Talking to your kids about online safety, needs to be as normal as teaching them to safely cross the street. I know we would rather not talk about pornography but the reality is, that every child with a device connected to the internet, is a portal to porn. If you don’t talk to your kids, they will be all alone when they come across porn, (not if, when) and not know how to process what they’ve seen, or have the language for it. Thankfully there are people like my guest, Kristen Jeson who is the founder of Defend Young Minds.com. I love talking to Kristen, but I also hate that I have to. Kristen and I spoke in 2020 about “porn proofing” your kids, and her books “Good Pictures, Bad Pictures”. This time we talk about: The Naivete Gap for parents and what they “think” their kids have seen and what the truth is The 5 things teens wish their parents knew about porn (listen to get the downloadable guide) How sex and violence give us the biggest dopamine hit Resources for parents whose kids have seen porn, or haven’t…yet For Kristen’s guide, How to Talk to Kids About Pornography: Quick Start Guide, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.comPrevious episode with Kristen: https://www.parentingforconnection.com/parentingourfuture/episode/2d7cbe0f/good-pictures-bad-pictures-porn-proofing-kids-or-pof54 About Kristen JensonAuthor of #1 best-selling Good Pictures Bad Pictures: Porn-Proofing Today’s Young Kids, Good Pictures Bad Pictures Jr: A Simple Plan to Protect Young Minds, and Good Pictures Bad Pictures Guidebook for Professionals, executive producer of Brain Defense: Digital Safety curriculum, the founder of DefendYoungMinds.com, and owner and CEO of Glen Cove Press.Contact information:Email: hello@defendyoungminds.comSocial Media:Website: www.Defendyoungminds.org https://www.defendyoungminds.com/ Books: https://defendyoungminds.com/booksLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristen-a-jenson-05816532/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DefendYMInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/defendyoungminds/Twitter: https://twitter.com/DefendYMPinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/DefendYM/Thanks for listening! There is no such thing as a perfect parent. Neither my guest or I would ever claim to be and in fact, we both agree that parenting can be looked at as a “practice” versus something we are striving to be “perfect” at. My guest is Cathy Cassani Adams who is the author of “Zen Parenting - Caring for Ourselves and Our Children in an Unpredictable World.” We talk about the meaning of Zen Parenting and that, in the simplest of terms, means to have an awareness of reality; what’s really going on, and acceptance of what IS. I love it when Cathy talks about how two things can be true. For example, that we can love being with our kids and also miss working and being with adults. I think that knowing we can be both allows us to leave shame and judgement of ourselves at the door! I know the subject of racism makes many people uncomfortable; myself included. As a white woman, I am trying to better understand the history of racism in North America and how it has created our present reality. In this episode, I’m talking to David Mura, who is an accomplished writer and subject matter expert. He and I discuss what “whiteness” is and some of the roots of racism in America, that goes back as far as the 1800’s when social scientists declared “blackness” criminal. We talk about how access to land ownership was restricted to Caucasians by the federal government in the 1930’s, and post WWII, how medical myths are still prevalent in today’s doctor’s offices and hospitals. We also touch on Critical Race Theory, what it is and if it should be taught to our children. David brings up the past in order for us to understand how it informs our present. He wants to enact change, not through shame and guilt, but through love and knowledge. Simply put, we want to teach our kids to have an open heart and mind when it comes to other cultures, and people of differing backgrounds and beliefs. There can be no hate when we are curious and open. Can you challenge your beliefs, bias and thoughts? Curiosity and openness are what can pave the way for more understanding and less fear and hate.I hope you find this episode helpful as you navigate this complex issue with your children. For David’s article, “How to Raise Anti-Racist Children” you can download it from the Parent Toolbox at www.parent-toolbox.com About David MuraDavid Mura is an essayist, memoirist, novelist, poet, activist and teacher. His latest book is The Stories Whiteness Tells Itself: Racial Myths and Our American Narratives. A Sansei or third generation Japanese American, he has written two memoirs, Where the Body Meets Memory: An Odyssey of Race, Sexuality and Identity and Turning Japanese, an account of his year -long stay in Japan which was a NY Times Notable Book. He has written a book on race and creative writing, A Stranger’s Journey: Race, Identity and Narrative Craft in Writing. He co-produced, wrote and narrated the Emmy winning PBS documentary, Armed with Language, about the Military Intelligence Service Japanese American soldiers who served in the Pacific during WWII, many of whom were imprisoned with their families by the US government.Social Media:Website: www.davidmura.com bBlog: blog.davidmura.