Today’s guest has covered a wide range of topics as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. She chiefly covers sports, business, and politics, including both the Rio & London Olympics, doping coverage, features on legal and financial issues in sports, and the occasional video shot from a dog sled. Her work regularly appears in leading publications like the New Yorker, Esquire, and Bloomberg BusinessWeek.
Her work has received many honors and awards, including as part of The Wall Street Journal’s team that won Gerald Loeb and New York Press Club Awards in 2011 for covering the “Flash Crash” of 2010. She was included in Forbes magazine's first-ever 30 Under 30 list for media.
We met at a networking dinner hosted by Dorie Clark and I was fascinated to learn that she had written a New York Times bestseller about the history of the board game Monopoly. She really has a broad range of interests and experiences.
Please join me in welcoming Mary Pilon.

This week, I'll be sharing the details of a study that explains why networking makes us feel dirty.
Subscribe and leave an honest rating and review on iTunes. Thanks!
Are you resisting networking because you feel like it’s dirty business? Well, you are not alone. A study published in 2014 found that networking with the goal of career advancement made people feel icky. The study, co-authored by professors from Harvard Business School, University of Toronto, and Northwestern University, used one experiment to conclude that this kind of transactional networking for professional gain made people subconsciously rank cleaning products higher than other household or office products. In another experiment participants who thought about this kind of professional networking answered fill-in the blank words with words associated with bathing, while those thinking about personal networking to build friendships did not.
What leads to this feeling of being dirty? We are our harshest critics, so if we cannot justify our networking behavior and feel we are using others without offering anything in return, we may question our moral purity and that makes us feel dirty.
All networking is not created equally. Listen to the rest of this episode...

Today’s guest is first and foremost a dad. What began as a small playgroup in 2008 became the NYC Dads Group and in 2013 expanded into the City Dads Group network with 26 groups across the country. This diverse community supports dads of all stripes, providing opportunities to socialize as they navigate parenthood together.
In addition to co-founding these groups, he co-hosts The Modern Dads Podcast, a monthly show highlighting stories of 21st-century dads and families. He regularly contributes to and is quoted by media outlets interested in telling the stories of involved dads.
As an at-home dad myself, I was grateful to discover this network of involved fathers existed and have become actively involved with the Boston Dads Group. I had an opportunity to meet my guest in person at HomeDadCon, hosted by the National At-Home Dad Network.
Please join me in welcoming Matt Schneider.

Over the last few months, I’ve been working on a new book and in the process asking my network to share their problems networking at conferences. Over and over I received questions that could be boiled down to - How do I get more value out of the experience of going to conferences? It’s a lot of time and money and I’m never sure how to meet people while I’m there. Maybe I shouldn’t bother going?
Maybe you’ve asked yourself a similar question?
Conferences are expensive and time intensive, but I wouldn't recommend avoiding them altogether. What you need is a strategy that will boost your confidence and help you feel your time and money were well spent.

Whether you know the phrase “spray and pray” or not, you probably have experienced this phenomenon and possibly, like me, you have been guilty of doing it. When I first started promoting a group I founded over a decade ago, I whipped out a business card within seconds of meeting anyone who might remotely be interested. It took me awhile to realize this wasn’t the most effective way to network. When friends and colleagues began to talk up my group, instead of me doing all the promotion, the group really took off.
Now, I teach people how to stop wasting time networking and I have a PSA: Stop Spraying and Praying. When people tell me they don’t like networking, it’s this kind of behavior that is turning them off.

Over the last few months, I’ve been working with an association to increase connections at their convention. In an age where information is found with one click and we count “likes” as engagement, conventions hold the promise of meaningful in-person connection with like-minded colleagues. Only through thoughtful and strategic planning will this promise become a reality.
Prior to my work with the association, I asked questions about their membership and the culture they had created at their convention over the last three decades. That’s when I discovered that a lot of the front line staff attending this event would likely not have business cards. As I shared in episode 14, “Are Business Cards Dead?”, even in the age of smartphones and apps, business cards are a critical tool for networking. This episode’s title is “The ABCs of Business Cards” because I believe you should Always. Bring. Cards. Remember those ABCs and you’ll be ready to make connections.

