In this inspiring episode of the Pearls of Wisdom Jewelry Podcast, Guy chats with the remarkable Daniela Sokolowski, founder and creative force behind DiCoure Diamonds—a bespoke jewelry studio built from passion, precision, and purpose. Daniela's journey is anything but ordinary. Born in Romania and later moving to New York City with no background in diamonds or jewelry, she began her career managing a diamond wholesale office in the heart of the Diamond District. From working with major names like De Beers and other leading wholesale companies, she gained invaluable industry knowledge—but longed for a space to fully express her creativity and commitment to people. That vision ultimately blossomed into DiCoure Diamonds, founded in January 2024. Today, Daniela specializes in personalized, handcrafted pieces that celebrate individual stories—bridal jewelry, anniversary bands, repurposed heirlooms, and one-of-a-kind designs infused with emotional meaning. Her process is deeply collaborative, focusing on education, transparency, and understanding each client's personality, lifestyle, and story. For Daniela, jewelry isn't just decorative—it's intimate, symbolic, and crafted "from the heart," honoring the Italian phrase that inspired the name DiCoure. Beyond her artistic talent, Daniela shares her powerful triumph over cancer and how this life-altering experience reshaped her purpose, strengthened her empathy, and ignited her desire to inspire women to dream boldly and embrace new beginnings. Her recent successes include her appearance on News 12 during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting her mission and resilience. This episode is filled with authenticity, passion, and uplifting insight into the world of custom jewelry and the strength behind the artist. In this special episode, Guy and Elesa are ready to talk about a huge, surprising announcement: Southern Jewelry News (SJN) has new ownership! Guy reveals that Chris Smith and Bill Newnam, the former owners, have sold Southern Jewelry News... to him! This transition marks the first major change since SJN began printing monthly in 1988. After over 35 years and 25 years of running the publication, Bill and Chris were ready to retire. Elesa, who has worked with the former owners for three decades, enthusiastically endorses Guy, calling him the "perfect person to take over the rain". Guy will be working alongside Elesa and Martha Oswald to continue the legacy of the longest-running and most respected jewelry publication. Guy reflects on the incredible achievement built by Bill, Chris, Elesa, and Martha. He has always seen SJN as a "gold mine", and he is honored to take on this big undertaking with his JSM team, despite having no prior publishing experience. The team addresses a major change: due to the challenging high costs of paper and postage, Southern Jewelry News and Mid-America Jewelry News (MAJN) will no longer be printed monthly. They plan to publish only a few print issues each year, possibly one every quarter, mainly for trade shows. However, Guy is committed to maintaining the "heart and soul" and respected content of SJN while implementing exciting new features and improvements online by the beginning of January. Join Elesa and Guy as they celebrate the 100th episode of the podcast and look forward to improving the website, the podcast format, and bringing more value to the industry. The future is bright, and change is good! Don't miss this must-listen episode to hear all about the transition and the exciting future of SJN!   Brought to you by: Southern Jewelry News: https://southernjewelrynews.com/    Jewelry Store Marketers: https://jewelrystoremarketers.com/    Learn more about the Pearls of Wisdom Jewelry Podcast https://southernjewelrynews.com/podcast    Subscribe on your favorite podcast platform:   • Apple Podcast = https://podcastsconnect.apple.com/my.-..   • Amazon Music/Audible = https://www.audible.com/pd/Pearls-of.-..   • iHeartRadio = https://www.iheart.com/podcast/263-pe...   • Spotify = https://open.spotify.com/show/6IU1OHw...   • Google Podcast = https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0...

