A special preview of our new series - search for Jam Tomorrow in your favourite podcast app or visit https://kite.link/JTS1 How did Britain’s dreams of a new postwar world go unfulfilled? And what does that mean for us today? In the first of a new documentary series from the makers of Oh God, What Now?, Ros Taylor looks at the legacy of the War itself. Ιdeals of the Blitz Spirit and dreams of wartime heroism still shape everything from pop culture and entertainment to the Brexit debate. But the truth of the War is more complex and less comforting. What will it take for us to see the Second World War – and ourselves – clearly? •  “If you’re going to have a foundation myth it might as well be one where you destroy Nazism.” – Al Murray •  “If the response to air raid wasn’t stoicism there was a fear that morale would break down.” – Lucy Noakes •  “The Keep Calm And Carry On poster was designed for a type of war that never arrived.” – Henry Irvine •  “Britain went into the war not alone but at the head of the world’s biggest empire… When Britain went to war, so did vast part of the world.” – Lucy Noakes   Written and presented by Ros Taylor. Produced by Jade Bailey. Voiceovers by Imogen Robertson. Original music by Dubstar. Lead producer: Jacob Jarvis. Group Editor: Andrew Harrison. Jam Tomorrow is a Podmasters production. Who let the flags out? We look at the mania for running a Cross of St George or Union Jack up the nearest lamp-post, who’s fomenting it and why it’s smart but dangerous politics for the far-right. Meanwhile Nigel Farage launches his completely uncosted, unrealistic, fantasy plan for mass deportations. Are the press so completely on the Reform bandwagon that they’ll just let it go unquestioned? Our special guest David Klemperer puts the case for compulsory voting and why it solves more problems than you think. And in the Extra Bit for Patreon people: TfL and the Tories team up against the scourge of people playing music on their phone speakers on public transport. Will they succeed – and what would we ban if we could? ESCAPE ROUTES  • David recommends Love and Death in Long Island by Gilbert Adair.  • Marie recommends French Exit by Patrick deWitt.  • Hannah recommends Evenings And Weekends by Oisin McKenna.  • Ros recommends A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Bridge Theatre (but it’s finished and you can’t see it).  When you buy books through our affiliate bookshop, you help fund the podcast by earning us a small commission for every sale. Bookshop.org’s fees help support independent bookshops too. • Advertisers! One of the best-liked MPs in Westminster, Chris Bryant has led an incident-packed life as the title of his new autobiography A Life And A Half  proves. In a frank, astonishing, sometimes dark but also very funny interview he explains how he went from a painful childhood to becoming an Anglican priest to winning a very traditional South Wales seat as an out gay man. From early encounters with Boris Johnson to bizarre stories in Brussels, it’s one of the most remarkable interviews we’ve done. “My mum looked after Shirley Bassey’s wigs, which may explain my sexuality,” he tells Seth Thévoz and Marie le Conte.  • Don’t forget you can watch full video on Spotify.  Warning: This episode contains discussion of sexual abuse which some listeners may find difficult. ESCAPE ROUTES  • Chris saw the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Edinburgh Festival.  • Marie recommends The Door by Magda Szabó. • Seth has been watching old episodes of Doctor Who with Tom Baker, some of which were good... ... and some of which weren’t. It seems like there’s no end to the horrors in Gaza, the torment of the Israeli hostages and Netanyahu’s expansionism. And the more events escalate, the less we understand this nightmare. Today we’re joined by UCL politics professor Julie Norman to take as sober a look as possible at how the Middle East has changed after the October 7 attacks and Israel’s devastating response. Is Netanyahu prolonging the war to say in power? Does it fit the description of a genocide? And what happens next? Plus we have excellent questions on this topic in a special But Your Emails.  This episode was recorded before the anti-war protests in Israel over the weekend. • Don’t forget you can watch full video of our panel editions on Spotify.  If ever we needed ESCAPE ROUTES it’s this week… • Julie recommends Bruce Springsteen’s Born To Run on its 50th anniversary.  • Raf recommends The Genius Myth by Helen Lewis.  • Andrew recommends Alien Earth on Disney+.  When you buy books through our affiliate bookshop you help fund the podcast by earning us a small commission for every sale. Bookshop.org’s fees help support independent bookshops too. • Get our exclusive NordVPN deal here https://nordvpn.com/ohgodwhatnow. Ed Davey’s reborn Lib Dems are on a 100-year high with 72 MPs and a shot at becoming the conscience of progressive Britain. So why do Reform get all the coverage? He joins our regulars to talk about fighting Farage, Labour’s travails, the war on cruelty in politics, why all those General Election surfing and bungee stunts worked, and what the Lib Dems can get done in Parliament. “We’ve been the best opposition,” he tells Alison Phillips, Matt Green and Hannah Fearn. Plus, Donald Trump’s Jeffrey Epstein meltdown continues. He’s now suing Rupert Murdoch over an article published by the Wall Street Journal last week linking him to the disgraced financier. Keir Starmer suspended 4 ‘persistent rebels’ on Wednesday. Clive Lewis was not on that list, despite his many disagreements with his party, but he is on our podcast this week. We sat down with the MP for Norwich South to discuss those suspensions, why Labour's not delivering on its promise for ‘change’, and why the UK should move back closer to Europe. Plus, campaign group More in Common’s latest study categorises the electorate into seven groups. Is it useful? And who are these types of studies really for? Plus, is Britain’s justice system broken beyond repair? Jury-less trials are on the horizon but are they the fix that an impoverished, dysfunctional courts system needs? Fear of Farage

