A century ago, Niagara Falls tourists enjoyed a winter attraction - ice forming a bridge over the river beneath the falls. When the ice broke free in 1912, a Cleveland youth turned from safety to help a struggling couple. Crowds were helpless to stop the ice floe from sailing them into crushing rapids. But where did the river hide their bodies? www.ohiomysteries.com feedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Learn more about your ad choices. From late 1978 to late 1979, central Ohio was rocked by 10 murders that defied explanation - men and women shot dead randomly in their homes and doing everyday things. But a mistake with a credit card finally identified the killers as a pair of Columbus brothers, Gary and Thaddeus Lewingdon. Because all their victims were shot in the head with the same gun, they came to be called the .22 Caliber Killers. www.ohiomysteries.com feedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Additional music: New Horizon - Aderin; Audionautix- The Great Unknown; The Great Phospher- Daniel Birch Learn more about your ad choices. Ohio has been a major player in ufology since the modern era of UFOs began in 1947. But is it possible that the Buckeye state's involvement with flying saucers and aliens goes back even further, all the way back to the 1930s? Does Ohio have ties to another crashed UFO and aliens that happened long before the famous UFO crash at Roswell, New Mexico? Join Dan and Mike, along with a special guest, as they discuss this incredible possibility. In the early 1800s, Ashtabula shipbuilders lost nearly a dozen vessels in about 15 years, leading the superstitious industry to wonder if there was a curse on the port. We tell the stories behind five of those lost ships, including the Superior, which met a diabolical end, and the Elisha Whittlesey, upended in a terrible gale. The other three - the Tempest, the Elizabeth and the LaFayette Packet - were wrecked with Capt. Benjamin Napier at the helm. We also digress into the life of Napier, a man admired but mostly feared after he later became Lake Erie's land pirate, attempting to lay claim to Kelley's Island and kick off its inhabitants. www.ohiomysteries.com feedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Additional music: New Horizon - Aderin; Audionautix- The Great Unknown; The Great Phospher- Daniel Birch Learn more about your ad choices. We delve into Hawkins' early influences, his impact on the music industry, and the enduring mystery surrounding his life. From his electrifying live shows to his lesser-known collaborations and the lasting influence on artists like Alice Cooper and Tom Waits, this episode paints a vivid portrait of a man who defied categorization and left an indelible mark on the world of music. In 1864, a Tennessee slave named Jordan Anderson was freed when Union troops camped on the plantation of his master during the Civil War, and Jordan and his wife and children moved to Dayton, Ohio to start their lives as free people. A year later, Jordan heard from his former master, Col. PH Anderson, who asked him to come back to the plantation because the farm was failing and he was desperately needed. Jordon responded to Anderson in a letter that became a media sensation, while also offering a peek into a life and time. www.ohiomysteries.com feedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Additional music: New Horizon - Aderin; Audionautix- The Great Unknown; The Great Phospher- Daniel Birch Learn more about your ad choices. Terri Hastings was confident her 17-year-old son, Tyler Anderson, would be able to work through his troubled teen years. After all, she knew a family member who was scared straight by a stint in a juvenile detention facility and went on to have a successful family and career. Tyler was to be sentenced on a breaking and entering charge in May of 2012; maybe this was lesson he needed to understand consequences. But Tyler never got the chance. He was gunned down the day before his hearing, and Akron police say they know exactly who did it. UNRESOLVED is collaboration between Ohio Mysteries and the Akron Beacon Journal. In 1884, 10,000 Cincinnatians filled the streets around the Hamilton County Courthouse to protest a jury's decision to convict a cold-blooded killer with the lesser crime of manslaughter. What happened next took the lives of 56 people, sent hundreds more to area hospitals, and left a courthouse and most county records in ruins. www.ohiomysteries.com feedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Additional music: New Horizon - Aderin; Audionautix- The Great Unknown; The Great Phospher- Daniel Birch Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries, Backroads! Today we’ve got a fun topic to discuss, and that’s the Buckeye’s State’s rich history in newspaper comic strips, or to use an old late-1800s term, “the funny papers!” Anyone old enough to remember actually reading a daily newspaper will certainly recall flipping the pages to the back of the newspaper to read the comic strips in hopes of a good chuckle or two! The coroner doesn't know how 18-year-old Heather Walker was killed, or even when she died during the two-and-a-half months she went missing in the winter of 2008. The mere fact that she was stuffed in a trash can on the east side of Dayton, however, was enough for a ruling of homicide, since she clearly didn't put herself there. Sixteen years later, her family is still hoping for answers, and detectives are confident someone out there has them. www.ohiomysteries.com feedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Additional music: New Horizon - Aderin; Audionautix- The Great Unknown; The Great Phospher- Daniel Birch Learn more about your ad choices. Vortex of evil- it sure felt like it growing up there that year, too. I've always felt that Kathy Menendez got blown off because she was "an habitual runaway" by the people who were supposed to get justice no matter who she was. I don't care how much of a bratty kid somebody was, they don't deserve to die like that. As a kid, I always assumed "found naked, beaten, and strangled" was code for "raped and killed". I wonder if they even bothered with a rape kit. Her poor mother. I also have doubts about there being a sniper. Local rumor is that it was a specific hit, meant to send a message to Portage County Sheriff's Department. Poor Sarah Boehm. My gut says her dad did it. Killed her in PA because he was afraid she'd tell her counselor he'd been abusing her, then when Kathy turned up, it's only what, a 2, 3 hour drive, to dispose of Sarah's body in the same beaten, strangled, naked condition? Good way to muddle the investigation. It may have worked. He later plead guilty to, what was it,

What are the odds of Lester Eubanks, a repeat rapist, having never raped again? Pretty slim, I'd say. Here's hoping they get his DNA and actually get him.
