To see the original podcast page for this episode, please go to the NPC website: https://www.press.org/newsroom/presidential-candidate-talks-about-medias-coverage-2024-race The paramount role of the press in presidential elections is to inform the public about the issues and their voting options, and to act as a watchdog over government officials and candidates for public office. When one candidate for a major political party’s nomination is an incumbent president, do the other candidates in the race fade into the background of press coverage? What happens when a challenger comes from outside the political establishment? One 2024 presidential candidate has been vocal about the lack of mainstream news coverage her campaign has received, and we invited her on to Update-1 to talk about it. Marianne Williamson joins Shannon Fisher to discuss the specific responsibilities of the news media in covering the Democratic Primary race, how Williamson’s candidacy has been handled in the press, and what she thinks needs to change moving forward in terms of how presidential candidates are treated by the media. Start by Believing reveals the win-at-all-costs culture in elite athletics and higher education that enabled a quarter century of heinous crimes. For decades, osteopathic physician Larry Nassar was the go-to doctor for America's Olympians. Within this high-pressure world of competitive gymnastics, Nassar sexually assaulted and exploited hundreds of young girls under the guise of medical treatment.  In Start by Believing, John Barr and Dan Murphy investigate the largest sex abuse scandal to impact the sporting world. Through never-before-released interviews and documents they deconstruct the epic institutional failures and individuals who enabled him. When warnings were raised, self-serving leaders chose to protect their organization over the well-being of young people. Barr and Murphy tell the stories of those who fought back against the dysfunction within their sport to claim a far-from-inevitable victory and helped fuel the #MeToo revolution.
