Oh, You're In A Band?

Taking a slight detour this week from the album theme, we're kicking back with a good ole catching up chat this week with the one and only Riley Wilkes. Hear the stories of her musical background, early days of playing for T3, and what some people do and don't consider social media and a lot more!

Take a journey down memory lane, mine not yours, as we take a look into some college bands from the pacific northwest from around 2005-2008. Hear some of the bands that inspired some of the questions that led to this podcast. We go down a rabbit hole and listen to some bands you've never heard of, but you really should including: Love You Long Time, National Holiday, Preston Pugmire, Victim Effect, In:Aviate, Oh, Doctor, and Children of Nova.

This week we brought back Jezy Park of Jessica Seven to talk about their debut/not debut album: Dragon Chaser. We talked about where he got his ideas and motivation to record on his own, what attracted band members and fans to the music, and what it takes to sit down and record a song all on your own. Always a fantastic conversation, always a good time.

This week I've got Travis and Tracy Haley of Burning The Past here to talk about their album Chasing Ghosts as well as a bit of a more in depth history of the band, themes, and decisions that led to their debut album and their plans for the future.

Jay Jackson returns for his third appearance to talk about both of his albums 'Clockwork Neon' and 'Envy The Faithful'. We talk about the differences of the sound of both albums and the changes that occurred between the two albums that lead to the final sound of Envy The Faithful and beyond.

The one, the only, the legendary Bill Keller is my guest this week. I've known Bill for over 15 years now and he's been nothing but a steady dependable friend who's got lots of crazy stories to tell and tell them we do. Lots of laughter and stubbornness from this episode I tell you.

This is a special episode of the pod, not a live interview, not a current audio, but a throwback episode to once again celebrate my good friend Derek White, who is no longer with us. This audio comes cobbled together from 2 separate episodes of a college radio show we hosted back in 2007-2008 called the Random Arse Radio Show. It's not necessarily about music per say, although we do talk about it a little, but its just some fun forgotten chatter with one of my best friends who I miss very much to celebrate his birthday.

This week we talk about his Valentine's Day 'Tuba-grams', what its like to wrangle a 13 piece band, and what makes the difference in a band when you do and don't know your musical counterparts.

One of my oldest friends in the world its Dr. Nicholas Mortensen III in the flesh. Finally had a moment to sit down with Nick and just fall right back into the ridiculousness that we used to get into while we try to uncover his musical history, what drives him to make cool music, and just how he has made it this far with those stubby little sausages he calls his fingers.

Its a Resident Hero reunion! Back after an over 10 years hiatus the band is back together fresh from a reunion show a few weeks back. I've got the gentlemen Ryan White, Jay Warren, and Luke Agajanian talking about whats its like to be back together after all these years, a few hypothetical ideas of what would have happened had they never broken up, how they wrote all their tunes and filled such a huge sound despite being a trio, as well as talk a little about the future of Resident Hero and everything in-between. It's a super sized season 2 premiere and it was a blast hearing these gents rip on each other once again.

In part 2 of our chat with Jay Warren listen as we start to get sleepy after talking for 4 hours and this podcast rages on after 2am.  Jay talks about life in the country music world and all the fasinating places its taken him, the difference in working with record labels being the artist vs the help, as well as what its like to record an album with a big time famous producer who puts Jay in his place.

In part 1 of the 2-part 'season finale' we chatted with the man, the myth, the legend, the one and only Jay Warren, former drummer of Resident Hero and amazing super drummer of the country stars. In this part we go over Jay's very extensive and fascinating music history from punk bands in his home town of Austin Tx, to getting a high class education from a music school in New York, to reaching near the top of the mountain with Resident Hero in Los Angeles and everything in between. Jay is a master storyteller and its full of interesting little side notes and hilarious live show antics.  

On a slightly different change of pace, this week I spoke with Ryan White formerly of the bands Resident Hero and Birds of New York to give us a slightly different perspective of a music career beyond the local scene. We talked about the ups and downs of Resident Hero, touring with Flyleaf, and even shared a bunch of funny and embarrassing tour stories. All for the sake of music justice. Sweet sweet sweaty musical justice. 

This week I had spoke to one of the few people on this podcast that are still performing live and also somebody I don't know super well: Ren Gudino! Thats ok, because the more we spoke the more I found we had in common. We talk a bit about struggling with imposter syndrome when it comes to not being sure of all the technical aspects of music, not wanting to be that headlining band who goes on at 10:30 because we'd rather be in bed, and we commiserate on poor choices in band names that cause for concern in the general public. 

This week I had a fancy chat with the very talented Mr. Travis Haley of Burning The Past. Travis has been in a ton of bands over the years and equally proficient in a different instrument in every one of them. We got caught up to speed on how many bands he's been in, where his musical passion comes from, and even get to the bottom of this idea that he's "always angry and unapproachable" at shows which really couldn't be further than the truth. Also, was he mad a Ryan for ragging on him in a previous episode? We'll seeeeeeeeeee....

Even though its been well documented that he sucks, this week I sat down with my sworn enemy Jameson Burton and talk a little bit about his interesting musical history, what its like to teach a music class over zoom, and get to the bottom of this 'Jameson Sucks' business once and for all. Also, we briefly mention about how he almost died while eating lunch right before this podcast. 

This week I sat down with the notorious Jezy Park of Jessica 7 fame. We talk about what is and isn't inspiring the next generation of musicians, the storied history of how Jessica 7 came to be, and the evolution of what it means to pick up and instrument to keeping that passion a number of years later.
