner, chartered by specific signs. In Mark 13, the Lord Jesus explains what would entail the world's end by giving vivid details and admonishing us on our posture in these times. John Musyimi, in this sermon, urges us to stay awake because history is pregnant with judgment and labor pains have begun!
Mark 12:13 - 37 portrays a scenario where Jesus is questioned by doubtful, conniving Pharisees and Scribes whose aim is to trap Him in His words. However, as we will see herein, Jesus is not afraid to be questioned. The Christian faith is a faith which faces tremendous scrutiny, but at the same time, it is pegged on the One who embodies perfect wisdom. John Musyimi, in this sermon, seeks to show us that Jesus has the answers because Jesus is the answer!
In Mark 12:38 - 13:2, we see Jesus's response to religious leaders who were outright hypocrites; displaying traits on the outside that they didn't possess on the inside, and requiring praise for this. This blight is a characteristic that follows us daily as Christians in this day and age. The question that prevails over us now is whether our internal health displays our external religious image. John Musyimi, in this sermon, seeks to show us that sham religion is condemned by God, and sincere religion is commended!
This passage in Mark 12 follows a contentious moment from Mark 11 where chief priests and scribes questioned Jesus' authority. It demonstrates a rather alarming scenario where Jesus describes what happens to people who dishonor and disobey God's rule and command. However, as we will see in this sermon, God's wisdom surpasses man's folly, whereby He uses their actions for His ultimate purposes, demonstrating who is actually in charge. John Musyimi, from this passage, seeks to show us that God's ownership of His people cannot be supplanted by wicked leadership over His people!
Following Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem, Mark 11:12 - 33 provides a rather different turn of events. In the preceding texts, He inspected the temple and the place and left, but in this text, He promulgates and enacts judgment in the temple, signifying His ultimate purpose of why He came to the earth. Contrary to what the disciples were expecting from Him in overthrowing the present Roman rule, Jesus came with a different agenda. John Musyimi shows us in this sermon that fruitless religion in God's Kingdom is fated for judgment by God's King!
Mark 11 presents us with a very contrasting incident between two kingdoms. The world, with its rulers, is usually concerned with an outward display of power characterized by pomp and extravagance, embracing the notion that ruling power must be clearly seen and felt. However, this is contrary to how God operates in His Kingdom; one which is characterized by lowliness and meekness. God is more concerned with the salvation of men's souls which is achieved through Christ's suffering (an outward display of weakness). John Musyimi, in this sermon, shows us that the Kingdom of Christ comes as greatness clothed in meekness!
What do you do when a strong resistance to faith dawns on you? This is the prevailing question that faces us in this passage from Mark 10:46 - 52. Jesus is met by a blind beggar, Bartimaeus, who defies the opposition around him to pursue what he believes to be true. This as well exemplifies the Christian life, a life full of wars and fighting, that requires a defiant faith so that it can be lived well. Pastor John Musyimi, in this sermon, shows us that saving faith is stubborn faith!
Naturally, men gravitate towards positions and associations of high regard. This ambition displays itself in various ways: who we associate with, what we desire men to say of us, what we pursue etc. However, as we see in Mark 10:32 - 45, the Christian ambition differs from this pursuit. Christ demonstrates that in His Kingdom, whoever desires to be the greatest shall be the least; for even He did not come to be served, but to serve others and give His life as a ransom for many. John Musyimi, in this sermon, shows us that Christian greatness consists in the ambition for Christ-like servanthood!
Mark 10:13 - 31 presents a peculiar scenario where introspection into our faith journeys is encouraged. Spiritual maturity is the ideal goal for every Christian as is commonly known. However, as demonstrated by Jesus in this passage, there is a level of child-like trust and faith that should be maintained with God in this walk of faith that cannot be substituted for any intellectual acuteness. John Musyimi, in this sermon, showcases that entry into God's Kingdom is so difficult a child could do it!
What is your attitude towards marriage? Is it one that is cynical to the idea, and completely opposes the institution, or is it one that positively welcomes it? In this passage on Mark 10:1 - 12, Jesus, the marriage institution's primary institutor, addresses the main issue that causes marriages to fail, demonstrating that it stems from within. John Musyimi, in this sermon, clearly shows us that God's intention towards marriage opposes man's inclinations towards divorce.