This week, I'll be sharing my thoughts on a new definition of networking.
Subscribe and leave an honest rating and review on iTunes. Thanks!
What do you think of when you hear the word “networking”? If you are most people, that word has a negative connotation based on your experience. If you keep going to networking events, have a bad experience and feel they are ineffective, then go out to another event and not change anything - well, it’s like that saying, “insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result.”
You need a new definition of networking. One that isn’t based on transactional exchanges with strangers or brief stilted conversations meant to screen very quickly everyone you meet. These limited definitions aren’t working for you and won’t get you the results you seek. For many people, the phrase “what’s in it for me?” is top of mind when they are at a networking event. If you are approached by someone with this frame of mind, you would feel like they were quickly screening you to see if you were worth speaking with further and then being chummy to get something from you that they need. Even if you offer them exactly what they are looking for, you won’t feel a bond with them or the desire to stay connected. Listen to the rest of this episode...

Currently, he owns his own boutique law firm in the San Francisco Bay Area catering to small business owners and entrepreneurs.
He is the creator of Smart Business Revolution and host of the Smart Business Revolution podcast. He’s also the cofounder of Rise25 Inner Circle, an annual accountability and group coaching program for professional service entrepreneurs who want to diversify their revenues and scale up.

Today’s guest has held a wide array of leadership positions including, presidential campaign spokeswoman, nonprofit executive director, award-winning journalist, documentary filmmaker, and she received a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School. And proving that she can do anything she puts her mind to: two days before this episode aired she became a Grammy-winning jazz producer!
All of these experiences inform her work as a marketing strategy consultant, professional speaker, and frequent contributor to many publications including Harvard Business Review, TIME, and Entrepreneur.
Recognized as a “branding expert” by the Associated Press, Fortune, and Inc. magazine, she is the author of two books "Reinventing You" and "Stand Out." For "Stand Out" she interviewed 50 of the world’s top experts to understand how they developed powerful ideas and got recognized for them. I’m pleased to share that I was one of the experts she interviewed. Stand Out was named the #1 Leadership Book of 2015 by Inc. magazine and was a Washington Post bestseller.
She consults and speaks for a diverse range of clients, including Google, the World Bank, Ford Foundation, Yale University, and the National Park Service.
She is also an adjunct professor of business administration at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and a Visiting Professor for IE Business School in Madrid, Spain.
She was recognized in Forbes as one of “25 Professional Networking Experts to Watch in 2015” and is quoted frequently in the worldwide media, including NPR, the BBC, and MSNBC.
Please join me in welcoming Dorie Clark.

Today’s guest has lived through many challenging leadership moments. His career in aviation began as a baggage handler and he rose through the ranks until he became CEO of an airline, and later was recruited to be CEO of another one. He has also been an entrepreneur and has served as director of several start-up technology companies.
Specifically, he is the former CEO of the highly successful Southwest Airlines whose foundation and culture placed people first. Later, when recruited to be the CEO of failing Braniff International, he was the 1st CEO to successfully restructure a major airline into…through, and out of Chapter 11. Earlier he spent over twenty years with United Airlines, his final position being Group VP of Marketing.
He learned along the way that cultures that place “people” as their #1 priority have the greatest long-term impact and success. He has shared his leadership lessons in his book “The Winds of Turbulence” and through a case study Harvard University wrote about his experiences at Braniff International, called “The Ethics of Bankruptcy.”
He is a speaker and advisor on business issues, such as change, leadership, and ethics. His passion for aviation began when he was growing up on an Iowa farm and learned to fly out of a pasture.
Please join me in welcoming Howard Putnam, CSP.
