Description

Not Your Father's Movies is a podcast where we discuss "dad movies"! Those time-honored classics we loved watching with our fathers, and those classics we want to watch with our own kids. Every week, we break down another entry in the "dad canon," to discover what exactly constitutes a "dad movie," and if the movie we are discussing belongs in the Hall of Fame!

Welcome to our second annual Oscar's episode. We recorded this immediately after finishing the Oscars and as your timeline feeds on your social media apps have been telling you, IT WAS WILD!   We are joined by a very special guest who works in the industry himself who breaks down some of the more interesting gaffes, faux pas, and general awkward goofy Oscars.    Email us at notyourfathersmovies@gmail.com and be sure to check out our twitter @NYFMovies and follow us on Instagram. You can find our website at www.nyfmovies.com and any and all other links HERE.
Dan’s Birthday!

Dan’s Birthday!

2022-08-2401:36:22

It is Dan's First Birthday Episode! In case you thought Dan was a normal, chill dude, be ready for some surprises in this episode. He chose to discuss two very strange, existentialist movies. The 2009 film by Jaco Van Dormael, Mr. Nobody and the 2013 film by Denis Villeneuve, Enemy. These are wild, intense, very adult, and our conversations are just as wild, intense, and somewhat adult. We dive into what the heck existentialist means, whether you have to like a movie for it to impact you in a meaningful way, and other light-hearted topics. We hope you enjoy this discussion and beware spoilers! Also, please check out Sirr's Furniture! He produces some amazing pieces of woodworking and we can personally vouch for the quality of his work. Here is Vito's Second Annual Birthday Episode!   Last year, Vito wanted to cover choreography, both with musicals and fight choreography. And to cover that, Vito picked The Raid, The Raid: Berendal, and All That Jazz.   This year is totally different.   The discussion this year is computer generated images versus practical effects. Basically, we are using The Thing (1982) and The Thing (2011) to compare and contrast the two different approaches to special effects.   We hope you enjoy this discussion and beware spoilers!   Also, please check out Sirr's Furniture! He produces some amazing pieces of woodworking and we can personally vouch for the quality of his work. The third and perhaps most surprising installment in our CARS series (as in movies WITH cars, not the Cars movies) is Speed Racer! If you have seen this movie then you will understand when we warn you this episode is fast, exciting, and a little all over the place. We grapple with our opinions - is this art for art's sake? Who was the intended audience for this movie? Was there an intended audience for this movie? And that is just during lap one. Please buckle up and join us for this fun and exciting conversation. We promise if things crash and burn, the worst that can happen is you will bounce away in a soft cushy bubble. GO SPEED GO!!!! The final episode of our Chronological Crowe series has finally arrived! It has been travelling all the way from the far side of the world, survived many naval battles, and maybe even had brain surgery. We discuss many topics regarding leadership, pride, choosing the lesser of two weevils - we get deep! We can't believe how amazingly this movie has withstood the test of time. And finally, a thank you to Russell Crowe for taking us on this journey through the past 4000 years. It has been an amazing journey and I am sure we will be back to continue it with you into the 20th and 21st centuries! Hope you enjoy listening! Continuing on our journey through time, history, grit, grime, and glory - we have our next incarnation of our Gruff Australian hero... ROBIN HOOD.   Has this movie stood the test of time?   Let's be honest, I think most of us forgot about it until now. BUT NOT DAN!    Also as we've spoken about in the past our podcast has some trouble with our sense of the space-time continuum and so the future series mentioned at the end of the episode here MAY OR MAY NOT come soon.    WE SHALL SEE. Thanks so much for listening!   Also, please check out Sirr's Furniture! He produces some amazing pieces of woodworking and we can personally vouch for the quality of his work. Watch-Along: MORBIUS (2022)

Watch-Along: MORBIUS (2022)