In this episode of the Pearls of Wisdom Jewelry Podcast, we sit down with the remarkable Todd Malcolm of Malcolm Jewelers in Moline, Illinois. A third-generation jeweler with more than 39 years of experience, Todd carries forward an 80+ year family legacy that began with his grandfather in 1941. From their roots in Philadelphia to building one of the Quad Cities' most trusted jewelry names, Malcolm Jewelers has stood as a symbol of craftsmanship, family, and community. Todd shares how he boldly transformed the business in 2003 from a traditional 3,000-square-foot full-scale jewelry store into a specialized, by-appointment-only jeweler. This shift not only allowed him to reduce overhead but also gave him the freedom to connect personally with clients and focus on what he does best: custom jewelry design, restoration, and one-of-a-kind creations. His celebrated Stories from the Heart Collection—inspired by love, family, faith, and personal milestones—represents both his artistry and his dedication to creating meaningful jewelry that tells stories across generations. We explore the challenges of navigating changing economies, evolving consumer habits, and the shift from retail to wholesale. Todd shares one of his most meaningful successes—creating his first piece, "In Mother's Arms", after losing his brother to cancer. The pendant raised $8,000 for Gilda's Club and touched countless lives, including a woman who wore hers until her granddaughter's remission. This heartfelt beginning helped launch his Stories from the Heart Collection. He also offers invaluable advice for young jewelers: embrace education through Gemological Institute of America (GIA), gain hands-on experience in independent jewelry stores, and get involved in your local community. This conversation is filled with wisdom, legacy, and inspiration. Todd's journey proves that jewelry is more than metal and stones—it's about meaning, connection, and memories. Tune in now and discover why Malcolm Jewelers and Todd's story are truly gems worth celebrating! In this episode of the Pearls of Wisdom Podcast, brought to you by Southern Jewelry News and Jewelry Store Marketers, host Guy welcomes Chuck Keohler of Anthony's Jewelers and special guest Chuck Frey of Charles Frey and Company. With more than 40 years of experience, Chuck Frey specializes in helping jewelers navigate major business transitions—from liquidations and stock reduction events to retirement, relocation, or passing the store to a successor. While many think of liquidations as the end of the road, Frey explains that transitions don't always mean closure. For some stores, it's about continuing under new ownership—whether that's a family member, long-time employee, or an outside buyer. His company helps jewelers determine realistic purchase prices, design effective transition sales, and generate the cash flow needed to support the process. Frey also highlights the importance of goodwill and reputation, noting that buyers are often attracted not just to inventory but also to the community ties a store has built. He shares strategies such as advertising "retiring, seeking buyer" events, which create urgency while opening doors for potential new owners. Packed with practical insights, this conversation explores succession planning, financial realities, and creative solutions for jewelers preparing for change. Whether you're considering retirement or seeking to sell, this episode provides valuable tools for ensuring a smooth transition and preserving your store's legacy.   Brought to you by: Southern Jewelry News: https://southernjewelrynews.com/ Jewelry Store Marketers: https://jewelrystoremarketers.com/ Learn more about the Pearls of Wisdom Jewelry Podcast https://southernjewelrynews.com/podcast Subscribe on your favorite podcast platform:  • Apple Podcast = https://podcastsconnect.apple.com/my.-..  • Amazon Music/Audible = https://www.audible.com/pd/Pearls-of.-.. • iHeartRadio = https://www.iheart.com/podcast/263-pe... • Spotify = https://open.spotify.com/show/6IU1OHw... • Google Podcast = https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0...
In this episode of the Pearls of Wisdom Podcast, recorded live at the Atlanta Jewelry Show, host Guy welcomes Melissa Mor, founder of Mrs. Push. Melissa shares the story behind her business, which focuses on "push presents"—special gifts given to moms after childbirth or to celebrate motherhood. While the tradition has existed for years, it has only recently become a widely recognized and celebrated category. Melissa explains how Mrs. Push curates primarily jewelry pieces from female- and mom-owned brands. Popular selections include stackable birthstone bands, charms that can be added with each child, and mother-daughter bracelets that create lasting connections. These pieces go beyond jewelry—they become symbols of love, family, and milestones worth remembering. She also highlights the importance of storytelling in retail. Customers often share personal journeys when choosing a piece, whether it's a dad shopping for his partner's first child or a mom honoring children already grown. These stories give jewelry deeper meaning and transform gifts into lifelong keepsakes. Melissa's passion shows through as she talks about growing the business, serving a niche audience, and creating jewelry that resonates with moms of all ages. This episode offers insight into how focusing on a unique market can lead to both business success and emotional impact, reminding us that meaningful jewelry is always tied to meaningful moments.   Brought to you by: Southern Jewelry News: https://southernjewelrynews.com/ Jewelry Store Marketers: https://jewelrystoremarketers.com/ Learn more about the Pearls of Wisdom Jewelry Podcast https://southernjewelrynews.com/podcast Subscribe on your favorite podcast platform:  • Apple Podcast = https://podcastsconnect.apple.com/my.-..  • Amazon Music/Audible = https://www.audible.com/pd/Pearls-of.-.. • iHeartRadio = https://www.iheart.com/podcast/263-pe... • Spotify = https://open.spotify.com/show/6IU1OHw... • Google Podcast = https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0...

