In this episode, I explain what punishment means within the context of dog training and how it is wrongfully demonized and said to be ineffective by others in the industry while claiming that science supports this. SPOILER ALERT! Science does NOT support the claim. In fact, Science shows us that when punishment is correctly utilized in training, it works! While I am not advocating for more punishment in training, it is important to understand how to use it and that it can be beneficial if used correctly in conjunction with positive reinforcement. One of the biggest reasons that people are struggling with their dogs is because there is so much conflicting advice online. "you should never use punishment" and "punishment doesn't work" are lies, or at best, misinterpretations of the data. Here are the links to the two studies I referenced and the two books.