2022-06-1401:48:46

Surprise episode everybody!   In honor of us launching our new Patreon, and in honor of our highest tier member Sirr, we decided to do a watch-along of MORBIUS, the newest Sony entry into the kinda-Spiderman-kinda-not universe! A movie well loved by Sirr that Mike and Vito had not seen, they decided to record a live, synced-up watch-along of the movie. This is an episode best played while you are also watching the movie to hear their live reactions to the events unfolding in the epic tale of the LIVING VAMPIRE!   In the future, special unorthodox episodes like this will be launched exclusively on the Patreon page. A place where we dads go to pod about whatever weird topics are on our minds, but for a limited time those episodes will live here, on our main feed for all to enjoy. Please give it a listen and let us know what you think!    Also, please check out Sirr's Furniture! He produces some amazing pieces of woodworking and we can personally vouch for the quality of his work. "Are you not entertained?!?" Russell Crowe is back for what is his most acclaimed movie, Gladiator! Not only critically acclaimed, this movie also has some deep roots in our hosts' nostalgia. We talk about our experiences as teenagers watching this movie for the first time as well as other 'swords and sandals' type movies. Are we supposed to be entertained by the heads rolling on the screen? Does this make us just as bad as the romans watching real heads roll in the coliseum? We try to tackle these and other deep questions that are enough to make our own heads roll....  So sit back, relax, run your hand through some wheat and click play on this episode. We hope you enjoy! If you are in the mood for some talk about animals, arks, and rock monsters then have we got an episode for you. As you may have guessed by the title of the episode, our new series is with the one and only Russell Crowe. He is an all star in the halls of dad movie fame and it was only a matter of time before we dove headfirst into his long and incredible filmography. So sit back, relax, and order your rock monster to push play on this week's episode. We hope you enjoy! CONTINUING our SCORSESE'S GANGSTER series, we have Marty's 2006 Boston Epic, his Sole Oscar-winning film (direction AND best picture): THE DEPARTED.   [WARNING: If you've seen this movie, you won't be surprised to hear that this episode contains EXPLICIT LANGUAGE. There are also, as usual, many spoilers. If you haven't seen the movie, STOP NOW and go watch it!]   Rejoining us for this episode we have our favorite Irishman, Pat! Or as he is better known - Paddy O'Pat. I think he may be a bigger fan of this than the last flick he joined us for (i.e. the best movie ever made, Con-Air!). This is a long one! We all have a long and important history with this movie, but somehow - after watching and rewatching over the last decade and a half - came out of this episode with new thoughts and new perspective. I think that's a sign of something great. We laugh, we cry, we learn a lot along the way. I guess. What did we learn here? I don't know. Maybe the real rats are the friends we killed along the way.   Come join us.   Email us at notyourfathersmovies@gmail.com and be sure to check out our twitter @NYFMovies and follow us on Instagram. Happy Mother's Day to all the mother's out there! As Dads, we appreciate you more than you know. Well, we have hopefully tried to show you exactly how much but you get the picture.   For this Mother's Day, in grand NYFM tradition, we are doing yet another James Cameron sequel centering on a strong female character called upon to mother in dire circumstances where the fate of all life rests squarely on her shoulders...   No, it isn't ALIENS again.   It's TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY!    The action classic with a strong family at its core holds a spot in all of our hearts and has one of our favorite tough movie moms in Sarah Connor. We talk family, we talk nostalgia, we talk the landscape of sequels and the legacy of the Terminator franchise.   Email us at notyourfathersmovies@gmail.com and be sure to check out our twitter @NYFMovies and follow us on Instagram. "Let us go on again...and...plunge into the Five Points.... Many of these pigs [wandering the streets foraging for food] live here. Do they ever wonder why their masters walk upright in lieu of going on all-fours? And why they talked instead of grunted?" ~ Charles Dickens People have been talking about the five points for a long time, and we are here to continue that conversation with Scorsese's Gangs of New York. Some of these dads really like this. Some think it's just ok. Some of us never want to see it again. We dig into all sorts of things about this movie. We talk about how it is trying to do too much, weather or not it has aged well, and how this movie is working. It's a wild conversation here.  It really doesn't feel good to be a gangster in the mid 1800s. The streets are nasty. The homes are filthy. Its a perfect situation for some dads to brawl. We hope you will join us with this absolutely crazy movie!   Email us at notyourfathersmovies@gmail.com and be sure to check out our twitter @NYFMovies and follow us on Instagram. Please consider joining our Patreon if you want to support us and you like what you hear! You can find our website at www.nyfmovies.com and any and all other links HERE.
