Deuteronomy 19:14 tells us: You shall not move your neighbor’s boundary mark, which the ancestors have set, in your inheritance which you will inherit in the land that the Lord your God gives you to possess. God really does have a blessing for us and our adult children and one of those blessings is the privilege of being in each other’s lives. But as we round the corner of a new year we’ve learned so much about mutual respect, setting and leaving boundaries in place, and realizing there’s joy in allowing these adults we’ve raised to grow and be themselves. Join us as we talk about when our kids need us to be their “surrogate” best friend, hear verses about how we should season our words, and enjoy the warmth of grace for our kids and grace for ourselves. I think Asha’s husband said it best, Proverbs chapter 31 isn’t an exact job description for all women. However, when we read it as a letter from a mom’s heart, we see that the goal was to outline what a woman looks like who sacrifices for her family, makes her children and husband proud, and is generous of heart. Whether your adult children are young and still carving out their career or they’re established in a management role they can still be a leader that others count on. They can still approach the world with integrity and bring peace to a situation.

Proverbs 23 & 24 really gives us insight into how God desires us to show self control. Whether that’s in seeking the approval of wealthy people, desire for sex outside of marriage, or addiction to alcohol. In the end the answer still stands- we need God’s wisdom and so do our Adult children. It may be that if advice is not taken then we will all face discipline, but these tests are for our own good and our own growth.
God’s wisdom is so relevant for today. As we discuss Proverbs 21 & 22 it brings us to conversations about our children’s careers, their dedication to their health, planning for the future- including budgets, and disciplining grandchildren the way their parents want you to discipline. It started out rough, gets better, and finishes strong. I hope you take the time to listen to a discussion my boys and I had on Proverbs 17 and 18. You will hear how the importance of relationships, communication, and making God first in our lives will lead us to good things.
This chapter is fascinating. So many times we make plans for our future or decisions in the present without waiting for God to speak. Read chapter 16 of Proverbs and listen to the podcast to understand how to encourage your adult children to seek God’s will for their lives and know that He will provide a way- even when there seems to be no way.
Proverbs 15 is an in-depth study on talking and listening. A study in how we use our words to encourage or to tear down our adult children. Also there’s many verses about how we take advice and listen to others who are wiser than us.
Sometimes as parents we see our adult children surrounding themselves with foolish, lazy people or worse- people who encourage them to make bad decisions and choices. We were so overjoyed to see Proverbs 14:26-27 Whoever fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for their children it will be a refuge. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death. We also talk about fear, stress, and worry and being humble. We can encourage our adult children to build a trust relationship with God with our own actions and sometimes our words.
If you’ve ever watched one of your adult children suffer because simmering something they had really hoped would work out- did not come to pass, then you know what we’re talking about in this episode. Proverbs 13:12 is a reminder that God knows what we feel and He understands that there’s a true mind body connection in depression and disappointment. Chapter 13 is a wealth of wisdom regarding laziness, choosing who influences us, and really choosing God’s way over the world’s way.
