Description
Just as we get the podcasts sorted out, The One40Five Store is no more. After more than ten years of toughing it out at the wrong end of Brighton – struggling to provide the niche and unique in the neoliberal globalised legacy of cash over every thing and conformity hatched by Regan and Thatcher – the shop has finally been forced to close its doors. Thoughts and shouts go out to the staff. Fingers, Mel and Ed. YA LARGE!!!!! While they regroup and sort out the next phase, we are going to try to keep One40five Radio going, hopefully with mixes(programs dear, programs) not just from me, but with all involved showing off their considerable knowledge and skills.
#1: A SOUTH LONDON EDUCATION:
When I was growing up the first tribe I belonged to was the Two Tone ska revival thing. Stay-press, brogues and white socks. We all pretty soon fragmented. All looking to both be inviduals and at the same time belong. You had the soul boys (nice wedge, hunter jackets), the futurists (those dodgy double breasted shirts. And eye-liner), the neo-mods (Jam everything, little blue pills), but where we were – at the arse end of South London, a little too far out for riots – dub informed everything. The guys I went to school with progressed pretty rapidly from “Ghost Town” and UB40 to Rodigan on the radio, Junjo Lawes productions and toasting. “Face” was pronounced “Fierce”. Like a lion.
#2: BRIGHTON BY WAY OF EBISU:
#3: KOHINATA OR CROYDON?
#5: RECYCLED ROCK:
Bargain bins get raided and a bunch of hoary old rockers attempt to get their groove on. Tips from Moonboots, Mr Brewster, and RV Cock with re-edits provided by Lexx and QV. Oh yeah, and “Powerslide (part 2)” is on there.....
#8: Quiet Village are quality
Don’t really know what went on with this one. I started off trying to copy a Quiet Village mix. Taking their track-list, setting the tempo around 90-100 bpm, and finding suitable replacements for the tracks I didn’t have. Pitched down techno/border-line progressive house with the odd wrong-speeded pop record thrown in. In the end all the QV tracks – like “aqua” by the Eurythmics - fell off for others that seemed to fit better with the replacements.
BALEARIC SMILE MIX:
Done with friends at www.keyboardmasher.com in mind. Balearic summer indeed. Some hammered but still lesser known (best forgotten?) balearic classics.
