In episode 23, Jeremy chats with veteran developer David Hernly, the developer of the party bridge simulator Starship Horizons, which gets its own huge allocation of space at MAGFest every year and recently launched on Steam. David is also the developer of Mythric Mystery Master, which is an offshoot of the Horzons engine, that powers... escape rooms? Yep!
In episode 22 Jeremy sits down with one of the East Coast's most iconic indie game developers, founder of Philosoplay, and PixelFest 2016 panelist... drumroll... Tony Powell! Whether he's showcasing Mighty Mashers (formerly That Rock Paper Scissors Game), working with the Maryland STEM Festival, or having awards named after him at MAGFest... Tony always brings an inspiring presence along with him!
In episode 21, Jeremy comes to you from the January PixelFest Devs meetup at Circuit Social in downtown Norfolk and chats with Andrew Scott Hollis about his physical/board game Jeweler's Dozen, a killer LARP in Philadelphia, the great things that can happen at events like PixelFest. They also make plans to catch up at RegentCon later in the year.
In episode 20, Jeremy chats with indie comic book creator Vince White. Vince was instrumental in helping Jeremy deliver the Swap Fire comic, which was a backer reward of the successful 2017 Kickstarter for Swap Fire 2 on Nintendo Switch. Jeremy and Vince go on for nearly 2 hours (the longest PixelCast yet) and invent the PixelVerse along the way. Good times!
In episode 19, Jeremy unveils plans to host a Global Game Jam site in downtown Norfolk, announces the first two anchor partners for PixelFest 2020, and then dives into some game developer philosophy with Life is a Vector!
In episode 18, Jeremy makes a New Year's Resolution to interview more people on the PixelCast. First up is the amazing Kishi Bashi, a musician and filmmaker who collaborated with Jeremy on a mobile game back in 2014.
In episode 17, Jeremy takes a trip down memory lane with the first ten gifts of Christmas past that seem to have guided him toward game development and helped him to keep "Growing through Love of Games!"
In episode 16, Jeremy joins the PixelFest Devs for great food, drinks, and conversation at Keagan's in Virginia Beach. Jeremy interviews long-time developers, AJ Comfort and John Woodcock. Jeremy also follows up with Joshua Jané and Derek Hampton of Just Bare Games (Bouncy Bear) in addition to Joseph Musso of Santa's Sacrilegious Arcade Action. Great times!
In episode 15, Jeremy talks Tetris 99, covers the news, and unfortunately... could not have Vince White on the show as scheduled. He also botches the PixelFest Devs meetup date. For the record, it will be Tuesday, December 17th at Keagan's in Virginia Beach.
In episode 14, Jeremy dives into the Swap Fire Comic, specifically with regard to the PixelFest ad that will appear in it. He also talks about solving a Rubik's Cube, beating Street Fighter II without losing, and the essence of personal challenge. Finally, Jeremy dives into games that are always in development and asks the question; was it better when games had specific iterations that can always be revisited? World of Warcraft vanilla seems to say just that!
In episode 13, Jeremy waxes nostalgic about Thanksgiving Day gaming memories and covers the latest news.
In episode 12, Jeremy chats with Nathan Jester and Derek Hampton at Brown Chicken Brown Cow in downtown Hampton. Nathan and Derek are local indie developers and long-time PixelFest participants. Nathan recently built a shoe-box arcade controller amongst a variety of gaming projects. Meanwhile, Derek talks Bouncy Bear and personal skill development.
In episode 11, Jeremy discusses how he came to realize (while playing Double Dragon IV for some reason) that games as a medium, demonstrate the peaceful coexistence of grand design, determinism, and free will in one possibility space. Jeremy also uses Super Mario Maker as another example of the triple confluence.
In episode 10, Jeremy talks about Steve Wozniak's influence on the indie game industry and why, of the two Steves, it is Wozniak that more people need to emulate in our local area to bring about the great change and prosperity the startup community seeks.
In episode 9, Jeremy discusses Untitiled Goose Game and a principle, that making games is like playing Apples-to-Apples with your "silly" friends. Jeremy also dives into Mode 7 again and discusses the significance of this line of code:
z = scale - ( Mathf.Cos( Mathf.Abs( distortMap.height / 2 - y ) * Mathf.Deg2Rad ) * 3 );
Finally, Jeremy starts diving into PixelFest 2020 plans with a call for sponsors, indies, artists, and vendors; when the previously aforementioned Mode 7 program sprung a memory leak to the tune of 61 GB and ends the video ;) Fun times!
In PixelCast 8, Jeremy is too busy to do a full episode but he quickly covers his Mode 7 research for Castlevania IV, which led him to download the SNES Developer Manual, chat with Dylan Cuthbert (who programmed the first Star Fox for SNES as a teenager), and find Retro Game Mechanics Explained's Alex "Dotsarecool" Losego, who is possibly the most obsessed person on the planet with regard to the SNES's inner workings!
In PixelCast 7, Jeremy hangs out at Pixels = Pints + Bytes for the latest PixelFest Devs meetup and chats with two local indies about their studios. Joshua Jané demos 'Bouncy Bear' and explains what makes 'Just Bare Games' tick, including the fact that all their games contain bears! Meanwhile, Joseph Musso of Sunset Studios let's us in on the game he's been pondering for 10 years ('Santa's Sleigh Ride Sacrilegious Arcade Action'... say it three times fast), which is now playable after coming out to a PixelFest Devs meetup back in August.
Jeremy continues October with some more Halloween spirit by attempting to go bodyless and pass off green screen artifacts as monster makeup! Reggie Fils-Aime enters the Video Game Hall of Fame and is honored with a lifetime achievement award. The industry mourns the loss of John Kirby, who at one point saved Donkey Kong and possibly Nintendo as we know it today. Jeremy also covers the latest PixelFest 2020 developments and gets techy with Castlevania IV ... though he's still not done yet. And... drumroll... Jeremy completely forgets to mention that there will be a PixelFest Devs meetup on Tuesday, October 15th at Pixels = Pints + Bytes in Norfolk, VA. Be there ... or you're going to need an extra life MUAHAHAHA!
In the 5th PixelCast, Jeremy shares some fond memories of Castlevania IV now that it's October and Halloween gaming is on. Jeremy also dives into the news and covers an issue that's been on his heart and mind lately; the increasing number of game developers who seem to be passing away in their 40's and 50's.