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-mura-539a5b1a/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/david.mura.71?ref=br_rsInstagram: @muradavidTwitter: @MuraDavidYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/davidmura Thanks for listening! When it comes to Black History, there are so many stories that aren’t told. You can’t know what you don’t know or what is ignored. We aren’t here to talk about the past trauma of Black History in North America, but rather, their strengths and triumphs. In this episode, I’m talking to Dr. Crystal Menzies about honouring the history of slavery forced upon Black people, but also, recognizing that the Black history is not only tied to that trauma. There is a deep and rich history of power, influence and resistance. Crystal talks about “Community Cultural Wealth” to teach both students and teachers not to look at Black students as, “a problem” but to see them through a lens of what is ALSO TRUE. That they bring with them a history of cultural capital assets that are aspirational familial, linguistic, social, navigational and resistant. She looks to stories of Maroon communities who were formed from Africans who freed themselves from slavery and created hidden societies, as a way to model liberation within oppression. This is a great conversation to star having with your kids so we can all reframe the way we see Black people, communities and history. For Crystal’s EmancipatED Book List, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.comAbout Crystal MenziesA former educator in urban schools, Crystal drew on her personal experience, African-Diasporan history, and her Guyanese and African American roots to found EmancipatED where she develops research-based educational experiences that center Black communities. In her flagship product, she draws on the stories of Maroon communities – Africans who freed themselves from slavery and created hidden societies – to offer Black and Brown families a model for how to navigate as liberated beings within oppressive systems. My guest, Stephanie Malia Krauss, is an expert on helping you help your kiddos to thrive in this complicated world! How do we make sure our kids are well? We have a youth mental health crisis. How can we support them to support their mental wellbeing? Stephanie, as a mom, she wants her own kids to thrive so what she shares comes straight from her mama heart. She starts by looking at the whole child. Who there are in their entirety. Then she looks at practices they can adopt for a lifetime to help them in areas such as mental health, and relationships. From there, she builds a plan for wholeness and wellbeing for the rest of their lives. In this episode we look at these areas while Stephanie provides a roadmap for all parents to help their kids even if they are struggling, suffering or traumatized. The brain body connection is something we dive into because there are EASY things, we can be doing with our kids physically, that support their bodies, development, ability to learn and help them to thrive. The last thing you want for your kids is for them to start their life off as an adult buried in debt (like a lot of us were!). It doesn’t have to be that way! Even a small amount can add up to tens of thousands of dollars for your child when they become adults! This can be the start of generational wealth! It’s possible for anyone! My guest Ksenia Yudina is a CFA and the founder & CEO of UNest, a mobile investment app to help parents save for their kid’s futures! She shares how the app uses compound interest, gifting and rewards to build your child’s account. No matter what part of the world you live in, if you can save $25 a month once your child is born, that can amount to $60,000 when they graduate from high school! If you increase that amount over the years, say to $100 a month, it can amount to SIX FIGURES! Imagine not having to have school debt, have the money for your first car or down payment on your first home? Ksenia, shows you how to do all of this while also teaching your kids! For Ksenia Yudina’s easy tips to make saving for college less daunting checklist, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.comAbout Ksenia YudinaKsenia Yudina, CFA, is the founder & CEO of UNest. Prior to founding UNest, Ksenia spent over a decade working in financial services, where she realized that the industry failed to recognize that parents' number one priority is saving for their children. After raising almost $40 million in venture capital, Ksenia launched UNest, a financial service allowing parents to set up a tax-advantaged investment account for their kids in an easy-to-approach app format. Since then, she’s been named to Fortune’s 40 Under 40 list and has gotten the attention of Forbes and CNBC to name a few.Social Media:Website: http://www.unest.coLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/u-nestFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/unest/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/unestTwitter: https://twitter.com/UNest Thanks for listening! You read that right! Too often we thing when we struggle, have stress and anxiety, there is something WRONG with us! That we might have a mental illness…but what if it was actually something else entirely?Dr. Sasha Heinz is not only BRILLIANT, she will help you seethings in a completely different way! We start out by talking aboutself-compassion, but we quickly turn into a conversation like I’ve never hadbefore. I’ll be forever changed from it. Dr. Heinz talks about how we, as women, as moms, are socializedto prioritize other's needs - ok, nothing new here…but she goes on to talkabout how when we feel threatened, we revert back to our survival instincts offight or flight BUT women, move into “tend and befriend”. It’s acompletely different way of responding