“In Which We Are Introduced to Winnie-the-Pooh and Some Bees, and the Stories Begin”In this opening chapter, we meet Winnie-the-Pooh—also called Edward Bear—as he comes downstairs behind his friend, Christopher Robin. We learn how Pooh got his name and then follow his first adventure in the Hundred Acre Wood: an attempt to get honey from bees high in a tree. With Christopher Robin’s help (and a balloon), Pooh tries to disguise himself as a “little black cloud.” The bees, however, grow suspicious, and Christopher Robin must pop the balloon so Pooh can float safely down. This humorous escapade ends with Pooh’s arms stuck up from holding the balloon string for so long, perfectly capturing the lighthearted tone and gentle mischief that will characterize the rest of the stories.Chapter One from Winnie-the-Pooh by A.
