PIT PASS INDY – SEASON 4, EPISODE 63 – Mark Montieth, author of ‘VUCKOVICH The Man Who Wouldn’t Lift’
December 17, 2024
Show host Bruce Martin has a special Pit Pass Indy, featuring an exclusive interview with Mark Montieth, an author and former sportswriter at The Indianapolis Star who helped turn a manuscript that was also 70 years old into a book on one of the greatest legends in Indianapolis 500 history.
The book is entitled, “VUKOVICH The Man Who Wouldn’t Lift” and tells the incredible life story of the great Bill Vukovich, who won back-to-back Indianapolis 500s in 1953 and 1954 and was running away with the lead in the 1955 500-Mile Race before he was killed while leading the race in a crash on the backstretch. He was just 36 years old.
Racing fans have heard the name “Bill Vukovich” but few know the story of the man. Montieth was able to take a manuscript written by Indianapolis News sportswriter Angelo Angelopolous, who died of Leukemia in 1962, into a hardcover book by Halfcourt Press in Indianapolis.
The book is available at Amazon.com or by contacting Mark Montieth at markmontieth55@gmail.com.
Signed copies are also available by contacting Montieth. It would make a great Christmas or holiday gift for any Indianapolis 500 or IndyCar fan.

This week begins with some sad news as three-time Indianapolis 500 winning driver Bobby Unser passed away late Sunday night after a lengthy illness at the age of 87.
Upon reflecting on the life of this Indy 500 legend (who is also a 10-time Pikes Peak Hill Climb champion), a line from Dr. Seuss comes to mind: “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”
Not only was Unser one of IndyCar racing’s most legendary drivers, he was also one of its greatest personalities. He was fast and fearless on the track, and talkative and controversial outside of the car.
He won 37 IndyCar Series races in both the United States Auto Club (USAC) and CART. He also won 52 poles in his career. His Indy 500 wins came in 1968, 1975 and 1981.
Once his racing career was over, Unser became part of ABC’s television crew that telecast the Indianapolis 500 and other IndyCar races on TV. His personality and bombastic style made him a fan favorite.
The episode of Pit Pass Indy is entirely devoted to Unser as host Bruce Martin gives his highly personal reflections on a driver who was a hero as a youngster and became a close friend in life.
Racing legend and 1969 Indianapolis 500 winner Mario Andretti, a friend with Unser for most of his career and one of his fiercest rivals, gives his thoughts on Unser. Also, four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Rick Mears pays tribute to his former teammate at Penske Racing.
Instead of recapping the doubleheader action at Texas Motor Speedway this past weekend, those interviews will be part of next week’s show on Pit Pass Indy.

PIT PASS INDY PRESENTED BY PENSKE TRUCK RENTAL – SEASON 4, EPISODE 47 – Previewing the 2024 IndyCar Series Championship Weekend with race promoter Scott Borchetta of Big Machine Label Group
September 10, 2024
In this championship preview edition of Pit Pass Indy presented by Penske Truck Rental, show host Bruce Martin looks ahead to the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix with Scott Borchetta, the race sponsor and the founder and CEO of Big Machine Label Group.
In the entertainment industry, Borchetta recognized talent when he saw it, and when he heard it. In 2004, he met a young 14-year-old girl who had extraordinary talent. One year later, he started Big Machine and signed the girl to a contract in 2005 as its first client.
It was Taylor Swift, unquestionably the world’s biggest entertainer who went on to win two GRAMMY Album of the Year Awards for Fearless in 2010 and 1989 in 2016. Although Swift would eventually leave Big Machine, the company remains one of the most successful entertainment companies in the industry.
But Scott Borchetta is a racer at heart.
A competitive driver behind the wheel, Borchetta owns a NASCAR Xfinity Series team and is the promoter of the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix – the championship race for IndyCar.
Martin has an exclusive interview with Borchetta for Pit Pass Indy Presented by Penske Truck Rental.