to stress than men. Here’s the best part! We can evolve past this! We are juststuck in a developmental stage as adults and with some internal work, we can befree of these disempowering behaviors! We can become people who considerothers' opinions but aren’t ruled by them. There is so much more in this episode I know you’ll love! Icould have talked to her for hours! I’m celebrating the 200th episode of my podcast! I can't even believe it! This episode is for all the moms who listen to my show and follow my work. I’m forever grateful to you.I’m just a mom who loves her kids and felt so lost and overwhelmed when I became a parent. I know that moms bear the brunt of societal pressure and we receive so much judgement (from ourselves and others). We are overworked, underpaid, and often unacknowledged for all that we do. Moms, you are HEROES!My message to you is that you are unequivocally ENOUGH! You do NOT have to be perfect to be a good mom. You do not need to be your mother or somebody else’s mother - you, just you, is enough for your child(ren). In this complicated world, with all the gadgets, devices and distractions, all our kids really need is us. Our love, attention, connection, understanding and presence. No bells and whistles needed. As I celebrate you, I’m also celebrating the guests who have left a mark on my heart and soul. I’ve learned something from every guest and some guests have changed my life and how I see my kids and the world. I’d like to tell you a little bit about who they are and why they’re so special.I’m humbled by all of you who listen to my show. I strive every day to bring you topics and guests who I think will delight, educate and resonate with you. Thank you for listening. When you are faced with a diagnosis given to your child, it can feel like the rug has been pulled out from under you or, conversely, you might feel relieved! Whether you feel like the diagnosis has confirmed your suspicions, or you feel angry, confused and grief, all of it is normal and natural and OK!BUT the one thing that isn’t ok, is you not taking care of yourself. being the parent of a neurodivergent child can be a rollercoaster of challenging moments, fun, laughter, joy and sadness all at once. In short, it can be exhausting, and if you don’t take the steps to care and nurture your needs, it’s not good for anyone. In this episode, we talk about how to process and make sense of a diagnosis and how to make sure we take care of ourselves along the way! Dr. Noreen Russell is back for another discussion with me. She is the mom of two neurologically atypical kids and has a practice dedicated to serving complex children and their parents. As we’re moving closer to summer break, it’s the perfect time to look at your kids’ screen use, gaming habits and the apps they’re using. Chances are that your kids will be spending more time on screens when they’re off for the summer, than in any other time of the year.In this episode, I’m talking to Titania Jordan who’s the CMO and Chief Parent officer of the online safety company, Bark Technologies. I’ve been a fan of hers for a while and follow her posts on Instagram. She shares the most current and relevant updates to help you keep your kids safe online. We talk about having a family tech contract when you give your kids their first phone or device (see contract sample below).Titania talks about what our kids are facing online, and how they’re using technology. Much of this, we simply don’t know about. The more we know, the more we can protect our kids which is why we’re talking about this in a way that helps you feel empowered, not overwhelmed! Some of the stats she shared are as follows. Look for the full list below.35.7% of tweens and 64.3% of teens were involved in a self-harm/suicidal situation.62.4% of tweens and 82.2% of teens encountered nudity or content of a sexual nature. As discussed in this episode, here are the extra resources Titania shared:Family tech contract https://info.bark.us/3Kj0AFaFull list harmful online dangers in Bark’s 2022 Annual Report https://www.bark.us/annual-report-2022/For Titania’s Bark Resources for Parents, including Online Safety Tips for Parents and Alarming Trends in Kids' Online Behaviour, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.comSocial Media:Website: https://www.bark.us/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/titaniajordan/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/barktechnologiesInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/barktechnologies/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@titaniajordanTwitter:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/barktechnologiesThanks for listening! We hear a lot about the nervous system these days, but what is it we are actually talking about? Before talking to my guest, Lauren Isaacs, I had a basic knowledge of the nervous system but she’s made me understand it’s workings and purpose in a whole new way! We are talking about “Polyvagal Theory” which is all about learning the biological order of human response that we ALL experience. So, when you LOSE IT, know that it’s not your fault, you’re triggered and your nervous system is reacting. No need to beat yourself up, feel ashamed, tell yourself a story about how terrible you/your reaction is, just notice it, accept it and take action to calm yourself (in really simple ways).Lauren explains that the nervous system from the moment we are born is looking for cues of safety and danger all the time. It’s meant to protect us and keep us safe. BUT as we live our lives and have experiences, like growing up in a