In this episode of the Pearls of Wisdom Jewelry Podcast, we sit down with Aleah Arundale, diamond wholesaler, educator, and the dynamic founder of Jewelers Helping Jewelers (JHJ). Known for her bold personality, electric blue hair, and unwavering commitment to helping others, Aleah opens up about the evolution of JHJ and how the group's spin-off, the JHJ Crime Network, has become a vital tool in protecting independent jewelers across the country. Aleah shares how her journey started with a deep love for the industry and a desire to connect more authentically with other jewelers. What began as a few Facebook posts quickly grew into a thriving online community where jewelers share everything, from pricing advice and inventory questions to real-time alerts about suspicious buyers and criminal activity. She talks candidly about the heartbreaking stories that motivated her to take action, and the messages she's received from store owners who were able to stop scams or avoid theft thanks to her group's tips. But Aleah's passion doesn't stop at jewelry. She talks about running a donation center out of her home for families in need, transforming her yard into a whimsical fairy garden for local kids, and organizing global jewelry vacations, from Tahiti to Italy, and soon, Mexico. These adventures bring together industry professionals not just to network, but to truly bond, share knowledge, and spark new ideas in beautiful destinations. We also explore how jewelers can diversify their businesses through high-value asset lending, what Aleah calls "executive loans." She believes that pawnbroking, when done right, offers a dignified and profitable way to serve customers in need, while also adding a stable revenue stream to any retail operation. Aleah encourages every jeweler to lean into what makes them different, whether that's through style, a unique hobby, or simply being real with customers. In a world full of sameness, standing out isn't a liability; it's your greatest strength. This episode is packed with actionable tips, heartfelt stories, and powerful reminders about the profound impact one person can have on an entire industry. Tune in to hear Aleah Arundale's story and walk away with new inspiration for building a jewelry business that's bold, authentic, and community-driven.   Brought to you by: Southern Jewelry News: https://southernjewelrynews.com/ Jewelry Store Marketers: https://jewelrystoremarketers.com/ Learn more about the Pearls of Wisdom Jewelry Podcast https://southernjewelrynews.com/podcast Subscribe on your favorite podcast platform:  • Apple Podcast = https://podcastsconnect.apple.com/my.-..  • Amazon Music/Audible = https://www.audible.com/pd/Pearls-of.-.. • iHeartRadio = https://www.iheart.com/podcast/263-pe... • Spotify = https://open.spotify.com/show/6IU1OHw... • Google Podcast = https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0...
