In this episode of Pipeline Things, Rhett Dotson and Christopher De Leon are joined by Jason Skow to discuss truncated data and what it means for a level 3 validation and API 1163. From Jason’s memorable meet-cute with Chris to tackling truncated data, this episode is packed with useful insight and lessons learned from Jason’s career in pipeline integrity. Chris and Rhett ask Jason about his 2022 IPCE publication, “Estimating measurement performance with truncated data sets.”  They ask about the origin of Jason’s idea, the applicability, and about his experience and insight into API 1163 Level 3 validations. Highlights:   What is the difference between API 1163 Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3? When do you use each level of validation? How do you know a certain level is appropriate in a given scenario? How common are API 1163 Level 3 validations? How are Level 3 validations beneficial for quantitative integrity assessment programs? Can you still do a Level 3 validation with truncated data? Did we intentionally film an AI episode in front of robot monster art? Maybe… As machine learning becomes more prevalent, the industry is actively exploring how to leverage AI's capabilities to its advantage. On the newest episode of Pipeline Things, Christopher De Leon and Rhett Dotson are joined by Adrian Belanger as they explore the application of machine learning and his IPC 2022 paper: “Not All Data Is Good Data: The Challenges of Using Machine Learning ILI.” While machine learning efficiently analyzes data and uncovers patterns for analysts, Rhett, Chris, and Adrian discuss the critical role that quality inputs play in actionable outputs. Bad data can arise from mismatches between ILI data and field data, or from incomplete data that has been excluded. Belanger discusses the importance of screening data and looking for anomalies in data when utilizing AI. Rhett, Chris, and Adrian discuss the growth and use of machine learning, what good data is, and how machine learning can effectively be utilized in the industry. Highlights:  What type of data is fed into machine learning, and what goes wrong? Is the future of machine learning to replace jobs in pipeline integrity? Is parameter data leveraged in machine learning rather than just ILI signal data? What does good and bad data look like from Adrian’s perspective? What are the common mistakes with data? Why are U.S. operators operating in the regulatory environment that exists today? What does it mean to “stand on the shoulders of giants” in the pipeline industry? Where did “zero incidents” come from, and what did the original creators mean by it? How are we seeing environmental impacts influence regulations? ILI tools have developed exponentially over the past few years, but understanding their real capabilities is essential for integrity management. On the newest episode of Pipeline Things, Christopher De Leon and Rhett Dotson are joined by Bruce Nestleroth to discuss how to get educated to ensure the tools you are buying from ILI vendors are what you actually need. They also dive into MFL sensors and Bruce’s history in the pipeline industry. Highlights: How did Bruce Nestleroth get started in the pipeline industry? What does Bruce mean by “science is about truth; engineering is about compromise”? Why is there such a wide range of MFL sensors? How should people understand the specifications for ILI tools? Why is it important to ask the right questions when speaking to ILI vendors? Can MFL tools provide a river bottom profile for RSTRENG? Over the years, regulations have generally emerged as a response to failures. Past failures have been the catalysts for the standards and guidelines for integrity management instead of proactive research and standard development. On the newest episode of Pipeline Things, Christopher De Leon and Rhett Dotson are joined by Jerry Rau to discuss the way it is and the way it should be. Join us on today’s episode of Pipeline Things as Rhett, Christopher, and Jerry discuss how research should be driving standards and regulations, rather than incidents. Highlights: How successful has the industry been at mobilizing in the past to protect against failures proactively? What can managers and integrity engineers do to prevent history from repeating itself? How do younger pipeline professionals get involved to continue learning more about the industry and furthering regulations? In the words of Dr. Dave, there are two kinds of operators – those that have recognized the threat of geohazards and those that haven’t. To wrap up The Failure Files season, Rhett and Chris discuss a 2020 event in Hillsboro, Kentucky related to geohazard threat management. More operators are becoming aware of the threat of geohazards and working to implement proper management techniques. This story begins in 2015 in Centreville, Virginia when a restaurant employee dials 911 to report a strong gas smell in the area. Days after that first phone call, a pipeline operator discovers that the leak source is one of its 36-inch diameter pipelines. After excavating around a dent found from a previous inspection, they found contaminated soil and the leak. Why did the operator fail to determine the leak, and how have regulations changed since? Listen to this episode of Pipeline Things to find out. Highlights: Where do dents rank on the threat spectrum? How do we know when one poses a significant threat? What is fatigue cycling? Why is it important to consider when excavating? What strategies do we have today and what lessons can we learn to prevent history from repeating itself? Welcome back to this special season of Pipeline Things: The Failure Files, where Rhett and Chris delve into significant pipeline incidents throughout history and break down the NTSB failure reports that accompany them. Today's episode focuses on two different catastrophes on opposite sides of the country. The first begins on the morning of August 19, 2020 in Carlsbad, New Mexico, where a 30-inch natural gas pipeline ruptured and ignited, creating a 51-foot crater about 113 feet along the pipe that burned for 55 minutes. The second takes place twelve years later in Sissonville, West Virginia when a 20-in natural gas transmission pipeline operated by Columbia Gas Transmission failed. Listen to learn how these events are related, the major causes, notable outcomes, prevention strategies, and how the findings from this report have affected recent gas pipeline regulations.  Highlights: - What should modern-day IMPs account for? Is there a reason to expand beyond prescribed actions in regulation, and if so, how far? - What procedures and regulations do we have today as a result of the findings in this NTSB report? - How did these two incidents affect the definitions of HCAs and MCAs?