home with lots of shouting, means shouting will equal danger and become a trigger for you. If you grew up with neglect, the nervous system doesn’t know how to regulate itself and that can lead us down a path that’s destructive. Understanding the way our nervous systems work for ourselves and our kids, allows us to better accept our reactions and our childrens’. When you’re feeling triggered, remember to use that as your signal to pause and take a breath. Notice what you’re feeling and give yourself an opportunity to see if you can both accept the situation and reframe it. This episode will serve as your gateway to using your nervous system to help you live a more connected, regulated and happy life! I get this question a lot. Sometimes people ask me because they know they want to be more peaceful, but some people ask because they think it means raising kids who are entitled snowflakes. I get it, and frankly, I wasn’t sure if it was for me until I understood what it was all about. In a “full circle moment” I'm interviewing Kiva Shuler, the CEO of the Jai Institute of Parenting where I was trained and certified as a Parent Coach! We are talking about what “Peaceful Parenting” is, and what it isn’t. We know that our childhoods carry enormous weight throughout our lives. As parents we have to approach the job of raising our children in a new way that recognizes we are living in a different world and we are tackling issues and situations that didn’t exist before. Peaceful parenting recognizes that our children are facing new challenges with mental health, social media, and the online world. Parenting in a more peaceful way doesn’t mean your kids run the show. It doesn’t mean there aren’t boundaries. As parents we know we can’t be perfect, and we aren’t trying to be, but we show up for our kids with humility, curiosity, listening, and honouring who our kids are, not who we expect them to be (how many of us wish we had a little “mini me”? I know I did!). We know parenting can be painful, frustrating, gut wrenching and full of joy, fun, excitement and connection. It can be all these things at once! For Kiva’s masterclass, The science of staging calm, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.comAbout Kiva SchulerKiva Schuler is the Founder and CEO of The Jai Institute for Parenting, an organization that has trained over 1,000 parenting coaches globally. She is also the author of the ground-breaking book The Peaceful Parenting (R)evolution: Changing the World by Changing How We Parent which examines the "consequences" of traditional parenting methods and offers a more modern approach grounded in emotional intelligence, values-led leadership, and effective communication.Kiva's passion for parenting stemmed from her own childhood experiences of neglect and trauma. Like many of her generation, she had a front-row seat to the kind of parenting that she did not want for her own children. The Jai Institute is the fulfillment of a promise that she made to herself when she was 16 years old that when she had children of her own, she would learn to parent them with compassion, consistency and communication.Kiva’s passion, enthusiasm and effervescence instantly create openness, connection, and inspiration with her audiences. On a mission to change the culture around parenting, Kiva wants children to grow up to reach their full potential, and live their lives free of trauma, shame and emotional wounds. As a single mother, she has built an extraordinary business that has touched tens of thousands of lives, and empowered others who share her mission to do this work. Can you really change your reality by changing the way you see a situation? My guest, Laura Noel says YES! In fact, the truth of this is not theory, it’s backed by scientific evidence. Do you have a situation you’re struggling with? What are your thoughts about it? How does it make you feel? What are your emotions? What do you “do” as a result of those thoughts and feelings? And finally, what does it cost you?Did you know that if you change your attitude about that situation that’s been plaguing you, you can change the situation? We are not talking about putting on rose coloured glasses but instead, harnessing the power of our minds and the way our brains work. Laura and I discuss how we can change the way we see a situation so we can put ourselves in the driver's seat of our lives and have outcomes we want versus experiences that bring us down and hold us back from living a full and beautiful life! THIS EPISODE will change your life! Listen in as we talk about how attitude influences your thoughts, feelings and actions and how changing your attitude will change EVERYTHING! It may feel like magic but it’s science! Use this to solve issues in relationships, with money, your kids or anything! I hope you love this conversation as much as I do! Can you overcome fear and anxiety? The answer is a huge YES! My guest Dr. Friedemann, is going to show you exactly how to do it!In this episode, I have the most interesting conversation with Dr. Friedemann, that at times, his answers left me speechless. He talks about how powerful our subconscious mind is and how it’s always operating in the background working to keep us safe and happy. AND, if our lives have been overtaken by fear and anxiety, how to use this powerful operating system to get back to who we really are- not who we have been told to be or think we need to be.So many people are living in survival mode because they don’t know who they really are. Do you remember when you were a child how sure of yourself you were in certain situations