NYFM is coming at you with a NEW RELEASE! Some of us with a lifelong passion and appreciation for everything Batman. Others just really loving Colin Farrel teaching Batman how Spanish works!   We talk about everything we loved in Matt Reeve's The Batman, as well as some critiques we don't see eye to eye on...which is great!   So please relax, press cruise control in your souped-up black Dodge Charger and enjoy the pod.   Email us at notyourfathersmovies@gmail.com and be sure to check out our twitter @NYFMovies and follow us on Instagram. You can find our website at www.nyfmovies.com, our Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/notyourfathersmovies, and all other links HERE.
A NEW SERIES IS HERE!!! We are tackling SCORCESE'S GANGSTERS and the first movie is 1990's cinematic masterpiece, the must-see event of your life, possibly (one) of the greatest films ever made. It's about betrayal, community, family, violence, love, sin, redemption...everything a good movie is about!   We talk about Scorcese and set the groundwork for our series, we talk his Catholicism and guilt and sin. You know, the good stuff. Even more than that, we talk about those of us who finally experienced this for the first time and those of us who have seen this 10-odd times.   Email us at notyourfathersmovies@gmail.com and be sure to check out our twitter @NYFMovies and follow us on Instagram. You can find our website at www.nyfmovies.com and any and all other links HERE.
Here we are. Still talking about Time Loops. Still repeating that idea over and over. This time though, we are doing something much more recent and slightly pandemic related. It's Palm Springs everyone!   We talk how it ties into our series as a whole, we talk about Andy Samberg we talk about how this relates (or not) to specific generations, and we also talk quite but about RAUNCHINESS! No, we aren't raunchy here, but we talk about it because we all have kids. Do we ever want to watch raunchy comedies with them?   Join us on this loop-the-loop of time loop adventures and we hope you enjoy the ride!   Email us at notyourfathersmovies@gmail.com and be sure to check out our twitter @NYFMovies and follow us on Instagram. You can find our website at www.nyfmovies.com and any and all other links HERE.
For our third TIME LOOPS episode, we bring you EDGE Of TOMORROW, the alien war movie starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt! This was a fun one as it is a Cruise that he doesn't play often and it is one of a few very unique and original sci-fi movies that has come out in the last ten years.   We talk how it ties into our series as a whole, we talk about different versions and we talk about what exactly makes this summer popcorn extravaganza a DAD-MOVIE!   Email us at notyourfathersmovies@gmail.com and be sure to check out our twitter @NYFMovies and follow us on Instagram. You can find our website at www.nyfmovies.com and any and all other links HERE.
For our second foray into time loops, it's ABOUT TIME! This charming rom-com about a boy who discovers he can time travel by just thinking really hard about it is one of the more touching and even at times, dare I say, controversial pick amongst us all. Unfortunately, Vito and Mike were unable to join the discussion but Jesse and Dan are joined by Jesse's brother Austin!   This movie and episode hold a big place in our hearts just as a podcast as over a year ago, we attempted to do this episode for the first time. After three hours and many broken audio files, we called it quits, the first and only time we have ever given up on an episode and it was lost to time. But we knew it could never stay gone! Maybe at some point in the future we will dig up the many corrupted and broken files and cobble together a Frankenstein version of that episode, but for now listen in as the guys do a deep-dive on one of the more charming and confounding movies we have run across.    Email us at notyourfathersmovies@gmail.com and be sure to check out our twitter @NYFMovies and follow us on Instagram. You can find our website at www.nyfmovies.com and any and all other links HERE.
Can there ever be a song more repetitive than Cher and Sonny's voices at 6AM in the morning?   Yes there can   Then put your little hand in mine There ain't no hill or mountain we can't climb Babe I got you babe, I got you babe Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don't forget your booties 'cause it's cooooold out there today. It's coooold out there every day. What is this, Miami Beach?   This isn't Miami Beach, this is NYFM! here are 4 dads ready to go and talk about this comedy that loves to repeat itself. This comedy that loves to repeat itself. To repeat itself. Oh no Join us as we once again journey into the jungle of dad and discuss this wacky, high concept, silly, and romantic comedy.  In this very repetitive episode, we talk about many things. Things like showing children images of suicide. Asking ourselves what we would do in Phil's situation. Also, is Phil's journey inevitable? Naturally we also talk about monkeys.   Email us at notyourfathersmovies@gmail.com and be sure to check out our twitter @NYFMovies and follow us on Instagram. You can find our website at www.nyfmovies.com and any and all other links HERE.
