Brenda K. Starr (born Brenda Kaplan; October 15, 1966) is an American singer and songwriter. She is well known originally in R&B, dance and pop but now mostly in salsa-based music. She is also well known for her 1980s work with freestyle music. Starr was born as Brenda Joy Kaplan to a Jewish American father, organist Harvey Kaplan (also known as Harvey Kaye of the 1960s band the Spiral Starecase) and a Puerto Rican Roman Catholic mother.
In the early 1980s, through a chance meeting with Harry Belafonte, Starr landed a role in his 1984 hip hop film, Beat Street; she appeared in it, as herself, as a singer at an open-microphone audition. Starr's appearance in the movie garnered attention, leading to a recording contract on Mirage Records, through Arthur Baker, who enlisted the help of two production teams (Lotti Golden and Richard Scher, and Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers) to complete Starr's debut album, I Want Your Love. The lead single, "Pickin' Up Pieces", written by Arthur Baker and Lotti Golden, was a local club sensation and national hit, peaking at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Charts and on the Maxi Singles Chart. "Pickin' Up Pieces" also cracked the R&B Hip Hop Billboard Charts.
Starr's eponymous sophomore LP, which she released in 1987 on the MCA Records label before it became part of the present-day Universal Music Group, included what is considered her signature song, the power ballad "I Still Believe," which peaked at No. 13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, becoming Starr's first and only top 20 single on the Hot 100. In 1998, Mariah Carey covered the song as a tribute to her "mentrix;" Carey's version peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum by the RIAA. Starr's album also contained the club/dance smash "What You See is What You Get." The album peaked at No. 58 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Starr has had two top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100: "I Still Believe" (which peaked at #13) and "What You See is What You Get" (which peaked at No. 24 and at No. 6 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play.
Two of Starr's songs have been included on motion-picture soundtracks; "Sweet Surrender" was included in the soundtrack for the 1988 teen film License to Drive, starring Corey Haim, and "Sata" was on the soundtrack for the 1990 film Lambada. During the late 1980s, Mariah Carey sang background vocals for Starr, and Starr helped Carey secure a recording contract by giving a demo tape of hers to Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola at a party. After being dropped from Sony/Columbia Records for lackluster sales of her third album, By Heart, Starr worked odd jobs to support herself and her family.
Starr learned Spanish to help rejuvenate her career, successfully reinventing herself as a salsa/tropical and Latin pop artist. After the release of her cover of "Herida" (from the Chilean singer Myriam Hernández), which peaked at No. 16 on the Latin Pop Airplay and at No. 1 on the Latin Tropical/Salsa Airplay chart, she continued her success with a string of popular albums and chart hits.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, Norm, at the insistence of his grandmother, began singing in church at the age of five. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Pensacola, Florida, where he continued to sing at church services, political functions and various social activities throughout the city, becoming a most sought after local young talent.
After graduating high school, Norm returned to New Jersey to attend college. It was during this time that he began to develop his songwriting ability, and recorded his first demos. After college, he carved out a living for himself as a school teacher by day and honed his performance skills at night, singing in local talent shows and at open mic nights in and around New York City. He later became part of an R&B group called Mass Appeal, in which he was featured as the lead singer. Although widespread commercial success eluded the trio, a dance remix of their independent record “A Little Bit of Heaven” (featuring Kima of the R&B group Total), made the rounds on the Philadelphia club scene, which led to radio airplay and a review in Billboard. The exposure opened the doors to a whole new world for Norm, as he took advantage of an opportunity to travel to Japan, where he performed nightly in front of wildly enthusiastic crowds.
Upon his return to the United States, Norm relocated to the Philadelphia area, where he continued his education and earned a Master's degree. He continued to write songs and record periodically, and, when the timing was right, he turned to Grammy nominated music producers Ric Zivic and Ted Wender to help him facilitate the next leg of his musical journey. The result was “This Is My Time,” a multi-genre debut album which served as the perfect vehicle to showcase the vision and versatility of this multifaceted singer / songwriter. The album was well received by industry insiders and music consumers alike. The soca-infused single “Love Me”, became a Top 10 indie record in the UK, and shortly thereafter, AM Media Online honored Norm with their first ever “Ammy Award” for Best R&B Artist. A second single, “Stretch Ya Neck”, became a worldwide DJ favorite, and the song’s fun, upbeat video was designated a “must watch” by the popular search engine, Yahoo.
In 2016, he teamed up with former Ex-Girlfriend singer Julia Robertson on the sultry ballad, "Body Rush". The song was a worldwide smash, hitting the Top 10 on Digital Radio Tracker, The European Indie Top 200 Chart and the World Music Stage Countdown. The success of "Body Rush" earned the duo a preliminary ballot Grammy nomination for "Best R&B Performance" for the 59th Annual Grammy Awards in 2017. It also created opportunities for him to perform alongside such R&B hitmakers as Hi-Five, Allure, Riff, Surface and R&B legends Force MD's and The Intruders.
His current project finds him paired with Julia once again; this time on an up-tempo groove entitled "Home Tonight". Produced by Buddy Wike of the hit R&B group Intro, "Home Tonight" showcases a more playful side of the duo, who, when performing together, have been called "Today's Ashford and Simpson".
Gifted with an amazing talent and driven by determination and experience from lessons learned, Norm Adams exemplifies that when preparation meets opportunity, a dream deferred doesn’t stay that way. His time, indeed.
