Ok, whisky geeks, this is why you subscribe the One Nation Under Whisky Padcost. It's in depth whisky conversation like this. Jason and Ewan go so far down the Clynelish rabbit hole, discussing science, flavor, and even mythology, that as they venture down the rabbit hole they bypass Alice and all the inhabitants of Wonderland. It's wonderful.  Note: This episode is on YouTube and there's a powerpoint presentation in there that is SO INCREDIBLY worth seeing. Ewan has only ever shown this powerpoint once before and it's the most amazing, in depth thing you'll ever see. If you love Clynelish get ready to understand why you love it so much (and then start to love it even more). All Hail the Duke of Sutherland, Ewan Morgan! ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Special thanks to: - Weigh Down for allowing us to use their song "Wooden Monsters" as our theme song - Moana McAuliffe for designing our Podcast Logo - RØDE for making *really* great microphones - Focusrite for making awesome USB receivers - Olympus and Tascam for making fine mobile recording devices - Joshua Hatton for producing and editing
Season 9 has officially begun! Joshua and Jason fly out to Kentucky to meet with Potter Jane Distillery's Co-Founder, Jane Bowie. This was a rare opportunity to walk through the distillery, which is still in construction, to discuss the plans and dreams both Jane Bowie and Denny Potter have while watching these dreams being built in real time. Also in discussion is the state of the whisky industry writ large. It's not as bad as you think it is! We hope you enjoy being a fly on the wall at our Potter Jane distillery tour.  ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Joshua and Jason spend a little time with James Saxon, Blender at Compass Box Whisky to discuss his whisky evolution and go into depth to James' blending process. If we were you, we'd grab a whisky and have a sit and listen in.  So, as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! The lovely team at Waiheke Island Distillery in New Zealand were kind enough to send Joshua and Jason their latest range of whiskies including a cask sample that shows the direction their spirit is going with some new stills the Distillery has installed. Along with the whisky samples came full information including: Barley types Yeast types Fermentation times Fermentation ABV Spirit cut points Cask type ...and more! A true whisky geeks delight! Listen in as J&J taste through three cracking Single Malts from New Zealand's Waiheke Distillery as well as some of their 14 month old peated spirit! ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Joshua & Jason discuss some very special Scotch whiskies being released on singlecasknation.com on Thursday, September 18: a 14yo BenRiach, 12yo Clynelish, and 8yo "Cawdor Springs". They also read some listener mail and drink a little whisky together. All in all, they had a heck of a time together. ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. A wonderfully geeky conversation is had between Joshua, Yoni Miller (SCN's in-house Cigar Czar/Tobacco Trouble-Maker/Meme-Meiser) and Terence Reilly of Aganorsa Leaf surrounding the ins and outs of cigar production, Aganorsa Leaf, and the next SCN cigar project with them using the Single Cask Nation ex-Balcones peated cask. Lots of fun conversation to be had! NOTE: Sadly, the video file from the conversation was lost in transfer so you won't be able to see any of the beautiful faces for this episode. They also swear quite a lot at one another. Is it more so than usual? There's only one way to find out... ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. Independent Bottling tends to have a sharp focus on Scotch whiskies, specifically single malt. There are a few notable bottlers that focus solely on American Spirits (Lost Lantern and Crowded Barrel come to mind here) but there's no independent bottler that focuses solely on World Whiskies. Well, not until now. Meet Pablo Goldbarg of Catador Itinerante, an independent bottler who does just that. He's also a long time friend of Joshua and Jason. Here's to a great conversation and a lot of laughs* *apologies to the Spanish speaking community for Joshua's terrible attempts at speaking your language. He will get a branch to the back! ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Joshua & Jason discuss the fact that India dropped its tariffs on Scotch whisky from 150% to 75% with the aim to drop them down to 40% over the next 10 years. This is a boon to the Scotch whisky industry especially during these slower times. Also, the boys discuss a question that popped up on the internet: “What's the best age to bottle Scotch whisky at?” Sure, it’s a somewhat ridiculous, highly subjective, question but they tackle it nonetheless because not all heroes wear capes! ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Man-o-Manschewitz, such a brilliant conversation between Jason and Christopher "Seabass" Sebastian of Blind Barrels!  