In 2019 Josiah Martin took over his family’s business, Martin’s Pretzels, he was a senior in high school. In 2020 a 5 year plan to move the corporate office and facility happened sooner than expected. It was a dream come true until 2020 turned out to be extraordinary in more ways than one. In addition to dealing with new challenges brought on by the pandemic, only 8 weeks after the new facility opened it burned to the ground with absolutely no explanation.  What could have been a throw in the towel moment only strengthened Josiah’s resolve to grow the family business and continue a legacy in one of the greatest cities on earth.  Listen to today’s episode of The Nothing But Good Podcast to hear: [1:30] how Martin’s Pretzels are one of the last bakeries in the country to make handmade pretzels [2:30] how Martin’s Pretzels came to be a New York City staple [4:00] how appearances on TV shows affect sales [5:20] what hearth baked means and why it matters to Martin’s Pretzels [7:15] the ingredients used in Martin’s Pretzels - it’s the same recipe they’ve used since 1935 [9:10] how Josiah decided to take over the family business [11:20] why 2020 was an extraordinary year in more ways than one [13:30] what it looks like to rebuild a business after massive tragedy [15:50] what made Josiah feel like Martin’s Pretzels was a calling on his life Links from Episode 10 of The Nothing But Good Podcast: Order your pretzels and martinpretzels.com Add Maritn’s Pretzels to your Oh Goodie box!  Quotes from Episode 10 of The Nothing But Good Podcast: “Hearth baked means that it’s baked on a stone… most companies will use a conveyor belt which is just a regular wire mesh belt, but ours is made on a stone which has a complete science behind it, between how it’s baked and the textures that it make… and there’s a unique flavor to it that really you can’t duplicate with any other type of machine.” [5:20] Josiah Martin “Obviously we’re handmade; it’s our brand, so that’s never going to change. Our slogan is ‘handmade forever’ and so it’s something that’s very much a part of who we are.” [7:00] Josiah Martin “Handmade stuff is just the best” [9:00] Josiah Martin “I feel like a lot of companies, if you look back in their story, they all have that moment where they like took out the extra dollar, or they put in all their money, or something drastic happened and that was really like the catalyst for the future of the company.” [14:20] Josiah Martin
Do you think a snack can change the world?  It’s crazy to think that such a small thing can have such a big impact. That a decision today can help other people’s tomorrows. Or that something you can hold, can hold the future of the planet. But that’s exactly what Claudia Goldfarb,  the Founder and CEO of Sow Good Incorporated believes.  Through their freeze dried snacks and smoothies, Sow Good is on a mission to revolutionize food. To fight waste, malnutrition, and food insecurity with a snack that stays good, tastes good, and does good. By marrying ethical sourcing with the magic of freeze drying, they are able to support the health and wellness of communities, people, and the planet. So it’s super healthy and super great for you and across all of our product lines one of the things that we were committed to, iis no preservatives so our products are preserved through the technology not through any sort of additives.” [15:50] Claudia Goldfarb Links from Today’s Episode: Order your freeze dried snacks at thisissowgood.com Listen to the Good Stories Podcast See what’s inside this month’s Oh Goodie! As you’ll hear me say in today’s interview with Chris Forte, the co-founder of Why Bars, I see a LOT of bars come through my office. Not only did I grow up in the vending industry but I’ve worked in it the last 15 years. There are few that intrigue me the way that Why Bars did when I first discovered them. I love their clean ingredients list, I love that when I bit in to my first bar that it tasted like food and not just like a slimy date bar, and I love how filling it was. Sine then it’s become a staple that I keep in my car and in my office, so that I can grab one quickly if I’m running low on fuel. In today’s conversation Chris and I talk about how Why Bars came to be; it involves a chance encounter on a snowy day which seems like the perfect kind of story to tell this time of year. We also talk about how Why Bars serve a real purpose, why you should consider staying away from other types of bars and what it means to be a spiritual entrepreneur. 0:28 what it means to be a spiritual entrepreneur 1:20 how Chris and Chef Jay met 4:40 why Chris originally gave up eating bars 8:09 the purpose behind Why Bars 10:00 how the bar was named 12:03 what Chris means by "one bar" at a time and how it serves as the mantra behind Why Bars Thank you for listening to this episode of the Nothing But Good Podcast.
