Hello and welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries: Backroads. Join us tonight for a dive into early spiritualism in Ohio as we discuss the Koon's family spirit room. Family patriarch Jonathan Koons built a cabin on their rural land in Athens County, Ohio and dubbed it their "spirit room". Visitors came from all over the nation to have an otherworldly experience. As the crowds would gather, the lights would darken and the spirits would begin. Soon musical instruments would begin to play seemingly on their own, luminous hands would fly around the room and the show would begin. What happens next? Tune in and find out! During World War II and again at the start of the Cold War, the military called on civilians to staff thousands of posts to help keep a watch out for enemy aircraft. The program was called the Ground Observer Corps, and by 1952, Ohio had nearly 200 community stations, manned 24/7 by retirees, housewives, teenagers and other patriotic Americans. Not surprisingly, having so many trained eyes on the sky resulted in many reports of unidentified objects, several of which were verified by air force jets sent to check them out. www.ohiomysteries.com feedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Additional music: New Horizon - Aderin; Audionautix- The Great Unknown; The Great Phospher- Daniel Birch Learn more about your ad choices. A fatality is such a rare event at a theme park or fair, we could only find 17 deaths in Ohio over the course of 150 years. In this episode, we revisit the worst days at Kings Island, Cedar Point, the Ohio State Fair and local county fairs. www.ohiomysteries.com feedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Additional music: New Horizon - Aderin; Audionautix- The Great Unknown; The Great Phospher- Daniel Birch Learn more about MONETARY GOLD. In 1884 during the Hocking Valley Coal Strike, a small group of miners shoved blazing carts into several mine shafts. Left undiscovered for several days, it grew into a fire that would not be stopped, fed by unlimited fuel and thousands of oxygen-rich fissures in the bedrock. The fire still burns today, seen as puffs of smoke through the floor of Wayne National Forest. This is the story of how that 140-year conflagration changed the topography, the lives and the future of a once-thriving coal region. www.ohiomysteries.com feedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Additional music: New Horizon - Aderin; Audionautix- The Great Unknown; The Great Phospher- Daniel Birch Learn more about MONETARY GOLD Learn more about your ad choices. Vortex of evil- it sure felt like it growing up there that year, too. I've always felt that Kathy Menendez got blown off because she was "an habitual runaway" by the people who were supposed to get justice no matter who she was. I don't care how much of a bratty kid somebody was, they don't deserve to die like that. As a kid, I always assumed "found naked, beaten, and strangled" was code for "raped and killed". I wonder if they even bothered with a rape kit. Her poor mother. I also have doubts about there being a sniper. Local rumor is that it was a specific hit, meant to send a message to Portage County Sheriff's Department. Poor Sarah Boehm. My gut says her dad did it. Killed her in PA because he was afraid she'd tell her counselor he'd been abusing her, then when Kathy turned up, it's only what, a 2, 3 hour drive, to dispose of Sarah's body in the same beaten, strangled, naked condition? Good way to muddle the investigation. It may have worked. He later plead guilty to, what was it,

What are the odds of Lester Eubanks, a repeat rapist, having never raped again? Pretty slim, I'd say. Here's hoping they get his DNA and actually get him.
