Marvin Gaye has often been referred to as a musical genius. Gaye is credited for helping shape the sound of Motown music and earned the nicknames the Prince of Soul and the Prince of Motown.  When Marvin Gaye's record "What's Going On" came out in 1971, unemployment was at a high of 6%, people were protesting police brutality, and Americans were angry over the Vietnam War. "What's Going On" reflected those times with laser-sharp precision, and has gone on to become Motown's biggest commercial success. The "Remember This" Podcast is sponsored by Gift Shop For Guys. Dubbed the “King of Hollywood,” 'Gone with the Wind' actor Clark Gable epitomised Hollywood's Golden Age, and was a legend for his on- and off-screen romances. Clark Gable initially had a hard time getting Hollywood roles due to his big ears. However, after signing with MGM, he was cast alongside stars like Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford, and his popularity soared. He hit box-office gold with such films as It Happened One Night and Gone with the Wind. His final film, The Misfits, was also Marilyn Monroe’s last film. As vocalist with Australian rock band AC/DC, Bon Scott played a critical role in the band’s journey from suburban hotels to international stadiums. On the night of February 19, 1980,  Scott, climbed into the backseat of a parked car in London. Scott had always been a heavy drinker, even by rockstar standards. On this particular night, he’d been indulging his habit in a local club. A bit worse for wear, Scott quickly passed out after his friends left him there to sleep it off. When they returned to the car the next morning, Scott was dead. Since then, questions about what exactly happened that night have persisted, challenging the legacy of one of rock’s most beloved bands. Ever since he was found dead in the Chateau Marmont hotel in Hollywood, his heart stopped by an overdose of cocaine and heroin, John Belushi has become synonymous with hedonism, appetite and excess – not dissimilar to his memorably greedy character Bluto in Animal House. Belushi was at the height of his career in 1982, which is a dangerous place to be. Everyone wanted to be his friend, and nobody wanted to tell him no. Belushi needed someone to tell him to take a break, step away from the party, or at least slow down. His consumption of narcotics, especially cocaine, has become only more infamous since he died. This is thanks in no small part to Wired, the biography published shortly after his death, written by Bob Woodward, which laid out in deadening detail how much cocaine Belushi took and when. Few films enjoy the cult status and enduring popularity like The Wizard of Oz. This 1939 American musical fantasy by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) is considered one of the greatest cinema masterpieces in history. However, when it came to creating the movie, everything wasn’t rainbows and poppy fields. On Aug. 15, 1939, Hollywood premiere of the film classic The Wizard of Oz, the story of a tornado that hits Kansas and transports a young girl named Dorothy, played by Judy Garland, to a magical place called Oz, where she embarks on a journey to track down the wizard who can help her go home. MGM had pulled out all of the stops for the movie, spending $3 million (about $55 million today), desperate to match the commercial success of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. And it worked: The film won two Academy Awards for its music — “Over the Rainbow” won best original song and made Judy Garland famous— in addition to earning nominations for best picture, best cinematography, art direction and special effects. Commercially speaking it made decent money when it was released, but made even more money after CBS aired it for the first time on Nov. 3, 1956. The mustache, the smirk, the dimples, and the apple-seed eyes - these 8 x 10 glossy attributes were the late Burt Reynolds’ impish stock and trade. He was, in short, a one-size-fits-all movie star straight out of old Hollywood. His easygoing nature and ladies' man reputation made him enormously popular with audiences, which he parlayed into a string of popular comedies and action films through the 1970s and '80s. In a country that has idolised and even immortalised its 20th century heroes, from Charles Lindbergh to Elvis Presley, no one more embodied the American dream of fame and fortune, or created a more enduring legend than Joe DiMaggio. Buddy Holly was one of the most influential singer-songwriters of the 20th Century. His music has left an indelible impression. Holly was well-versed in a number of musical styles and early on in his career became a seasoned performer. Holly was a continuous innovator; he wrote his own music and was among the first to use unconventional studio methods, such as ‘double-tracking.’ His wide range of songs include ‘That’ll Be the Day,’ ‘Peggy Sue,’ and ‘Maybe Baby.’ Apart from music, he is also remembered for his signature horn-rimmed glasses. His influence was immense. The ‘Rolling Stones’ had their first major hit with Holly’s ‘Not Fade Away.’ He was also one of the most important and earliest influences on many other popular musicians, including  Elvis Costello, The Hollies, The Beatles, Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton. Keith Moon was rock’s wildest character in the Sixties and Seventies, an unapologetic freewheeling hedonist whose lifestyle became synonymous with the mad, carefree image of the rock star at large. He courted the press and became notorious as ‘Moon The Loon’, the incorrigible clown who respected no authority whatsoever and never knew the meaning of the word embarrassment. As The Who became massively popular worldwide, Keith Moon became a celebrity, not just as a drummer, but as the mad jester to rock’s high court whose exploits included cross-dressing and elaborate practical jokes.  Keith Moon was more than just rock's greatest drummer, he was also its greatest character and wildest party animal. Fuelled by vast quantities of drink, drugs, insecurities and confusion, Moon destroyed everything with gleeful abandon: drum kits, houses, cars, hotels, relationships and, finally, himself. Few people have had a more profound influence on pop culture and music than John Lennon. With Paul McCartney, he's one half of arguably the greatest songwriting partnership of all time. With the Beatles, he claimed to be "more popular than Jesus." He was one of the most famous anti-war advocates of his time, and his solo career spawned such time-tested hits that the merest mention of the word "imagine" is likely to make that song play in your head. In the summer of 1973, John Lennon's marriage with Yoko Ono was in trouble. They were reeling from the commercial and critical disappointment of Lennon's Ono-produced Some Time in New York City, and Ono had said that the constant hate their union drew was slowly ruining their careers and her vibes. Ono wanted a break from the whole "she broke up the Beatles" narrative, and she needed one from Lennon, too. Her solution? She set Lennon up with a mistress. This period in Lennon's has become known as "The Lost Weekend." Around 7:30 a.m. on the 29th November 1981 the body of Hollywood star Natalie Wood was discovered floating face down in the Pacific Ocean near Catalina. She was wearing a flannel nightgown, blue wool socks, and a red down jacket. The rubber dinghy from her yacht Splendour was found washed up on the rocks a little further south.  There are few Hollywood mysteries more enduring or more heartbreaking than the one surrounding Natalie Wood's tragic death. The actress known for starring roles in films like West Side Story, Rebel Without a Cause, and Splendor in the Grass drowned when she was just 43 years old; but the circumstances surrounding the fatality are barely any clearer today than they were when the news first broke. What happened to her? Many years later, the question still stands. There’s a reason why the name Al Capone is still so well known today. The stout, cigar-chomping mobster has inspired countless films, pieces of literature, musicians, and, of course, criminals. While there were comparable crime figures in the 1920s, the Chicago mobster truly stood out from the pack. In terms of his impact on the underworld, Capone rose from being a street thug to the FBI’s “Public Enemy No. 1” in the span of about a decade. Al Capone was one of the most notorious gangsters of all time. During Prohibition, he lived the fast life, rolled in money, and committed crime after crime he thought he’d get away with. Prohibition had opened up vast new opportunities for Chicago criminals and Capone took full advantage of them, controlling illicit stills, organizing liquor distribution, and bribing police and politicians. Despite his rugged good looks, cool guy reputation and Hollywood success later in life, Steve McQueen’s youth and early years were punctuated with struggle. Martin Luther King Jr. became the predominant leader in the civil rights movement to end racial segregation and discrimination in America during the 1950s and 1960s, and was a leading spokesperson for nonviolent methods of achieving social change. His eloquence as a speaker and his personal charisma combined with a deeply rooted determination to establish equality among all races despite personal risk won him a worldwide following.  He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and was selected by Time magazine as its Man of the Year. His “I Have a Dream” speech, which is now considered to be among the great speeches of American history, is frequently quoted. His success in galvanizing the drive for civil rights, however, made him the target of conservative segregationists who believed firmly in the superiority of the white race and feared social change.  He was arrested over 20 times and had his home was bombed. Ultimately, he was assassinated on April 4, 1968, on the balcony of a motel where he was staying in Memphis.  The "Remember This" Podcast is sponsored by Gift Shop For Guys. Just one look at this bleak, foreboding island makes one thing crystal clear: this is not a place for a glamorous vacation. It's isolated, barren, cold and damp. In short, it was the perfect place to teach some of America's most hardened criminals a lesson. The intent was to serve as a place for those who were uncooperative and disruptive in other prisons, and eventually for them to be returned to complete the rest of their sentences afterwards.