and areas? Why did we lose that? How did we lose it? It’s even harder for our kids with so many different voices telling them who they ‘should’ be, do and think. The fact is, the way we cope with the stresses and anxiety in life is often through disempowering patterns where we give our power away in order to feel belonging. But that doesn't work in the long term because it comes from a place of needing external validation which we can never count on. I loved every single minute of my conversation with Dr. Friedemann and I believe he has the key to helping you become empowered in your own life so you can shine your light and share your unique gifts with the world. On March 21, 2023 Dr. Friedemann’s e-book will be 50% off! Dr. Friedemann is the author of the award-winning book, The Fear and Anxiety Solution. His newest book, The Empowerment Solution (March 21, 2023), focuses on activating the healing power of the subconscious mind to switch out of stress- and anxiety-driven survival mode and make authenticity and confidence the everyday way of being.Social Media:Website: https://drfriedemann.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drfriedemannschaub/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@drfriedemannschaubFacebook: https://www.facebook.com//DrFriedemannInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/dailyempowermentsolutions/ https://www.instagram.com/dr.friedemannschaubPinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/drfriedemannTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/DrFriedemannSThanks for listening! Did you know that the most popular content on YouTube is kid's videos? How often are your kids on the platform watching videos? How often are you? Not only am I on YouTube with my channel, Parenting for Connection, my kids are also users. I say this to let you know I’m not vilifying or judging the millions of people who watch. It is however, important for you to know and understand how the app works so that you can be discerning about what you consume and what you allow your kids to watch. YouTube is essentially a search engine and advertiser dressed up as a video platform that no other company has been able to duplicate. My guest is leading business journalist, Mark Bergen, who’s written a book on the rise of YouTube and talks to me about how it came to be, and what parents need to look out for. In this episode, we talk about content marketed to kids, YouTube’s relationship with its content providers, the history of problems the platform has had, and how they prioritize some content and creators over others. We also talk about COPPA, The Child Online Privacy Protection Act, how it’s changed content. It’s a fascinating discussion every parent needs to hear. It’s especially important when there is a lack of poop = constipation! That’s what I’m talking about in this episode! This is one “talk” we can’t avoid…The Money Talk! Things have changed so much about the way we interact with money (who even carries cash anymore!?). What is money anyway? Is it bitcoin, crypto currency or is money still money? What is inflation? What is Shrinkflation? We are talking about all things money so your kids can have a healthy understanding of what it is, and how to use it wisely. My guest Robin Taub, who is an expert on all things money, is breaking it down for us in the most non-boring way! We talk about what “financial literacy” is (the knowledge skills and confidence to make financial decisions at every stage of life) and how it’s the key to economic growth and prosperity and allows you to make sound financial decisions and grow your money, not be caught in too much debt. What impression do your kids have of your finances? Do they think that you have a bottomless pit of money somewhere? Do they get the impression you have no money? Is the topic taboo in your household? If you feel lost, you aren’t alone! Robin Taub is so knowledgeable on this topic and helps you to break it down into 5 main pillars that starts with “Earn” and is followed by save, spend, share, and invest. One thing that Robin said in this episode, is that you want to start talking about money when your kids are young, so they can make mistakes when the stakes are low. That really resonated with me.For Robin’s guide on “The Financial Role Model Self-Assessment”, you can download it from the Parent Toolbox. www.parent-toolbox.comAbout Robin TaubA Chartered Professional Accountant by training, Robin Taub began her career at KPMG, transitioned into real estate, and then landed on the trading floor at Citibank Canada. There are so many good Dads out there so I want to cover this topic carefully. The fact is that I have so many questions from moms asking how to get their husbands more involved, and to help out more. So many complain that their partners aren’t equal partners and that leads to resentment, frustration and anger. If your husband is disengaged in parenting, what do you do?My guest, Jason Kreidman, the founder of “Dad University” is here to give us a dad’s perspective on how to approach your hubby to ask for what you want and need…so he’ll want to do it!Jason says we need to start by communicating our wants and needs with them. No expectations mind reading allowed! No saying “he should know this!” Men are defined by their accomplishments and they need to be appreciated for them (us too!), so Jason suggests we give them a constant dose of appreciation and the result? They are going to want to do what makes us happy. You can put this to the test yourself with these suggestions and the others Jason explains in our discussion.
