The Dáil has heard today that the people in Sligo whose homes are impacted by Pyrite are not pretending that their lives have been severely impacted by the condition. Sligo Leitrim Deputy, Martin Kenny made the comments during a debate on a motion seeking to reform the defective concrete redress scheme. The Sinn Fein TD says that only five people in Sligo have been able to submit applications to the scheme. The Leitrim TD says the scheme is set up in such a way that it is blocking people from receiving redress
Gardai in Donegal have sounded warnings over bogus tradespeople operating in the County.There have been several reports made to Gardai over the last 24 hours.If follows similar incidents in County Sligo earlier this year.Divisional Crime Prevention Officer Fergus McGroary has this advice:

The Government has been accused of all talk and no action in assisting North Leitrim residents during and after severe weather events.Storm Amy left a large number of people in the area without power for several days, less than a year after the devastating impact of Storm Eowyn.Questions have now been raised over whether enough work has been done in clearing trees too close to powerlines while there's also concern over a lack of community hubs readily available for problem areas.Independent Cllr Felim Gurn is questioning if lessons have been learned at all:
Better pay and conditions are the main areas that must be addressed in order for the defence forces to address the current recruitment and retention crisis the Army, and navy and air core are currently facing.That's according to the Sligo Leitrim Deputy Martin Kenny.The Sinn Fein TD made the comments as the issue of Cadet pay and the army's ongoing recruitment crisis will dominate today's RACO conference in County Meath.Delegates are expected to head that cadets can be paid below minimum wage for the first two years of their career and earn 40 per cent less than their enlisted colleagues.Speaking to Ocean FM news Deputy Kenny says how the recent increased budget allocation for defence is spent will determine if more people will sign up for a career in these areas.
A regional MEP has called on the government to apply state funding fairly across the North West.The issue stems from an EU test for SME and social enterprise aid not being implemented correctly.The undertaking in difficulty aid may at times not be given to companies that rely on volunteer donations.Independent Ireland MEP Ciaran Mulooly says not-for-profit companies in the region should not be denied funding due to the test.
A local Fianna Fáil TD says it's imperative that grass roots members are given more of a say in the selection of future Presidential candidates. Sligo Leitrim, Deputy Eamon Scanlon proposed the move at a recent Fianna Fáil Parliamentary Meeting which was called to discuss the withdrawal of Jim Gavin from the Presidential Election. The Sligo TD says that grass root members currently feel disenfranchised he says lessons must be learned and that mistakes made in the selection of the former All Ireland winning manger can't happen again.
32 properties in Sligo and Donegal have been investigated by councils as suspected illegal short-term lets in the last three years. In the majority of cases, the only enforcement action taken was the issuing of a warning letter to owners. Some received enforcement notices threatening legal action if they did not comply. There were 14 properties investigated in Sligo and 18 in Donegal investigated between 2023 and 2025. None were investigated in Leitrim. Dublin City Council had the highest number of investigations, at 907, followed by Cork City Council with 202 - according to an investigation by the Irish Independent. Leitrim independent Councillor James Gilmartin says the figures are a little surprising in relation to Leitrim and claims that with housing in such demand the situation need to be more closely examined
A Sligo Councillor has claimed that the currently road safety improvement works that are underway at the Aughamore-Walsh in Sligo will help top reduce the likelihood of a serious accident taking place at the location. Inside the last week commenced on safety works at a dangerous junction at Aughamore. Cllr Thomas Walsh says the junction located along the R287 is extremely dangerous and safety issues have been raised in relation to it for a number of years. €25,000 was allocated for the works earlier this year Cllr Walsh say work will focus on improving sight lines on the L-36025 leading to the Holywell and on the L-3603 leading to Ballisodare.
A Leitrim Councillor says alarm bells are ringing for the general public if not the government over the Government over the recent number of people forced to spend time on trollies in the region's Hospitals yesterday. The INMO claimed that over 70 people were on trollies yesterday between University Hospital Sligo and Letterkenny University Hospital. Another Hospital in the Saolta Hospital group, University Hospital Galway has 52 people on trollies which resulted in it being the second most over-crowded hospital in the Country behind University Hospital Limerick which has 100 people waiting for beds. Leitrim Councillor Padraig Fallon says the current situation is concerning:
A Sligo councillor is calling for a fully resourced Early Intervention Youth Mental Health Centre for the region. Cllr Edel McSharry says Sligo-Leitrim is one of the few areas without a dedicated service like Jigsaw or Mindspace. She says the current limited model is not enough to meet rising demand, and wants direct referral access for GPs, schools and families. Speaking to Ocean FM News, Cllr Edel McSharry says young people need timely, community-based supports not long CAMHS waiting lists.

Fourteen greyhounds were killed and 20 injured at Lifford Greyhound Stadium in the first eight months of 2025, new figures have revealed.The data, obtained through a Dáil question, shows a rise in deaths at the Donegal track compared to all of 2024.Campaigners say public funding of nearly €20 million a year is propping up a cruel and unsustainable industry.Speaking to Ocean FM News, Nuala Donlon from Greyhound Action Ireland says the government must phase out funding and end this suffering.
Motorists in Sligo are displeased with what they call unneccessarily low speed limits in the county.The old N4 stretch from Castlebaldwin to Collooney, now designated as the L3700, has gone from a 100 kilometre per hour speed limit to a sixty kilometre per hour route.Local Fianna Fail Cllr Liam Brennan says that local motorists are getting penalised.
A new Greenway across the North West has received a further boost.Phase 3 of the Sligo Leitrim and Northern Counties Greenway is set to begin soon.This phase is set to involve consultations with landowners on the path across Sligo and Leitrim before work begins.Cllr Marie Casserly has outlined the next steps for the Greenway:
Five ambassadors from Ukraine, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Poland visited Sligo yesterday for discussions with Sligo County Council at County Hall.They spoke about current conflict fears in Europe and showed strong support for Ukraine.The visit also highlighted the close ties between Sligo and the Eastern European communities living here.Speaking to Ocean FM News, Cathaoirleach Dónal Gilroy said Sligo stands proudly with Ukraine and its neighbours in these uncertain times.