Seabass is a friend, a longtime padcost listener, the receiver of our very first listener nickname (wethinks??), a whisky curator for Blind Barrels, and a helluva good guy. The conversation, the history behind Blind Barrels, the fact that Seabass has 87 children, and the blind tasting between Jason and Seabass... It all makes for a wonderful episode. ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. Joshua and Jason have a sit down to discuss the upcoming Retail Release # 13 for the US. There are 8 bottlings all in all but, to give you and idea, they've bottled a 17yo Balblair in PX Sherry, a 10yo Ben Nevis in Spanish Oak, a 12yo Benrinnes in New Charred Oak... some real charmers to discuss and a lot of ground to cover. Add to this, the boys share the details of the August 2025 US Online Exclusive bottlings. Three American whiskies sure to knock your socks off! Somehow 35 minutes became 59 minutes. How did that happen (again)? ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! So far, 2025 has been a year of travel for both Joshua and Jason, and the type of travel that has had them separate from one another. For a couple of guys who tend to be tied to the hip, it's been a wee bit strange. Now, we've been teasing the launch of a very big episode, a much anticipated episode, and we promise you, that will be coming soon (like, this season soon!), but for now the boys wanted to have a catch up, breathe a little, and just share some stories. FYI: There is a YouTube version of this episode should you wish to listen with your eyeballs. ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. Who says there's not a lot of whisky news happening in the summer time?! The Ardgowan Distillery in Scotland has finally started running spirit and the Lochranza Distillery on Arran (aka Isle of Arran Distillery) turned 30 years old on June 29th. Both of these items are quite news worthy if'n you ask us! Add to this, Jess shares details of her time at the Speyside Whisky School and Crisp Maltings and Joshua shares details of his 11 day tour of Scotland with some dear friends who also happen to be Nation members. Does 57 minutes count as 35 minutes if you're not counting? We think so... ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. Recorded in March 2025, Joshua and Jess visit The Highlander Inn located in Craigellachie, right in the heart of Speyside to meet with Tatsuya Minagawa, the inn's proprietor. Tatsuya is a legend. This is not hyperbole. This is fact. Once you're deep enough into Scotch and Japanese whisky Tatsuya Minagawa is a name you learn because it's a name that is synonymous with the spirit.  Listen in as the Jess and Joshua dig into a bit of Tatsuya's history, the history of The Highlander, what you can expect when you visit, and what's to come for the inn's future.  ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! It's one thing for Joshua and Jason to believe in a cask enough to bottle it but it's another thing entirely for a retailer to believe in what SCN does enough to not just agree that the whisky is great but to invest in the entire cask to sell to their customers. Today's episode highlights Single Cask Nation's US retail partners as well as a Canadian partner and the various casks released to these shops. The distilleries and cask types run the gamut. Spoiler alert: they're all delicious and priced as drinkers; these are SCN bottlings after all! ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Jason drives up to the Skagit Valley to meet up with Shane "Showtime" Armstrong, Master Blender at Westland Distillery. The two walk around the warehouse tasting from a number of single casks and then head down to the Westland distillery in Seattle to spend some time in the sensory/blending room to share some of that experience with you, the listeners. This is an ultra geeky episode that gets into the nitty-gritty of what makes a single cask a single cask and what makes a cask of whisky better suited for a blending component.  ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Joshua & Jason sit down to taste through Compass Box's new core range as well as the new Hedonism 2025 Edition. Having a chance to taste through this new core range was a delight. The boys not only share their tasting notes they also share which ones are their favorites. You might be surprised to find out which whiskies win out... ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. Joshua and Jason have a shared passion outside of Whisky, Mezcal, and Sherry and that passion is tea. What luck to find a fellow tea geek in Erin Lee, Head Distiller at FEW Spirits. Listen in as the Jason and Erin dive into the wide world of tea. You may (or may not) be surprised to hear how similar the whisky and tea worlds are! ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving.
