We're excited and honoured to welcome lead guitarist and co-vocalist of Bristol's Svalbard, Serena Cherry, to the very first episode of Outside The Binary. Svalbard's unique blend of post-hardcore, post-rock and black metal have set them apart from their contemporaries and this year's masterful When I Die, Will I Get Better? is arguably a contender for album of the year, documenting Serena’s direct experiences with depression and domestic abuse against a backdrop of bittersweet soundscapes. During the chat, we go in depth about Serena's experiences of mental health, particularly in the ways she’s navigated lockdown and how she’s grown to be more open about it. We also talk about her emergence as a leading voice in heavy metal, as well as her experience as a woman navigating a scene and subculture that is notorious for struggling with change.