Fear of Farage

2025-07-0801:06:172

Fragmentation special! It’s all kicking off on the right and the left. Are our panic-stricken political classes talking Britain into a Farage premiership just by making it sound inevitable? And could Zarah Sultana’s (possibly premature) launch of a new party of the anti-war left turn into a genuine threat to Labour? We’re calling it CorbTana. It’s going to catch on. Really.  ESCAPE ROUTES • Hannah recommends Couples Therapy on BBC iPlayer.  • Jonn recommends the US version of Ghosts.  • Raf saw War at the A Love Supreme festival.  • Andrew saw Goat and Infinity Song at Glastonbury.  www.patreon.com/ohgodwhatnow Presented by Andrew Harrison with Rafael Behr, Jonn Elledge, and Hannah Fearn. What better way for Labour to celebrate a year in power than with a humiliating climbdown on welfare? Political historian Steven Fielding joins the panel to discuss rebellions, “Austerity PSD”, and how Starmer and Reeves can make Year Two better than Year One. Plus, after the anti-IDF rants by punk band Bob Vylan at Glastonbury, has the festival really become the antisemitic “hatefest” its critics claim? Unlike most of them, our own Andrew Harrison was actually there… And in the Extra Bit for Patreon supporters, is far-right ideologue Matthew Goodwin serious when he says he wants to be Reform UK’s Home Secretary, or just waffling to sell his Substack? • Listen to Why? with Emma Kennedy: Could we make a real Jurassic Park?  ESCAPE ROUTES • Rachel has been bingeing on Wimbledon.  • Jonn has been reading Trespasses by Louise Kennedy. • Steven has been listening to the title track of Close To The Edge by Yes. • Alison is very excited about the Women’s Euros.  • Back us on Patreon for ad-free listening, bonus materials and more.  Presented by Alison Phillips with Rachel Cunliffe and Jonn Elledge. Why is that scouse bloke blaming everybody else for Labour being shit? Just because his mum and dad voted Labour, it doesn't mean that everybody else has to too. Starmer was given the country on a plate and still managed to fuck everything up in double quick time. It's almost as if he conned his way into power to serve the interests of the status quo. If the presenter wants to blame someone for Reform's popularity he should blame Starmer, even if it upsets his mum and dad.

Re: your discussion about medical assistance in dying (MAID), I don't know where Marie Le Conte gets her information about Canada's MAID laws, but her description of people accessing MAID because they can't afford to feed themselves is the worst sort of disinformation. Please inform yourselves - perhaps start with https://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/health-services-benefits/medical-assistance-dying.html. An apology would be appropriate.

Ayesha and Naomi had some good points to make but there was a disappointing failure to joint the dots in this discussion. OGWN really need a police consultant to help them through this maze. I am happy to help.
