In this episode, Glyn Fussell is joined by Dame Sally Dicketts, former Chief Executive of Activate Learning, leadership coach and experienced values-led leader, to explore what it really means to coach leaders well. Leadership can be rewarding, but it can also be lonely. Behind the responsibility, decision-making and expectations, leaders are often carrying significant emotional load while navigating uncertainty, complexity and constant change. Coaching can provide a rare confidential space to step back, think honestly and explore not only what a leader is doing, but how they are showing up. Drawing on their experiences of both leadership and coaching, Glyn and Sally explore the importance of trust, challenge, listening and human connection – and why good leadership coaching is about much more than simply solving the problem in front of you. What You'll Learn: Why leadership can feel lonely – and the role coaching can play in creating space to think How coaches can balance compassion, challenge and honest reflection Why the emotional load of leadership matters The importance of exploring the "how" of leadership, not just the "what" How coaches can help leaders recognise patterns, blind spots and the shadow they cast Why listening, vulnerability and acknowledging anxiety can be powerful leadership practices The difference between coaching and mentoring when working with senior leaders What leaders can do to get the most from a coaching relationship Why chairs and CEOs can benefit from coaching in different ways Ultimately, the conversation comes back to a simple but powerful idea: effective leadership coaching combines compassion with challenge – and honesty with kindness. Imposter syndrome is defined as "a psychological experience in which a person suffers from feelings of intellectual and/or professional fraudulence." When it shows up it can severely hamper the individual, impede performance, and destroy self worth. In this episode, Glyn is in conversation with Sonia Mayor, a somatic therapist and leadership developer, and her client, Jo Cowling, People Director at Taylors of Harrogate, to unpack the layered reality of imposter syndrome - from both sides of the helping relationship. Together, Glyn, Sonia and Jo explore how imposter syndrome shows up in leaders and why compassionate curiosity, not problem-solving, is a more liberating response when imposter syndrome does appear. We all probably have aspects of ourself that we feel the need to hide from others in order to fit in and feel accepted. These elements of ourself can be referred to as our shadow and it can follow us around, taking us into the tricky realms of shame and guilt. In this episode, Glyn Fussell and Marion Ragaliauskas explore ways of identifying, accepting and embracing our shadow. They explore whether there is another, creative way of working with these parts of ourself: how we can recognize what triggers our shadow and not let it create tension in our coaching work; how to channel our shadow energy for the good rather than the negative.