In this episode of the Pearls of Wisdom Jewelry Podcast, we're joined by Mike Kanoff, owner of Michael's Jewelers in Yardley, Pennsylvania, for a warm and insightful conversation about the journey of running a family jewelry business, expanding after nearly three decades, and finding personal balance in a demanding industry. Mike opens up about launching Michael's Jewelers back in 1997 with his parents, right in the hometown where he grew up. Now, after 28 years in the same location, the store is preparing for an exciting move just two miles up the road, a decision Mike made not out of urgency, but from a desire to continue growing before reaching a plateau. His proactive approach is a masterclass in knowing when to take the next step, even when everything seems to be going well. But beyond store expansions and strategy, Mike shares what really keeps him grounded: his passion for people, love for the industry, and commitment to a work-life balance. From his candid take on staying organized ("organized chaos") to his stories of being a weekend warrior as a competitive hockey player, Mike shows that running a successful business doesn't mean sacrificing your personal identity. It means building systems, trusting your team, and always making room for what brings you joy. This episode is packed with wisdom for jewelers and entrepreneurs alike, especially those navigating the challenges of longevity, growth, and burnout. Mike's perspective on leading with heart, listening to your instincts, and taking time for yourself is as refreshing as it is relatable. Whether you're in year one or year twenty-eight of your business, Mike Kanoff's story will leave you feeling inspired, encouraged, and ready to take your next big leap, with balance and purpose. Tune in to hear how one jeweler blends legacy with forward-thinking leadership and why creating space for joy may be the most strategic move of all.   Brought to you by: Southern Jewelry News: https://southernjewelrynews.com/ Jewelry Store Marketers: https://jewelrystoremarketers.com/ Learn more about the Pearls of Wisdom Jewelry Podcast https://southernjewelrynews.com/podcast Subscribe on your favorite podcast platform:  • Apple Podcast = https://podcastsconnect.apple.com/my.-..  • Amazon Music/Audible = https://www.audible.com/pd/Pearls-of.-.. • iHeartRadio = https://www.iheart.com/podcast/263-pe... • Spotify = https://open.spotify.com/show/6IU1OHw... • Google Podcast = https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0...
How does someone go from sketching ideas in a notebook to becoming a custom jeweler known for transforming her clients' wildest ideas into wearable works of art? In this episode of the Pearls of Wisdom Jewelry Podcast, we welcome Carter Eve, founder of Carter Eve Jewelry, as she shares the deeply personal story behind her journey into the world of fine jewelry. It all began in 2008 while living in New York. As a student, Carter found herself returning again and again to a small jewelry store—not to shop, but to observe. Fascinated by the goldsmiths carving wax rings in the back room, she asked endless questions until one of the jewelers finally told her, "You really should consider doing this yourself." That nudge led her to turn a passing fascination into a full-time passion—and eventually, a business. Since launching her brand in 2013, Carter has blended old-school craftsmanship with cutting-edge techniques. She apprenticed under an 85-year-old master jeweler who taught her everything from intake to customer care the traditional way—skills she still uses today, even as she experiments with 3D modeling and tech-forward design. Her process is fueled by the creative visions of her clients, whom she calls her greatest teachers. Every project pushes her skills further, making room for innovation while staying grounded in timeless artistry. In this candid conversation, Carter opens up about the mistakes that shaped her—like the ring she poured her heart into, only to melt it down when it didn't turn out right. She also talks about the importance of trust in the jeweler-client relationship, the evolving tastes of younger generations, and how she uses sketchbooks to mine ideas and spark new creations. Beyond the bench, Carter Eve serves on the board of the Women's Jewelry Association (Los Angeles chapter), hosts pop-ups, and is exploring retail partnerships to expand her presence. She also shares some fun, off-the-cuff moments—like imagining what she'd hide inside a ring with a secret compartment, and how she strategically "left behind" detailed ring sketches for her partner to find when it came time for her own engagement. Whether you're a new designer, a jewelry lover, or someone dreaming of turning creativity into a career, this episode is packed with hard-earned wisdom, warmth, and practical advice from someone who's carved her path, quite literally, from wax to gold.   Brought to you by: Southern Jewelry News: https://southernjewelrynews.com/ Jewelry Store Marketers: https://jewelrystoremarketers.com/ Learn more about the Pearls of Wisdom Jewelry Podcast https://southernjewelrynews.com/podcast Subscribe on your favorite podcast platform:  • Apple Podcast = https://podcastsconnect.apple.com/my.-..  • Amazon Music/Audible = https://www.audible.com/pd/Pearls-of.-.. • iHeartRadio = https://www.iheart.com/podcast/263-pe... • Spotify = https://open.spotify.com/show/6IU1OHw... • Google Podcast = https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0...
