Graham Ulicny spoke to Pink Noise from a Seattle airport hotel lobby, during a brief stop on a nationwide tour playing keys with The Faint. We talked about the new album Terry's Dolmen and the stories behind the songs. Pink Noise listeners will remember Shane McCord from episode 15 with Sham. Shane played classical guitar and clarinet on Terry's Dolmen, and we heard from Graham about how his friendship with Shane began. We also hear about the social turmoil motivating the songs on this album.

Eric George is a musician, songwriter, audio engineer and producer from Burlington, Vermont. In this episode we speak about the Burlington music scene, Eric's album Mostly Ghosts, and some of the fact and fiction that inspired the songs.

We talked about how they met, their musical backgrounds and some of the stories behind their songs. We also hear about their hero Connie Converse, to whom their band name pays homage. Other destructive world events are discussed with good humor and great music.

Wes Swing joins to discuss the new album Live From Francesco's Backyard. Pink Noise host Jeff Gregerson plays the role of interviewer and bandmate in this conversation, as the recording in question is a collaboration between the two musicians. Recorded in Providence, Rhode Island in 2018, Live From Francesco's Backyard features Wes Swing on cello, loops, voice and guitar and Jeff Gregerson on synths, beats and digital effects. Wes spoke to us from Mexico City where he has been living for the past year and a half.

Paul Burgess joins to discuss the years of upheaval that led to the creation of his album Nothing Ever Happens and the process of leading his own project after being a contributor to many others.

Sarah Elstran of The Nunnery joins to talk about the origin of Cyrus Song from the new album Floating Gardens. Her story details the chaotic circumstances of the birth of her first child, and how a melody she wrote during her pregnancy served to guide her child to health against all odds.

SKRT is a trio from Dayton, Ohio. I spoke with Asche and Micah about their new split 12" record with fellow Ohioans Lung and how it came together. Asche opened up about the lyrical themes in their music and finding a way to process difficult life experiences through writing.

I speak with Hicham Benhallam and Kim McMasters of the Richmond post-rock band Post Sixty Five. We discuss the life and death of Hicham's father, and how plans for a final visit and funeral in 2017 were disrupted by US efforts to enact a "muslim ban." The Post Sixty Five song Middle Child explores the grief and loss of losing a parent, and we talked about releasing the music to the world in 2020 when performing and gathering would not be possible.

On the first episode of the second season of Pink Noise, Chloë Ester discusses the traumatic events that inspired her debut release Dying All The Time. We begin our conversation by acknowledging the relentless chaos of 2020 and how it affected her plans for releasing her music. This interview contains explicit language and mentions self-harm, suicide and sexual assault.

Jordan Perry is a songwriter and guitarist who has been involved in many projects. He has recently released two albums of classical guitar compositions. I wanted to interview Jordan when I learned that he once worked as a guitar teacher at a school in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank of Palestine. In this interview Jordan refers to his own process of creating music as a mode of inquiry. This mode of inquiry allows him to meditate on and explore systems and patterns that catch his attention. But his aim is more to explore and pose questions, rather than to seek resolution. Alethea Leventhal is the songwriter and producer of Ships in the Night. Alethea talked about how exploring death and darkness in her music has roots in her childhood fascination with death and teenage immersion in horror films. We also hear about her conflicted relationship with her dreaming unconsciousness, and how her music illuminates the darkness.

Nicole Yun is the singer, guitarist and songwriter of Eternal Summers - the road-tested indie surf-rock band from Virginia. We hear about Eternal Summers and taste some of their music in this episode, but Nicole Yun's latest project is a debut full length solo album called Paper Suit, which will be released under her own name on June 7. We talked about what inspired her to make a solo record, and how she got into indie rock after studying music composition and performance in college. Paper Suit will be out on June 7th. Today we're going to hear from Gemma Gamarra and Marco Albano, members of the Barcelona-based band Berlinist. They are the creators of the soundtrack of the video game Gris. I met Gemma & Marco in 2013 when I was on tour in Spain. At the time, Gris was not yet in development, but it was clear Marco was interested in combining his passion for music and games. The idea of the game Gris started with illustrator Conrad Roset - the game's Art Director. Playing the game involves exploring a beautiful and strange world based on Conrad's illustrations. The player has to solve location-based puzzles to advance to new areas. Gemma & Marco's soundtrack enhances the otherworldly feeling. Gris has been nominated for a bunch of awards. They've received 4 nominations in the 2019 SXSW Gaming Awards including Excellence in Musical Score, Excellence in Art, Excellence in Visual Achievement, Most Promising New Intellectual Property. I talked to Gemma & Marco about working with the art director and programmers to compose their music and incorporate it into the game.