Mark 9:30 - 50 portrays a scenario where we see worldly ambitions and pursuits contrary to the Word of God as clear pathways to hell and judgment. Jesus addresses this in His disciples and subsequently in us to whom the zero-sum game mentality sometimes plagues us; a mentality which considers ourselves above others and disregards their interests. Pastor John Musyimi in this sermon shows us that the danger of worldly ambition is dealt with through sin-killing servanthood!
As human beings, we tend to be lax in diligent effort over certain scenarios when we have encountered previous victories over the same situations. This same mindset can trickle down to our Christian walk of faith. As depicted in Mark 9:14 - 29, we see a case of faithlessness among the disciples directly resulting from their prayerlessness. Pastor John Musyimi, in this sermon, seeks to show us that powerful faith resides in people of prayer.
In the in-between state of the now and the not-yet, we usually face various predicaments that plague us as human beings. These predicaments can even push some of us to states of hopelessness and despair concerning life; states of nihilism. However, for the Christian, the call is contrary to this. Mark shows us in this passage that the sufferings of this world do not negate the promised glory in Christ in His coming Kingdom. John Musyimi, in this sermon, elucidates that the glory of Christ grounds hopeful obedience to Christ!
In a world filled with unbelieving people in unreached contexts, and at the same time, unbelieving people who are continuously exposed to God's Word, the question that dawns on us continuously is how they get saved! Acts 8:26 - 40 gives us a clear perspective on this prevailing question, which Pastor Allan Waruhiu, through three main points, seeks to answer and persuade us from the text based on the Ethiopian eunuch's conversion.
As observed in our day-to-day lives, how we see and perceive things directly affects our actions. The same is true concerning the Christian walk of faith; our perception of Christ directly affects how we conduct ourselves towards Him and subsequently towards His church. John Musyimi, from this passage on Mark 8:22 - 38, shows us that a full sight of Christ is one of a suffering then glorified Christ!
In this age primarily dominated by feelings that consequently supercedes attending ourselves to proper thought, Christ calls us to give careful consideration to His ways and let that influence our actions and faith in Him. In this passage from Mark 8:1 - 21, the disciples are rebuked for their lack of understanding and forgetfulness of Christ's doings and teachings to them, and this rebuke extends to us as well as His saints. John Musyimi in this sermon admonishes us that to apply Christ's work usefully, we must consider Him carefully! This is the seventeenth part of a sermon series on the book of Mark done by John Musyimi.
Judges 3:7 - 31 focuses on different characters during Israel's reign led by judges who God appointed, and God's sovereign hand in ruling their affairs. In this passage, we see God using the least probable instruments to achieve His ultimate end of saving His people. Though frail and least commended, it is these very characters that God chose to showcase His glory. This ultimately points forward to the ultimate judge, Jesus Christ, who came in the frailness of humanity on the earth and suffered the shame of the cross, died, was buried, and rose again, who is seated at the right of God, judging the living and the dead. Pastor Richard Chege in this sermon demonstrates that though man's hands are tainted and weak, yet through such instruments God saves and redeems!
What are we to make of life’s trying moments? What response ensues from such adversities when we face them? Do we envision God as this tyrant King who is unconcerned with our lives, and orders it in a way that we view unfair? Ruth 1 depicts this clearly, as Naomi faces one tragedy after another, which leaves her bitter. However, this is not all as it seems to be. Alfred Ndoro, seeks to show us in this sermon that amidst bitter providence, beholding God’s steadfast kindness in Christ guards the saint against blinding bitterness!
Humans are plagued with various fears in this world, which drive us to multiple responses. This is the same case in our text in Exodus 20, where we see the Israelites drawing far from God when they witnessed His tempestuous entry at Mount Sinai. However, as seen in this text, God's intent has always been to draw near His people by displaying His person to them which creates a holy and awe-filled response in them. Kelvin Mwenda, in this sermon, seeks to show us that you can fear God rightly and not be afraid of Him.
The book of Zephaniah highlights vivid explanations of the judgment that awaits all men in the great Day of the Lord; a Day that will be filled with recompense for every deed done whether good or evil. This declaration came at a time when Zephaniah was under the wicked rule of King Manasseh, and just like the meaning behind his name, Zephaniah was hidden by God's sovereign hand from any harm that would have come his way. In the same breath, in this day and age, Pastor Richard Chege aims to show us how just like the Israelites of old, each of us has committed serious offences against a mighty and holy God. We are fugitives pursued by God's wrath and justice and have nowhere to run unless it is to Him.
