In today's episode of New Grad to ICU we talk about ways to practice safety with medication and how to help prevent medication errors. I have had quite a few nursing students and new grads reach out to me regarding the RaDonda Vaught Trial and express how they are now anxious to enter the workforce and have something similar happen to them. You all have the tools to help prevent errors like this from happening and hopefully listening to this episode will help you realize ways that you can practice safely.

In this episode, we go over what a balloon pump is and what it does for our cardiac patients. Balloon pumps have become more common in many different ICUs and not just the CCUs or CVICUs. This is a great overview of what the balloon pump is and what it does but it is not a replacement for the instruction that you will get in your facility. Always follow your hospital's policy and procedures.

In this episode, we explore how you can determine your patient's fluid status in any situation. This ranges from patients that only have a blood pressure cuff to patients that have a full-on Swan-Ganz hemodynamic setup. After listening to this episode you will have several techniques to use in your practice to help you and your other clinicians determine if your patient will be fluid responsive.

This is all publicly available information but I do not state the RNs name or where this took place. You won't believe some of the things you hear!
In this episode, we go over the ins and outs of managing medications that are usually titrated. This includes concentrations, setup, and initiation. You'll also learn how to create your own IV manifold if you do not have any available to you!

What if I told you that stressful events could cause the heart to literally be stunned? Well, that is exactly what Broken Heart Syndrome (otherwise known as Apical Ballooning Syndrome or Takotsubo) is and in this episode, we go over what (little) we know about it and how it is managed.
In this episode, we dive into what mean arterial pressure actually is and why it is so highly regarded in the ICUs (especially the CVICU!).
